Polymer solar cells have the potential to become a major electrical power generating tool in the 21st century. R&D endeavors are focusing on continuous roll-to-roll printing of polymeric or organic compounds from solution-like newspapers-to produce flexible and lightweight devices at low cost. It is recognized, though, that besides the functional properties of the compounds the organization of structures on the nanometer level-forced and controlled mainly by the processing conditions applied-determines the performance of state-of-the-art polymer solar cells. In such devices the photoactive layer is composed of at least two functional materials that form nanoscale interpenetrating phases with specific functionalities, a so-called bulk heterojunction. In this perspective article, our current knowledge on the main factors determining the morphology formation and evolution is introduced, and gaps of our understanding on nanoscale structure-property relations in the field of high-performance polymer solar cells are addressed. Finally, promising routes toward formation of tailored morphologies are presented.

The supramolecular self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of C-60 by thiolated beta-cyclodextrin (CD) on gold surfaces were constructed for the first time using C-60 monoanion. The results indicate that monoanionic C-60 plays a crucial role in the formation of the C-60-containing self-assembled monolayers. The generation of C-60 monoanion and the formation process of C-60 SAMs were monitored in-situ by UV-visible and near-IR spectroscopy. The resulting C-60 SAMs were fully characterized by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and water contact angle measurements. After the immobilization of C-60 by the SAMs of thiolated beta-CD, the film thickness increased by approximately 1 nm from 0.8 to 1.8 nm as determined by SE, demonstrating the formation of the supramolecular self-assembled monolayers of thiolated beta-CD/C-60. The new C-60 SAMs exhibited one quasi-reversible redox couple at half wave potential of -0.57 V vs SCE in aqueous solution containing 0.1 M KCl. The surface coverage of C-60 on the gold surfaces was estimated to be 1.1 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2). The XPS showed the assembly of C-60 over the thiolated beta-CD SAMs.

A novel method to study electron-transfer (ET) reactions between ferrocene in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) and a redox couple of K3Fe(CN)(6) and K4Fe(CN)(6) in water using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) with a three-electrode setup is reported. In this work, a water droplet that adheres to the Surface of a platinum disk electrode is immersed in a DCE solution. The aqueous redox couple serves both as a reference electrode on the platinum disk and as an electron donor/acceptor at the polarized liquid/liquid inter-face. With the present experimental approach, the liquid/liquid interface can be polarized externally, while the electron-transfer reactions between the two phases can be monitored independently by SECM. The apparent heterogeneous rate constants for the ET reactions were obtained by fitting the experimental approach curves to the theoretical values. These rate constants obey the Butler-Volmer theory i.e., them, are found to be potential dependent.

Electrochemical polymerized polyaniline(PAn) film electrode was used to investigate the electrocatalytic effect of PAn on the electrochemical redox reaction of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT), PAn film electrode was electrochemically treated or immersed in DMcT solution before it was scanned in 1.0 mol/L HCl electrolyte. The cyclic voltammograms of PAn film electrode in 1.0 mol/L HCl solution changed with the above treatment, implying the electrocatalytic effect of PAn on the redox reaction of DMcT, The formation of electron-donor-acceptor adducts through the interaction between thiol or disulfide groups of DMcT and amine or imine groups of PAn during the treatment was probably the reason of the catalysis, The electrochemical properties of the adduct were different from those of PAn and DMcT, The adduct possessed a higher electrochemical activity and a better electrochemical reversibility than DMcT or PAn used alone.

A new series of side chain liquid crystal polymers based on the backbone of polymethacrylate containing 4-nitroazobenzene and 4-methoxybiphenyl group as side chain mesogen were prepared and characterized, FTIR, H-1 NMR, POM and WAXD were used to study the structure, phase behavior and mesophase texture of this series of SCLC copolymers. The researches show that polymer PM5MPP and copolymer M5MPP/MMEANB are enantiotropic liquid crystalline polymers, but polymer PMMEANB has no liquid crystalline properties. DSC results showed that the thermal stability of the mesophase of this series of copolymers was enhanced by the existence of intermolecular electron donor-acceptor interaction. It was found that the temperature range of the mesophase of the copolymers was broadened with increasing 4-nitroazobenzene units. The focal-conic texture observed by POM indicated that this series of the copolymers possessed the characteristics of smectic liquid crystal.

The UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectra of a soluble polyimide, YS-30, in several organic solvents were measured over a wide range of concentration. The experimental results show that there exist both intramolecular and intermolecular electron donor acceptor interactions for YS-30 molecules. The fluorescence behavior of YS-30 in N,N-dimethylacetamide and in chloroform solutions is similar in general, except that its ground-state intermolecular charge transfer emission is more obvious in N,N-dimethylacetamide solution. This difference is attributed to the greater extent of disruption of the chain packing by solvent or/and the more efficient radiationless energy dissipation process from the excited state complexes to chloroform. The intensity ratio of intermolecular charge transfer emission to intramolecular charge transfer emission is used to characterize the state of aggregation of YS-30 molecules in solutions. The plot of this ratio versus concentration indicates the existence of two critical concentrations. It is also found from the same plot that the decrease of coil size is very pronounced during the initial stage of shrinkage.

A new class of liquid crystalline poly(ester-imide)s was synthesized by melt polycondensation. The basic physical properties of the resulting polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (t.g.a.), and rheological and mechanical testing. All of these poly(ester-imide)s were amorphous, as reflected by the results obtained from the WAXD and d.s.c. studies. Characterization and comparison of these poly(ester-imide)s with the corresponding polyesters suggested that the introduction of imide groups into the polyester chain is favourable for the formation of liquid crystalline phases. These results, together with the rheological studies, suggested that there existed a form of strong inter- or intramolecular electron donor-acceptor interaction which played a significant role in the liquid crystalline properties of the poly(ester-imide)s. The polymer products thus obtained exhibited good mechanical properties, with flexural strengths and moduli as high as 174 MPa and 6.9 GPa, respectively. The morphology of the fracture surfaces of extruded rod samples showed a sheet-like structure which consisted of ribbons and fibres oriented along the flow direction. The glass transition temperatures and thermal stabilities of the polymers were improved by the incorporation of imide groups. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Organic light emitting diodes with an interface of organic acceptor 3-, 4-, 9-, 10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and donor copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) involved in hole injection are fabricated. As compared to the conventional device using a 5 nm CuPc hole injection layer, the device using an interface of 10 nm PTCDA and 5 rim CuPc layers shows much lower operating voltage with an increase of about 46% in the maximum power efficiency. The enhanced device performance is attributed to the efficient hole generation at the PTCDA/CuPc interface. This study provides a new way of designing hole injection.

The hole effective-mass Hamiltonian for the semiconductors of wurtzite structure is established, and the effective-mass parameters of GaN and AlxGa1-xN are given. Besides the asymmetry in the z and x, y directions, the linear term of the momentum operator in the Hamiltonian is essential in determining the valence band structure, which is different from that of the zinc-blende structure. The binding energies of acceptor states are calculated by solving strictly the effective-mass equations. The binding energies of donor and acceptor for wurtzite GaN are 20 and 131, 97 meV, respectively, which are inconsistent with the recent experimental results. It is proposed that there are two kinds of acceptors in wurtzite GaN. One kind is the general acceptor such as C, substituting N, which satisfies the effective-mass theory, and the other includes Mg, Zn, Cd etc., the binding energy of which deviates from that given by the effective-mass theory. Experimentally, wurtzite GaN was grown by the MBE method, and the PL spectra were measured. Three main peaks are assigned to the DA transitions from the two kinds of acceptor. Some of the transitions were identified as coming from the cubic phase of GaN, which appears randomly within the predominantly hexagonal material. The binding energy of acceptor in ALN is about 239, 158 meV, that in AlxGa1-xN alloys (x approximate to 0.2) is 147, 111 meV, close to that in GaN. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science S.A. Fe-doped semi-insulating (SI) InP has become semi-conducting (SC) material completely after annealing at 900 V for 10 hours. Defects in the SC and SI InP materials have been studied by deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and thermally stimulated current spectroscopy (TSC) respectively. The DLTS only detected Fe acceptor related deep level defect with significant concentration, suggesting the formation of a high concentration of shallow donor in the SC-InP TSC results confirmed the nonexistence of deep level defects in the annealed SI-InP. The results demonstrate a significant influence of the thermally induced defects on the electrical properties of SI-InP. The formation mechanism and the nature of the shallow donor defect have been discussed based on the results.

The free electron concentration of as-grown liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) InP measured by Hall effect is much higher than the concentration of net donor impurity determined by glow discharge mass spectroscopy. Evidence of the existence of a native donor hydrogen-indium vacancy complex in LEC undoped and Fe-doped InP materials can be observed with infrared absorption spectra. The concentration increase of the donor complex correlates with the increase of ionized deep acceptor iron impurity Fe~(2+) concentration in Fe-doped semi-insulating (SI) InP. These results indicate that the hydrogen-indium vacancy complex is an important donor defect in as-grown LEC InP, and that it has significant influence on the compensation in Fe-doped SI InP.

We fabricated organic photovoltaic cells by using hexadecafluorophthalocyaninatocopper (F16CuPc) as electron acceptor material and para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) as electron donor material. F16CuPc has wide absorption spectrum from 550 nm to 850 nm, which covers the maximum of solar photo flux. The measurement of their external quantum efficiency (EQE) demonstrated that the photocurrent comes from the excitons created in F16CuPc, which were separated into free electrons and holes at heterojunction interface of p-6P and F16CuPc. Moreover, F(16)FuPc with excellent air-stability improved the environmental stability of photovoltaic cells, and the unencapsulated cells exhibited the shelf lifetime of exceeding a week.

A systematic approach is proposed to obtain the interfacial interatomic potentials. By inverting ab initio adhesive energy curves for the metal-MgO ceramic interfaces, We derive interfacial potentials between Ag and O2-, Ag and Mg2+, Al and O2-, Al and Mg2+. The interfacial potentials, obtained from this method, demonstrate general features of bondings between metal atoms and ceramic ions.

Three-photon absorption (3PA) of two fluorene-based molecules with D-pi-D structural motifs (abbreviated as BPAF and BCZF) has been determined by using a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser pumped with 38 ps pulses at 1064 nm in DMF. The measured 3PA cross-sections are 222 and 140 x 10(-78) cm(6) s(2) for BPAF and BCZF, respectively. AM1 calculations show that attaching different donors changes the charge density distribution of the fluorene skeleton, and it is observed that the 3PA cross-section can be enhanced with increasing intramolecular charge transfer character, measured by the parameter Delta p(1)/Delta p(2)/Delta p(1)'.
