The rheological behavior and the dynamic mechanical properties of syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene (sPB) were investigated by a rotational rheometer (MCR-300) and a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA-242C). Rheological behavior of sPB-830, a sPB with crystalline degree of 20.1% and syndiotactic content of 65.1%, showed that storage modulus (G ') and loss modulus (G '') decreased, and the zero shear viscosity (eta(0)) decreased slightly with increasing temperature when measuring temperatures were lower than 160 degrees C. However, G ' and G '' increased at the end region of relaxation curves with increasing temperature and)10 increased with increasing temperature as the measuring temperatures were higher than 160 degrees C. Furthermore, critical crosslinked reaction temperature was detected at about 160 degrees C for sPB-830. The crosslinked reaction was not detected when test temperature was lower than 150 degrees C for measuring the dynamic mechanical properties of sample. The relationship between processing temperature and crosslinked reaction was proposed for the sPB-830 sample.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and heat-treated Mg–12.3Zn–5.8Y–1.4Al (ZYA1261) alloy were investigated. The phase compositions of the as-cast alloy are -Mg, Mg3YZn6 (I-phase), Mg3Y2Zn3 (W-phase), Mg12YZn (Z-phase), Mg24Y5, MgZn and a small quantity of Al-containing phase. The phase compositions change with various heat treatment conditions. The highest Vickers hardness is obtained in the alloy aged at 200 ◦C for 5 h, the transmission electron microscopy indicated that fine scale Z-phase precipitates in the matrix. The tensile properties of the as-cast and heat-treated alloys were reported.

Mg-20Zn-8Al-xCe(x=0-2 wt.%) alloys were prepared by metal mould casting method, the effects of Ce on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys were investigated. The results showed that the dendrite as well as gram size were refined by the addition of Ce, and the best refinement was obtained in 1.39% Ce containing alloy. The main phases in the as cast alloys were alpha-Mg and tau-Mg-32 (Al, Zn)(49), and Al4Ce phase was found in the alloys contained more than 1.39% Ce. The addition of Ce improved the mechanical properties of the alloys. The strengthening mechanism was attributed to grain refinement and compound reinforced.

The lightest density of Mg has stimulated renewed interest in Mg based alloys for applications in the automotive, aerospace and communications industries. However, Mg in the pure form has relatively low strength, limited ductility and is susceptible to corrosion. Great efforts have been made to improve the mechanical properties of Mg alloys. Alloying Mg with other elements is one of the most important methods. An important class of Mg alloys is the Mg-Zn-RE system (RE = rare earth elements). In recent few decades, a series of new Mg-Zn-RE system alloys have been obtained, and detailed the structure and mechanical properties of the alloys. In this paper, the structure and mechanical properties of the Mg-Zn-RE alloys have been summarized. It showed that these alloys have high strength and they are prospected to be widely used in the future.

La2Zr2O7 (LZ) is a promising thermal barrier coating material for the high-temperature applications, which could be significantly toughened by the YAG nanopowder incorporated into the matrix. The composites of xYAG/(1-x)LZ (Y=10, 15, 20 vol. %, LZ-x-YAG) were densified by means of high-pressure sintering (HPS) under a pressure of 4.5 GPa at 1650 degrees C for 5 min, by which a high-relative density above 93% could be obtained. The morphologies of the fractured surfaces were investigated by the scanning electron microscope, and the fracture toughness and Vicker's-hardness of the composites were evaluated by the microindentation. The grain size of the LZ matrix drops significantly with the addition of YAG nanoparticles and the fracture type changes from the intergranular to a mixture type of the transgranular and intergranular in the nanocomposites. The LZ-20-YAG nanocomposite has a fracture toughness of 1.93 MPa m(1/2), which is obviously higher than that of the pure LZ (1.57 MPa m(1/2)), and the toughening mechanism is discussed in this paper.

In this study, compositional dependence of age hardening response and tensile properties were investigated for Mg-10G(d-x)Y-0.4Zr (x = 1, 3, 5 wt.%) alloys. With increasing Y content, the age hardening response of the alloys enhanced and tensile properties increased. The Mg-10Gd-5Y-0.4Zr alloy exhibited maximum tensile strength and yield strength at aged-peak hardness, and the values were 302 MPa and 289 MPa at room temperature, and 340 MPa and 267 MPa at 250 degrees C, respectively. The strong peak age hardening was attributed to the precipitation of prismatic beta' plates in a triangular arrangement. The cubic shaped beta phase was also observed at grain boundaries. The remarkable improvement in strength is associated with a uniform and high dense distribution of beta' and cubic shaped beta precipitate phases in Mg matrix. Elongation of Mg-10Gd-0.4Zr alloys decreased with increasing Y content, and the elongation of Mg-10Gd-5Y-0.4Zr alloy was less than 3% below 250 degrees C, whereas the alloys containing I wt.% and 3 wt.% Y exhibited higher elongation than 5% at room temperature.

A novel cemented carbides alloy (W0.4Al0.6)C-0.65-Co were prepared by mechanical alloying and hot-pressing sintering in this work. Hot-pressing (HP) as a common technique was performed to fabricate the bulk bodies of the hard alloys. The hardness, bending strength, density of the novel hard alloy are also tested, and it has superior mechanical properties. The hardness of (W0.4Al0.6)C-0.65-Co hard alloy was very high, and the density, operate cost of the novel material were much lower than WC-Co, more important is the aluminum dissolving is not decrease the strength compared with the WC-Co system. There is almost no eta-phase in the (W0.4Al0.6)C-0.65-Co cemented carbides system even the carbon deficient reaches the astonishing value of 35%. This novel property will give us more choice to design and gain new materials that we needed.

An aromatic polyimide was synthesized via a one-step polycondensation reaction between biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) in p-chlorophenol. The polyimide (BPDA-ODA) solution dopes were spun into fibers by means of dry-jet wet spinning. The as-spun fibers were drawn and treated in heating tubes for improving the mechanical properties. The thermal treatment on the fibers resulted in a relatively high tensile strength and modulus. Thermal mechanical analysis (TMA) was employed to study the linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) spectra showed that the BPDA-ODA fibers possessed an excellent property of thermo-oxidative degradation resistance. The sonic modulus E-s of the polyimide fibers was measured.

A numerical method to estimate temperature distribution during the cure of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK)-based composite is suggested. The effect of the temperature distribution on the selection of cure cycle is evaluated using a suggested alternation criterion. The effect of varying heating rate and thickness on the temperature distribution, viscosity distribution and distribution of the extent of cure reaction are discussed based on the combination of the here-established temperature distribution model and the previously established curing kinetics model and chemorheological model. It is found that, for a thin composite (<=10mm) and low heating rate (<=2.5K/min), the effect of temperature distribution on cure cycle and on the processing window for pressure application can be neglected. Low heating rate is of benefit to reduce the temperature gradient. The processing window for pressure application becomes narrower with increasing thicknesses of composite sheets. The validity of the temperature distribution model and the modified processing window is evaluated through the characterization of mechanical and physical properties of E-PEK-based composite fabricated according to different temperature distribution conditions.

Epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK) developed in this Institute is a candidate matrix resin for polymer composites as structural materials. Cure cycles for this reaction system were simulated according to the previously established processing model. It is found that for the E-PEK system, the curing process is best completed by a stepwise cure cycle comprising two isothermal processes at different temperatures, T-1 and T-2. The cure cycles over a wide range of processing parameters simulated, based on the established processing model, indicate that the processing window is width-adjustable. Analysis of the mechanical properties of the composite sheets showed that the simulated cure cycles are acceptable and reliable. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Blends of a liquid crystalline thermotropic copolyester (LCP70) and an amorphous phenolphthalein based poly(ether-ketone)(PEK-C) with two viscosities were prepared by melt blending. The blends' morphology, rheological and mechanical properties were investigated by DSC, SEM, mechanical and rheological tests. It was observed that the optimum composition of the PEK-C/LCP70 blend was 10 wt% LCP for both mechanical and rheological properties. When the LCP content was less than 10%, the LCP phase existed as finely dispersed fibrous domains with a diameter of about 1 mu m in the matrix, and both tensile and flexural properties were improved. In contrast, when the LCP content reached 20% or more, the LCP domains coalesced to ellipsoidal particles with a diameter of about 5 mu m, and the mechanical properties decreased as a result. It is demonstrated that pure PEK-C with a high viscosity which was difficult to process by melt extrusion, could be extruded conveniently when 10% LCP70 was incorporated. It is emphasized that LCP not only can be used as a reinforcing phase but also an effective processing agent for engineering thermoplastics, especially for those with high viscosity and narrow processing window. This work deals with the effect of compatibilizer on the morphological, thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of polypropylene/polycarbonate (PP/ PC) blends. The blends, containing between 0 to 30 vol % of polycarbonate and a compatibilizer, were prepared by means of a twin-screw extruder. The compatibilizer was produced by grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene in the molten state. Blend morphologies were controlled by adding PP-g-GMA as compatibilizer during melt processing, thus changing dispersion and interfacial adhesion of the polycarbonate phase. With PP-g-GMA, volume fractions increased from 2.5 to 20, and much finer dispersions of discrete polycarbonate phase with average domain sizes decreased from 35 to 3 mu m were obtained. The WAXD spectra showed that the crystal structure of neat PP was different from that in blends. The DSC results suggested that the degree of crystallization of PP in blends decreased as PC content and compatibilizer increased. The mechanical properties significantly changed after addition of PP-g-GMA. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The effect of processing conditions on the electrical and dynamic behavior of carbon black (CB) filled ethylene/ethylacrylate copolymer (EEA) composites was investigated. The compounds were prepared by two methods, solution blending and mechanical mixing. Compared with the solution counterpart, the mechanical composites have a strong positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect and a high dynamic elastic modulus, which results from the good dispersion state of carbon black in EEA, i.e. the strong interaction between carbon black and EEA. It can be concluded that the strong interaction between polymer and carbon black is essential for composites to have a high PTC intensity, good electrical reproducibility and high dynamic elastic modulus.
