Prior synaptic or cellular activity influences degree or threshold for subsequent induction of synaptic plasticity, a process known as metaplasticity. Thus, the continual synaptic activity, spontaneous miniature excitatory synaptic current (mEPSC) may correlate to the induction of long-teen depression (LTD). Here, we recorded whole-cell EPSC and mEPSC alternately in the Schaffer-CA1 synapses in brain slice of young rats, and found that this recording configuration affected neither EPSC nor mEPSC. Low frequency stimulation (LFS) induced variable magnitudes of LTD. Remarkably, larger magnitudes of LTD were significantly correlated to smaller amplitude/lower frequency of the basal mEPSC. Furthermore, under the conditions reduced amplitude/frequency of the basal mEPSC by exposure to behavioral stress immediately before slice preparation or low concentration of calcium in bath solution, the magnitudes of LTD were still inversely correlated to mEPSC amplitude/frequency. These new findings suggest that spontaneous mEPSC may reflect functional and/or structural aspects of the synapses, the synaptic history ongoing metaplasticity. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Three groups of gynogenetic diploid bighead carp were successfully obtained by means of artificial gynogenesis. The activation rates of gynogenesis varied from 75.9% to 98.8%, and the frequency of spontaneous diploidization was around 0.4%. Over 2000 normally gynogenetic diploid fry were obtained in three gynogenetic groups. The haploid karyotype consisted of nine metacentric, 12 submetacentric, three subtelocentric chromosomes and 45 arms. The chromosome number was 48 from gynogenetic diploid. The results showed that the genetic material of offspring was maternal. The aneuploid hybrid embryos of bighead carp and Xingguo red common carp with chromosome numbers ranging from 28 to 73 did not survive post hatch, likely the result of incompatibility between the nucleus and the cytoplasm of two parents. Sixty RAPD primers from three groups were used for total DNA amplification of gynogenetic offspring, maternal and 'paternal' fish. A total of 451 bands were amplified from three kinds of samples above. From maternal bighead carp, 256 bands were amplified; however, there were 251 shared bands between maternal and gynogenetic bighead carp. From artificial gynogenetic offspring, two 'paternal' DNA segments without an expression function were found. An UPGMA tree showed that gynogenetic offspring were closely clustered and the genetic identity among them was very high (0.956).

Two growth trials using a range of ration sizes from starvation to maximum feeding suggested that linear relationships existed between specific growth rate and ration size for Nile tilapia and givel carp, Continuous measurement of activity showed that activity level, in terms of distance swum per day, was not affected significantly by ration size in both Nile tilapia and gibel carp. We propose a simple method to detect the relative strength of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions in quantum wells (QWs) without relying on the directional-dependent physical quantities. This method utilizes the two different critical gate voltages that leading to the remarkable signals of SU(2) symmetry, which happens to reflect the intrinsic-structure-inversion asymmetry of the QW. We support our proposal by the numerical calculation of in-plane relaxation times based on the self-consistent eight-band Kane model. We find that the two different critical gate voltages leading to the maximum spin-relaxation times [one effect of the SU(2) symmetry] can simply determine the ratio of the coefficients of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms. Our proposal can also be generalized to extract the relative strengths of the spin-orbit interactions in quantum-wire and quantum-dot structures.

The optical properties of the strained wurtzite GaN are investigated theoretically within the nearest neighbor tight-binding method. The piezoelectric effect is also taken into account. The empirical rule has been used in the strained band-structure calculation. The results show that the excitonic transition energies are anisotropic in the c-plane in a high electronic concentration system and have a 60 degrees periodicity, which is in agreement with experiment. A theoretical analysis has been performed by means of the plane-wave expansion method to examine the dispersion properties of photons at high symmetry points of an InP based two-dimensional photonic crystal with square lattice. The Q factors are compared qualitatively. The mechanism of surface-emitting is due to the photon manipulation by periodic dielectric materials in terms of Bragg diffraction. A surface-emitting photonic crystal resonator is designed based on the phenomenon of slow light. Photonic crystal slabs with different unit cells are utilized in the simulation. The results indicate that the change of the air holes can affect the polarization property of the modes. So we can find a way to improve the polarization by reducing the symmetry of the structure.

We investigated the dynamics of spontaneous emission from a photonic crystal etched into a SiN slab. After fitting the decay curves of the emission to double exponential functions, we divided the dynamic process of the spontaneous emission into a fast process and a slow process. It was observed that the presence of the photonic crystal increased the proportion of the fast decay component, and consequently, the emission rate and time-integrated emission intensity were also enhanced. These enhancements were a result of the coupling of the guide modes to the leaky modes of the photonic crystal slab waveguide. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

We have theoretically investigated the energy band structures of two typical magnetic superlattices formed by perpendicular or parallel magnetization ferromagnetic stripes periodically deposited on a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), where the magnetic profile in the perpendicular magnetization is of inversion anti-symmetry, but of inversion symmetry in parallel magnetization, respectively. We have shown that the energy bands of perpendicular magnetization display the spin-splitting and transverse wave-vector symmetry, while the energy bands of the parallel magnetization exhibit spin degeneration and transverse wave-vector asymmetry. These distinguishing spin-dependent and transverse wave-vector asymmetry features are essential for future spintronics devices applications. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigate the lifetime distribution functions of spontaneous emission from line antennas embedded in finite-size two-dimensional 12-fold quasi-periodic photonic crystals. Our calculations indicate that two-dimensional quasi-periodic crystals lead to the coexistence of both accelerated and inhibited decay processes. The decay behaviors of line antennas are drastically changed as the locations of the antennas are varied from the center to the edge in quasi-periodic photonic crystals and the location of transition frequency is varied.

Starting from effective mass Hamiltonian, we systematically investigate the symmetry of low-dimensional structures with spin-orbit interaction and transverse magnetic field. The position-dependent potentials are assumed to be space symmetric, which is ever-present in theory and experiment research. By group theory, we analyze degeneracy in different cases. Spin-orbit interaction makes the transition between Zeeman sub-levels possible, which is originally forbidden within dipole approximation. However, a transition rule given in this paper for the first time shows that the transition between some levels is forbidden for space symmetric potentials. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. A gain measurement technique, based on Fourier series expansion of periodically extended single fringe of the amplified spontaneous emission spectrum, is proposed for Fabry-Perot semiconductor lasers. The underestimation of gain due to the limited resolution of the measurement system is corrected by a factor related to the system response function. The standard deviations of the gain-reflectivity product under low noise conditions are analyzed for the Fourier series expansion method and compared with those of the Hakki-Paoli method and Cassidy's method. The results show that the Fourier series expansion method is the least sensitive to noise among the three methods. The experiment results obtained by the three methods are also presented and compared.

In this work we first derive a generalized conditional master equation for quantum measurement by a mesoscopic detector, then study the readout characteristics of qubit measurement where a number of remarkable new features are found. The work would, in particular, highlight the qubit spontaneous relaxation effect induced by the measurement itself rather than an external thermal bath.

A self-consistent solution of conduction band profile and subband energies for AlxGa1-xN-GaN quantum well is presented by solving the Schrodinger and Poisson equations. A new method is introduced to deal with the accumulation of the immobile charges at the AlxGa1-xN-GaN interface caused by spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization in the process of solving the Poisson equation. The effect of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization is taken into account in the calculation. It also includes the effect of exchange-correlation to the one electron potential on the Coulomb interaction. Our analysis is based on the one electron effective-mass approximation and charge conservation condition. Based on this model, the electron wave functions and the conduction band structure are derived. We calculate the intersubband transition wavelength lambda(21) for different Al molar fraction of barrier and thickness of well. The calculated result can fit to the experimental data well. The dependence of the absorption coefficient a on the well width and the doping density is also investigated theoretically. (C) 2004 American Vacuum Society.

Mode characteristics for two-dimensional equilateral-polygonal microresonators are investigated based on symmetry analysis and finite-difference time-domain numerical simulation. The symmetries of the resonators can be described by the point group C-Nv, accordingly, the confined modes in these resonators can be classified into irreducible representations of the point group C-Nv. Compared with circular resonators, the modes in equilateral-polygonal resonators have different characteristics due to the break of symmetries, such as the split of double-degenerate modes, high field intensity in the center region, and anomalous traveling-wave modes, which should be considered in the designs of the polygonal resonator microlasers or optical add-drop filters.
