The structure and frequencies of C12B24N24 have been calculated by means of an ab initio method. By comparing the average bond energies with C-60, the calculated results predict that the cage C12B24N24 is a stable molecule. The calculated results indicate that the cage molecule C12B24N24 has a relative large HOMO-LUMO energy gap and a low rigidity The structures and stability of six possible isomers of C2B4N4 are used to suggest a possible transformation path from the pentagon CB2N2 to the C12B24N24 materials. In this paper, a quantum chemistry method was used to investigate the effect of different sizes of substituted phenanthrolines on absorption, energy transfer, and the electroluminescent performance of a series of Eu(TTA)(3)L (L = [1,10] phenanthroline (Phen), Pyrazino[2,3-f][1,10]phenanthroline (PyPhen), 2-methylprrazino[2,3-f][1,10] phenanthroline(MPP), dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine(DPPz), 11-methyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'c]phenazine(MDPz), 11.12-dimethyldipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine(DDPz), and benzo[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine (BDPz)) complexes. Absorption spectra calculations show that different sizes of secondary ligands have different effects on transition characters, intensities, and absorption peak positions.

Quantum-chemistry methods were explored to investigate the electronic structures, injection and transport properties, absorption and phosphorescence mechanism of a series of blue-emitting Ir(III) complexes {[(F-2-ppy)(2)Ir(pta -X/pyN4)], where F-2-ppy = (2,4-difluoro)phenylpyridine; pta = pyridine-1,2,4-triazole; X = phenyl(1); p-tolyl (2); 2,6-difluororophenyl (3); -CF3 (4), and pyN4 = pyridine-1,2,4-tetrazolate (5)}, which are used as emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The mobility of hole and electron were studied computationally based on the Marcus theory. Calculations of Ionization potentials (IPs) and electron affinities (EAs) were used to evaluate the injection abilities of holes and electrons into these complexes.

Well-ordered single, double/four parallel, three/four-strands helical chains, and five-strand helical chain with a single atom chain at the center of Si nanowires (NWs) inside single-walled carbon nanotubes (Si-n@SWCNTs) are obtained by means of molecular dynamics. On the basis of these optimized structures, the structural evolution of Si-n@SWCNTs subjected to axial stress at low temperature is also investigated. Interestingly, the double parallel chains depart at the center and transform into two perpendicular parts, the helical shell transformed into chain, and the strand number of Si NWs increases during the stress load. Through analyzis of pair correlation function (PCF), the density of states (DOS), and the z-axis polarized absorption spectra of Si-n@SWCNTs, we find that the behavior of Si-n@SWCNTs under stress strongly depends on SWCNTs' symmetry, diameter, as well as the shape of Nws, which provide valuable information for potential application in high pressure cases such as seabed cable.

The difference in the electrochemical behavior of hydroquinone and pyrocatechol. at platinum and gold surfaces was analyzed using voltammetry and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that the hydroquinone derivatives are adsorbed on a gold surface with vertical orientation, which makes the electron transfer between the bulk species and the electrode surface easier than that in the case of flat adsorption of hydroquinone derivatives that occurs at a platinum electrode. The formation of the vertical conformation and the rapid process of electron transfer were also confirmed by quantum chemistry calculations. In addition, the pre-adsorbed iodine on the electrodes played a key role on the adsorbed configuration and. electron transfer of redox species.

LaC3n+ (n = 0, 1, 2) clusters have been studied using B3LYP (Becke 3-parameter-Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional method. The basis set is Dunning/ Huzinaga valence double zeta for carbon and [2s2p2d] for lanthanum, denoted LANL1DZ. Four isomers are presented for each cluster; two of them are edge binding isomers with C-2 upsilon symmetry, the other two are Linear chains with C-infinity upsilon symmetry. Meanwhile, two spin states for each isomer, that is, singlet and triplet for LaC3+, doublet and quartet for LaC3 and LaC32+, respectively, are also considered. Geometries, vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities, and other quantities are reported and discussed. The results indicate that at some spin states; the C-2 upsilon symmetry isomers are the dominant structures, while for the other spin states, linear isomers are energetically favored. The dissolution behaviours of La and Nd in their chloride molten salts were studied by means of the see-through cell, electrochemical weak polarization and quantum chemistry (extended Huckel molecular orbital). The reasons for the low current efficiencies of rare earth metals and the difference between La and Nd in their own chloride electrolytes on the basis of the solubility, rate of dissolution, and existing state of the metals dissolved as well as the structure of the melts, are discussed.

A new topological index, the general a(N)-index (GAI), on quantum chemistry, is described in this paper. The GAI can be applied to molecules that contain heteroatoms and multiple bonds, and performs well in distinguishing cis/trans isomers. The relationships between the GAIs and physicochemical properties of olefins and neutral phosphorus compounds were observed with satisfactory results.

Four research methods, such as weight loss test, electrochemical techniques, adsorption isotherm, and quantum chemical calculation, were employed in this paper to study the inhibition efficiency (IE) and inhibition mechanism of three 2H-pyrazole-triazole derivatives, BHOT, FHOT, and CHOT in 1 M HCl solution for mild steel. Using the electrochemical technique, three inhibitors were proved to show a mixed-type character for mild steel by suppressing both anodic and cathodic reactions on the steel surface. The adsorption models of three compounds were established at different temperatures according to their adsorption isotherms. The results of the quantum chemical calculation method indicated that the adsorption sites of 2H-pyrazole-triazole derivatives were strongly centralized on benzene ring, triazole ring, or other substituents. All the results showed that the three derivatives were excellent inhibitors in I M HCl solution for mild steel.

Berberine was abstracted from coptis chinensis and its inhibition efficiency on corrosion of mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 was investigated through weight loss experiment, electrochemical techniques and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) with energy disperse spectrometer (EDS). The weight loss results showed that berbefine is an excellent corrosion inhibitor for mild steel immersed in 1M H2SO4. Potentiodynamic curves suggested that berbefine suppressed both cathodic and anodic processes for its concentrations higher than 1.0 x 10(-4) M and mainly cathodic reaction was suppressed for lower concentrations. The Nyquist diagrams of impedance for mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 containing berbefine with different concentrations showed one capacitive loop, and the polarization resistance increased with the inhibitor concentration rising. A good fit to Flory-Huggins isotherm was obtained between surface coverage degree and inhibitor concentration. The surface morphology and EDS analysis for mild steel specimens in sulfuric acid in the absence and presence of the inhibitor also proved the results obtained by the weight loss and electrochemical experiments. The correlation of inhibition effect and molecular structure of berberine was then discussed by quantum chemistry study. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Electrochemical measurement, quantum chemical method, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to investigate the inhibitive effect of 2,3,5-triphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride (TTC) and 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine(TPT) on the corrosion of mild steel in 1mol.L-1 HCl at room temperature. Impedance spectroscopy measurement showed that the polarization resistance increased and that double layer capacitance decreased with the increase in the inhibitive concentration, and the results of potentiodynamic polarization showed that the inhibitors suppressed both cathodic and anodic processes of steel corrosion without change in the mechanism. Higher the orbital density distribution strength of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, higher is the molecule dipole, and lower energy gap between the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital resulted in higher inhibitory efficiency. The results of SEM analysis showed that the metal was protected from aggressive corrosion by the addition of TTC and TPT.

Four main methods, such as weight loss test, EIS, adsorption isotherm and quantum chemical calculation were employed to study the inhibition efficiency and mechanism of three derivatives on mild steel in acid solution, whose inhibition efficiency were proved to follow the order of DMTT > NMTT > PMTT, The adsorption model of DMTT was established at different temperature according to the fitted results. The quantum chemical results indicated that the adsorption sites of the derivatives were strongly centralized on benzene ring, triazole ring, etc. QSAR was set up to explain the relationship of molecular structure and the inhibition effect of the derivatives.
