We present the multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of photons produced in Au + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 and 200 GeV. The photons are measured in the region -3.7 < eta < -2.3 using the photon Multiplicity detector in the STAR experiment at RHIC. The number of photons produced per average number of participating nucleon pairs increases with the beam energy and is independent of (lie collision centrality. For collisions with similar average numbers of participating nucleons the photon multiplicities are observed to be similar for An + Au and Cu + Cu collisions at a given beam energy. The ratios of the number of charged particles to photons in the measured pseudorapidity range are found to be 1.4 +/- 0.1 and 1.2 +/- 0.1 for root(NN)-N-s = 62.4 and 200 GeV, respectively. The energy dependence of this ratio could reflect varying contributions from baryons to charged particles, while mesons are the dominant contributors to photon production in the given kinematic region. The photon pseudorapidity distributions normalized by average number of participating nucleon pairs, when plotted as a function of eta-Y-beam, are found to follow a longitudinal scaling independent of centrality and colliding ion species at both beam energies. Microstructure and mechanical properties of peak-aged Mg-4.5Zn-xGd (x=0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt.%) alloys have been investigated. The results showed that the grain size of the alloys was refined gradually with increasing Gd. Mg5Gd and Mg3Gd2Zn3 phases were found in the Gd-containing alloys. The strengths were greatly improved with Gd additions, and the highest strength level was obtained in the Mg-4.5Zn-1.5Gd alloy, in which the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were 231 MPa and 113 MPa, respectively.

Microstructures and mechanical properties of the peak-aged Mg-4.5Zn-xGd (x = 0, 2, 3 and 5 wt.%) alloys have been investigated. The results showed that grain size increased with increasing Gd. Phase analysis showed that MgZn2 phase was observed in the Mg-4.5Zn alloy. While with Gd additions, Mg3Gd and Mg3Gd2Zn3 phases formed, and the volume fraction of the Mg3Gd2Zn3 phase increased with increasing Gd. Tensile test results indicated that the optimal mechanical properties were obtained in the Mg-4.5Zn-2Gd alloy, and the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were 215 MPa and 121 MPa, respectively.

Hydrogenation of maleic anhydride (MAH) with Pd/C catalysts in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) was investigated. The selectivity for gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) reached 97.3% in scCO(2) at 100% conversion of MAH, which was notably higher than that of 77.4% obtained in organic solvent of ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (EGDME). The particle size of Pd exhibited large influence on the reaction rate and selectivity of GBL. Higher selectivity of GBL was obtained with Pd/C catalyst of smaller Pd particle size, and the rate of GBL selectivity increase as a function of CO2 pressure was found to be significantly correlated with Pd particle size.

Starting from metal nitrate aqueous solutions and H3BO3, Y0.9-xGdxEu0.1Al3(BO3)(4) (0 <= x <= 0.9) phosphors were synthesized by spray pyrolysis followed by annealing at high temperature. The obtained phosphor particles have spherical morphology with size in the range 0.5-2 mu m. Independent of the x values in Y0.9-xGdxEu0.1Al3(BO3)(4) (0 <= x <= 0.9) phosphors, the Eu3+ ion shows its characteristic D-5(0), (1)-F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions with D-5(0)-F-7(2) red emission (612 nm) as the most prominent group. The photoluminescence intensity of phosphors increases with the increase of x value in Y0.9-xGdxEu0.1Al3(BO3)(4) (0 <= x <= 0.9) due to an energy migration process like Gd3+-(Gd3+)(n)-Eu3+ that occurred in the host materials.

Both absolute molecular weight and molecular sizes (radius of gyration and hydrodynamic radius) of a vinyl-type polynorbornene eluting from size-exclusion chromatography columns were determined by combined with a static and dynamic laser light scattering detector. The hydrodynamic radius of polymer fraction eluting from size-exclusion chromatography columns was obtained from dynamic laser light scattering measurements at only a single angle of 900 by introducing a correction factor. According to the scaling relationship between molecular sizes and molecular weight and the ratio between radius of gyration and hydrodynamic radius, the vinyl-type polynorbornene took a random coil conformation in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene at 150 degreesC.

Monte Carlo simulation has been used to investigate the effects of linear solvent molecular size on polymer chain conformation in solutions. Increasing the solvent molecular size leads to shrinkage of the polymer chains and increase of the critical overlap concentrations. The root-mean-square radius of gyration of polymer chains (R-g) is less sensitive to the variation of polymer concentration in solutions of larger solvent molecules. In addition, the dependency of R-g on polymer concentration under normal solvent conditions and solvent molecular size is in good agreement with scaling laws. When the solvent molecular size approaches the ideal end-to-end distance of the polymer chain, an extra aggregation of polymer chains occurs, and the solvent becomes the so-called medium-sized solvent. When the size of solvent molecules is smaller than the medium size, the polymer chains are swollen or partially swollen. However, when the size of solvent molecules is larger than the medium size, the polymer coils shrink and segregate, enwrapped by the large solvent molecules.

A series of acrylic impact modifiers (AIMS) with different particle sizes ranging from 55.2 to 927.0 nm were synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization, and the effect of the particle size on the brittle-ductile transition of impact-modified poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was investigated. For each AIM, a series of PVC/AIM blends with compositions of 6, 8, 10, 12, and 15 phr AIM in 100 phr PVC were prepared, and the Izod impact strengths of these blends were tested at 23 degrees C. For AIMs with particle sizes of 55.2, 59.8, 125.2, 243.2, and 341.1 nm, the blends fractured in the brittle mode when the concentration of AIM was lower than 10 phr, whereas the blends showed ductile fracture when the AIM concentration reached 10 phr. It was concluded that the brittle-ductile transition of the PVC/AIM blends was independent of the particle size in the range of 55.2-341.1 nm. When the particle size was greater than 341.1 nm, however, the brittle-ductile transition shifted to a higher AIM concentration with an increase in the particle size. Furthermore, the critical interparticle distance was found not to be the criterion of the brittle-ductile transition for the PVC/AIM blends.

Gold nanoparticles capped by 4-ferrocene thiophenol with an average core size of 2.5 nm and surface plasmon absorbance at 522 nm were place-exchanged with 1,8-octanedithiol, and then self-assembled onto the gold electrode via tail SH group. The self-assembly was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammograms examined the coverage fraction of the self-assembled monolayers of the electroactive gold nanoparticles and the formal potential of the indicated SAMs. Further experiments exhibited that the electrode process was controlled by surface confined faradic reactions.

Silicate oxyapatite La-9.33 (SiO6)(4)O-2:A (A = Eu3+, Tb3+ and/or Ce3+) phosphor films and their patterning were fabricated by a sol-gel process combined with soft lithography. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, optical microscopy and photoluminescence spectra, as well as lifetimes, were used to characterize the resulting films. The results of XRD indicated that the films began to crystallize at 800degreesC and the crystallinity increased with the increase in annealing temperatures. Transparent nonpatterned phosphor films were uniform and crack-free, which mainly consisted of rodlike grains with a size between 150 and 210 nm. Patterned thin films with different bandwidths (20, 50 mum) were obtained by the micromoulding in capillaries technique. The doped rare earth ions (Eu3+, Tb3+ and Ce3+) showed their characteristic emission in crystalline La-9.33(SiO6)(4)O-2 phosphor films, i.e. Eu3+ D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4), Tb3+ D-5(3,4)-F-7(J) (J = 3, 4, 5, 6) and Ce3+ 5d (D-2)-4f (F-2(2/5), F-2(2/7)) emissions, respectively. Both the lifetimes and PL intensity of the Eu3+, Tb3+ ions increased with increasing annealing temperature from 800 to 1100 degreesC, and the optimum concentrations for Eu3+, Tb3+ were determined to be 9 and 7 mol% of La3+ in La-9.33(SiO6)(4)O-2 films, respectively. An energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ was observed in the La-9.33(SiO6)(4)O-2:Ce, Tb phosphor films, and the energy transfer efficiency was estimated as a function of Tb3+ concentration.

To obtain a novel support with practical value for metallocene catalyst (eta -C5H5)TiCl3 (CpTiCl3), poly (styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) /SiO2 nanoscale hybrid material (SrP/SiO2) was firstly produced as support. After pretreatment by methylaluminoxane (MAO), the hybrid materials reacted with CpTiCl3. The results from SAXS, SEM and TEM indicated the morphology and structure of organic/inorganic hybrid materials, and the size of inorganic particle in hybrid was nanoscale. The results from IR and XPS showed that there were two possible cationic active species in the hybrid-supported catalyst, the polymerization results of styrene proved this possibility.

The effect of adding diblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) (P(S-b-4VPy), to immiscible blends of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) on the morphology, thermal transition, crystalline structure, and rheological and mechanical properties of the blends has been investigated. The diblock copolymer was synthesized by sequential anionic copolymerization and was melt-blended with sPS and TPU. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the added block copolymer reduced the domain size of the dispersed phase in the blends. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) revealed that the extent of compatibility between sPS and TPU affected the crystallization of the sPS in the blends. Tensile strength and elongation at break increased, while the dynamic modulus and complex viscosity decreased with the amount of P(S-b-4VPy) in the blend. The compatibilizing effect of the diblock copolymer is the result of its location at the interface between the sPS and the TPU phases and penetration of the blocks into the: corresponding phases, i.e. the polystyrene block enters the noncrystalline regions of the sPS, and the poly(4-vinylpyridine) block interacts with TPU through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. This article describes a quantitative study of the diffusion rate of ferrocene(Fc) dissolved in ploy(ethylene glycol)(PEG) medium containing MClO(4)(M = Li+, Na+, Bu(4)N(+), Hx(4)N(+)). The apparent diffusion coefficient D-app and the active concentration c(a) of Fc were simultaneously measured by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry. The D-app and c(a) of Fc have been estimated in PEG containing different concentrations and sizes of supporting electrolyte, and the dependence of D-app on ferrocene concentrations has been observed. The values of D-app decrease with increasing concentrations of Fc, increasing concentrations of LiClO4 or the ratio (O:Li) and also with 4 decreasing cation radius of the electrolyte. The temperature dependencies conform to a simple free volume model. The concentration and size of the counterion dependencies of the diffusion rate are similar to the behavior of their dependencies of ionic conductivity in polyelectrolyte.
