A one-meter long column packed with silica gel is used to separate light hydrocarbons. The silica gel has been modified with several kinds of gas chromatography stationary phases. Among these, PEG 2000 shows fairly good effect when using 80-100 meshes silica gel for the separation of mixture of methane, ethane, ethylene, acetylene, propane, propylene and n-, i-butane. The different behavior of silica gel between batch to batch is also found. When silica gel is coated with a small amount of Al2O3 prepared with sol-gel method, better resolution has been observed on a 2-meter column compared with the non-modified silica gel.

Ti/SiO2 (or Ti/de[B]SiO2) catalysts were prepared by grafting deboronated silica xerogel with gaseous TiCl4. Using TBHP as oxidant, the Ti/de[B]SiO2 catalyst shows both catalytic activity and selectivity in epoxidation of cyclohexene better than 80%, and the activity can be comparable with that of Ti-beta. The catalytic activity of Ti/de[B]SiO2 strongly depends on the content of B of support precursor, and the pretreatment temperature of the support. IR studies show that the sites in the deboronated silica xerogel to react with TiCl4 are not only the silanol nests, but also the defect sites produced during the deboronation. Silica-supported Rh catalysts with different Rh particle dimensions were investigated for CO hydrogenation. The catalysts were characterized by various techniques such as TEM, H-2-TPR and N-2 adsorption to study the catalyst morphology, the size distributions of Rh particles and the silica pores. It was found that the distribution and the size of Rh particles were affected by the silica pores, and the metal grains were enclosed in the pores of the support, and thereby their growth was limited. The catalytic activity and selectivity to C-2-oxygenates for CO hydrogenation were found to be significantly controlled by the Rh particle sizes, and the higher activity and selectivity to C2-oxygenates were obtained over bigger Rh particles, within the range of the reported particle sizes.

In this paper, mechanical properties of silica-filled epoxy resin are tested. The tests show that at elevated temperatures, the material’s properties (e.g. yield stress, flow stress, etc.) vary immonotonically with filler volume fraction. Nanoindentation test results suggest that an interface region, stronger than the matrix, is formed in the materials. The formation of the interface has positive effects on the yield strengths of materials. The addition of particles in the matrix produces a large disturbance in stress distribution, leading to stress concentration in the matrix. The stress concentration has negative effects on the yield strengths of materials. The calculation demonstrates that the maximum stress in samples varies immonotonically with particulate concentration. So, the immonotonic variation of mechanical behavior of materials may be rooted in the contradictory effects of the interface region and the stress concentration caused by particulate addition.

The concept of biosensor based on imaging ellipsometry was proposed ten years ago. Its principle and the methodology as well as some solutions to problems which have to be faced during the development are mentioned. Its properties of phase sensitive, high throughput and fast sampling, as well as label-free, sensitivity better than 1 ng/ml for Immunoglobulin G, and real-time analysis for protein interaction process, etc. provide a potential for applications in biomedicine field. The recent biosensing development with total internal reflection imaging ellipsometry is presented also. [GRAPHICS] An example of 48 protein arrays in matrix. (C) 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
