A series of binuclear neutral nickel and palladium complexes [(XC6H2CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))MRL](2) 4b-f (X=NO2, M=Ni, R=Ph, L=PPh3, 4b; X=H, M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3,4c; X=H,M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 4d; X=NO2,M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3, 4e; X=NO2, M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 4f) and [(C10H7CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))MRL](2) 8a-c (M=Ni, R=Ph, L=PPh3, 8a; M=Pd, R=Me, L=PPh3, 8b; M=Pd, R=Me, L=Py, 8c) have been synthesized and characterized. The structures of complexes 4e and 8b have also been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. With modified methylalummoxane (MMAO) as cocatalysts, these complexes and complex [(C6H3CH=NC6H3-iPr(2))NiPh(PPh3)](2) 4a are capable of catalyzing the addition polymerization of norbomene (NBE) with the high activity up to 2.3 x 10(8) g PNBE/(mol(M) h). The structure of complexes affects considerably catalytic activity towards norbomene polymerization. The polymers obtained with nickel complexes are soluble, while those obtained with palladium complexes are insoluble. Palladium complexes 4c, 4e and 8b bearing PPh3 ligands exhibit much higher activities than the corresponding complexes 4d, M and 8c bearing pyridine ligands under the same conditions.

Nickel appears the most promising for the replacement of palladium among the inexpensive transition metals for that it is active for Heck reaction and about 500 times cheaper than palladium. In this article, we describe our recent results in the area of nickel-catalyzed Heck vinylations. Main focus is on the influence of ligand concentration in different organic solvents and the effects of the addition of water. The conversion is high in NMP and increases with increasing of PPh3/Ni ratio; in ethanol and toluene the conversion presents a maximum value on Ni(PPh3)(2). The effect of the addition of water is sensitive to the concentration of PPh3 and the nature of solvent, it was well explained with the formation and transfer of the active species in the different solvent systems.

Non-covalent inclusion complexes formed between an anti-inflammatory drug, oleanolic acid (OA), and alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins (CDs) were investigated by means of solubility studies and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn). The order of calculated association constants (K-1:1) of complexes between OA and different CDs in solution is in good agreement with the order of their relative peak intensities and the relative CID energies of the complexes under the same ESI-MSn conditions. These results indicate a direct correlation between the behaviors of solution- and gas-phase complexes. ESI-MS can thus be used to evaluate solution-phase non-covalent complexes successfully. The experimental results show that the most stable 1:1 inclusion complexes between three CDs and OA can be formed, but 2:1 CD-OA complexes can be formed with beta- and gamma-CDs. Multi-component complexes of alpha-CD-OA-beta-CD (1:1:1), alpha-CD-OA-gamma-CD (1:1:1) and beta-CD-OA-gamma-CD (1:1:1) were found in equimolar CD mixtures with excess OA. The formation of 2:1 and multi-component 1:1:1 non-covalent CD-OA complexes indicates that beta- and gamma-CD are able to form sandwich-type inclusion non-covalent complexes with OA. The above results can be partly supported by the relative sizes of OA and CD cavities by molecular modeling calculations.

In situ synthesis of terbium carboxyl complexes in an organic-inorganic hybrid matrix by a sol-gel process has been proposed. The formation of terbium carboxyl complexes in the hybrid matrix is confirmed by the luminescence spectra and IR spectra. It is observed that the location at the amino group in aminobenzoic acid has a large effect on the luminescence properties and lifetimes. Furthermore, the emission intensity decreases with increasing temperature.

Reactions of the Rh hydrido complex [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(EtOH)(2)]ClO4 (1) With nitrogen ligands such as 2-(4-thiazolyl)benzimidazole (tbz). pyridazine (pdz), imidazole (im) and pyrimidine (pmd) in CH,Cl, afforded Various mononuclear Rh hydrido complexes, [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(tbz)]CIO4 (2), [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(pdZ)(2)]ClO(4)(.)2CH(2)Cl(2) (3). [Rh(H)Cl(PPh3)(2)(pdz)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (4). [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(im)(2)]ClO(4)(.)2CH(2)Cl(2) (5). [Rh(H)Cl(PPh3)(2)(im)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (6). [Rh(H)(2)(PPh3)(2)(pmd)(2)](ClO4CH2Cl2)-C-. (7) and the Rh non-hydrido complex [RhCl2(pmd)(4)]ClO4 (8). The Rh complexes 2. 3, 5 and 6 were crystallographically characterized. The formation process was monitored by H-1 NMR and UV-Vis spectra. In all the Rh hydrido complexes, the Rh atom is coordinated by two PPh3. ligands in trans-positions and two nitrogen ligands in the cis-positions. The remaining sites Lire occupied by one or two hydride atoms to form a saturated 18-electron framework in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. For complex 2 an appreciable inter-molecular pi interaction is observed between planes of tbz and PPh3 ligands, while an intra-molecular hydrogen bonding interaction between C-H and Cl atoms is found in complex 6.

Sol-gel derived luminescent thin films doped with rare earth (RE) complexes were prepared using an in-situ synthesis method with a two-step hydrolysis process and the luminescence spectra were measured. Fluorescence Lifetime and thermal stability were investigated. The results show that a broad excitation band indicates the formation of RE complexes in the solid thin films. RE ions, which are restrained in a silica matrix, present longer lifetime and higher thermal stability than that in DMF/PVB films containing the corresponding pure complexes. In-situ synthesis of europium and terbium complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) in silica matrix by a two-step sol-gel process has been proposed. The formation of europium and terbium complexes with phen in sol-gel derived silica gel were confirmed by the luminescence excitation spectra. The silica gels that contain in-situ synthesized europium and terbium complex exhibit the characteristic emission bands of the rare earth ions. Furthermore. the rare earth ions present longer fluorescence lifetimes than the comparable pure complex powder and the complexes dissolved in ethanol solutions. The luminescence properties of the silica gels codoped with europium (or terbium) and phen were also investigated with respect to the gels doped with europium (or terbium). It is reported that two kinds of specific mass spectrometric fragmentations are generated from dissociations of the intermediates of both the ion-neutral complex and the proton-bound complex. Collision-induced dissociation, isotopic labelling, and semi-empirical AM1 calculations were used to investigate the formation mechanism of the ion of m/z 139 from ionized tetrahydroimidazole-substituted methylene beta-diketones and the unimolecular fragmentations pathway of 3-phenyl-1-butyn-3-ol upon electron impact.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry is difficult for the characterization of noncovalent complexes hitherto because of the limitations in acidic matrix, sample preparation, laser-induced polymerization and adduct formation with matrix. Under our experimental conditions, sinapinic acid is used as a matrix, the specific noncovalent interactions of protein with fullerenols were observed by MALDI mass spectrometry. Some mass spectrometric features, such as mass shifts, broad adduct peaks and stoichiometries, showed that the specific non-covalent complexes between protein and fullerenols have been formed at a ratio of 1 : 4 for hemoglobin-fullerenols or 1 : 1 for myoglobin-fullerenols. The results implied that fullereneols could be used to protect partly hemoglobin from decomposition in acidic media, and therefore, it is possible to realize the molecular weight determination of a quaternary protein by MALDI mass spectrometry via the addition of specific organic compound in the matrix.

Four new polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of nicotinic acid N-oxide and isonicotinic acid N-oxide have been synthesized and structurally determined. In the isomorphous compounds [(Ln(L-1)(3) (H2O)(2))(n)]. 4nH(2)O(HL1 = nicotinic acid N-oxide; Ln = Eu, 1; Ln = Er, 2) the lanthanide(III) ions form infinite double chains along the b direction through the coordination of bridging carboxylate and N-oxide groups. The chains are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and uncoordinated N-oxide groups and between aqua ligands and lattice water molecules, to form a three-dimensional network. [(Eu(L-2)(2)-(H2O)(4))(n)](NO3)(n). nH(2)O (HL2 = isonicotinic acid N-oxide, 3) has a polymeric structure in which the europium (III) ions are connected into infinite chains by pairs of syn-syn carboxylate groups. Adjacent chains are interlinked by hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups to form a layer parallel to the (100) plane, and such layers are connected by hydrogen bonds between nitrate anions and aqua ligands, and between oxide groups and lattice water molecules, into a three-dimensional network. In [(Er-2(L-2)(4)(H2O)(10))](NO3)(2). H2O, 4, dinuclear units are inter-linked into a three-dimensional network through hydrogen bonding between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups of both bidentate bridging and unidentate L-2 ligands. Factors affecting the formation of coordination chains and dinuclear units are discussed. Luminescence properties of 1 and 3 have also been studied. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. The compositions and structures of interpolymer complexes formed by mixing phenoxy resin (PHEB) and poly (4-vinylpyridine) (P4VPy) in chloroform have been studied by means of elemental analysis, DSC, FTIR, UV and XPS, In the meantime, the corresponding blends prepared have been characterized and compared. The results show that compositions of the complexes were identical with the ratio of equimolar interactive units. All blends were miscible and their compositions were related to the feed ratios. Based on the experimental results, process of formation of the complex is depicted.

A new kind of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed in aqueous solution through the pre-formed inclusion complexes (abbreviated CD . C-n) between alpha-, beta-cyclodextrins (CDs) and alkanethiols (CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH, n = 10, 14 and 18) was prepared successfully on gold electrodes. High-resolution H-1 NMR was used to confirm the formation of CD . C-n. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to characterize the resulting SAMs (denoted as M-CD . Cn). It was found that M-CD . Cn were more stable against repeated potential cycling in 0.5 M H2SO4 than SAMs of CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH (denoted as M-Cn), with a relative sequence of Mbeta-CD . Cn > Malpha-CD . Cn > M-Cn. In addition, an order of blocking the electron transfer between gold electrodes and redox couples (both Fe(CN)(6)(3-) and Ru(NH3)(6)(3+)) in solution, M-CD . C10 > M-CD . C14 > M-CD . C18, was observed. A plausible explanation is provided to elucidate some of the observations. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

The reaction of diglycolic acid, O(CH2CO2H)(2), with Cu(NO3)(2) . H2O and lanthanoid nitrate hydrate produces a series of novel Ln-Cu mixed metal complexes, [Ln(2)CU(3){O(CH2CO2)(2)}(6)]. nH(2)O (Ln = La, Nd, n = 9; Ln = Er, n = 6), which have been characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. spectroscopy, magnetic measurements and X-ray crystallography. The Ln(3+) and Cu2+ ions are connected by the carboxylate groups of the ligands, resulting in the formation of a complicated network.

Reaction of [Ph(4)P]2WS4 With NiCl2 in methanol solution in the presence of NaOCH3 leads to the formation of [Ph(4)P](2) [S2W(mu-S)(2)Ni(S-2)] (I) A Similar reaction between (NH4)(2)WS4 and NiCl2 under O-2 atmosphere in the presence of Ph(4)PCl or (n)Bu(4)NCl affords [Ph(4)P](2)([(S-2)W(O)(mu-S)(2)]Ni-2] (IIa) and [(n)Bu(4)N](2)([(S-2)W(O)(mu-S)(2)]Ni-2} (IIb) Under argon the same reaction gives [Ph(4)P](2)[Ni(WS4)(2)] (IIIa) and [(n)Bu(4)N](2)[Ni(WS4)(2)] (IIIb). [Ph(4)P](2)[Ni(WOS3)(2)] (IV) and [Ph(4)P](2)[Ni(WO2S2)(2)] (V) can be prepared from the reaction of [Ph(4)P]2WOS3 and [Ph(4)P]2WO2S2 with NiCl2. Treatment of (NH4)(2)WS4 with CuCl in the presence of PPh(3) in boiling pyridine produces W(mu-S)(4)Cu-2(PPh(3))(3) (VI), which can further react with excess PPh(3) to give W(mu-S)(4)Cu-2(PPh(3))(4) . py (VII). Complex I crystallizes in the space group P2(1)/n with the cell parameters: a = 20.049(4), b = 17.010(4), c = 14.311(7) Angstrom; beta = 110.24(3)degrees and Z = 4; R = 0.058 for 4267 independent reflections. The structural study confirms that complex I contains two terminal sulfide ligands, two bridging sulfide ligands, a side-on disulfide ligand, and a planar central W(mu-S)(2)Ni four membered ring. Complex VII crystallizes in the space group C2/c with the cell parameters: a = 26.436(8), b = 20.542(6), c = 19.095(8) Angstrom; beta = 125.00(3)degrees and Z = 4; R = 0.080 for 3802 independent reflections. The structural study reveals a perfect linear arrangement of the three metal atoms Cu-W-Cu.
