Traditional agricultural systems are threatened world-wide mainly due to the introduction of modern agricultural techniques and the emigration of farm labourers from remote rural villages. The objective of the programme 'Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems' (GIAHS), initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2002, is dynamic conservation of traditional agricultural systems. This article addresses the definition and content of agricultural heritage systems and discusses conservation options in the light of developing rural tourism. An explorative survey was conducted in Longxian village, situated in Zhejiang Province, southern China, focusing on the tourism potential of a typical Rice-Fish Agricultural System. The identification of heritage resources is a first step in the process of transforming an agricultural landscape into a cultural tourism landscape. However, the future of these landscapes is in the hands of a range of stakeholders and depends on their capacity to manage, in a sustainable way, tourism development strategies alongside conservation policies.

Edwardsiella tarda is an important aquaculture pathogen that can infect a wide range of marine and freshwater fish worldwide. In this study, a modified E. tarda strain, TX5RM, was selected by multiple passages of the pathogenic E. tarda strain TX5 on growth medium containing the antibiotic rifampicin. Compared to the wild type strain, the rifampicin-resistant mutant TX5RM (i) shows drastically increased median lethal dose and reduced capacity to disseminate in and colonize fish tissues and blood; (ii) exhibits slower growth rates when cultured in rich medium or under conditions of iron depletion; and (iii) differs in the production profile of whole-cell proteins. The immunoprotective potential of TX5RM was examined in a Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) model as a vaccine delivered via intraperitoneal injection, oral feeding, bath immersion, and oral feeding plus immersion. All the vaccination trials, except those of injection, were performed with a booster at 3-week after the first vaccination. The results showed that TX5RM administered via all four approaches produced significant protection, with the highest protection levels observed with TX5RM administered via oral feeding plus immersion, which were, in terms of relative percent of survival (RPS), 80.6% and 69.4% at 5- and 8-week post-vaccination, respectively. Comparable levels of specific serum antibody production were induced by TX5RM-vaccinated via different routes. Microbiological analyses showed that TX5RM was recovered from the gut, liver, and spleen of the fish at 1-10 days post-oral vaccination and from the spleen, liver, kidney, and blood of the fish at 1-14 days post-immersion vaccination. Taken together, these results indicate that TX5RM is an attenuated E. tarda strain with good vaccine potential and that a combination of oral and immersion vaccinations may be a good choice for the administration of live attenuated vaccines. The changes of corrosion potential (E-corr) of metals immersed in seawater were investigated with electrochemical technology and epifluoresence microscopy. In natural seawater, changes of E-corr were determined by the surface corrosion state of the metal. E-corr of passive metals exposed to natural seawater shifted to noble direction for about 150 mV in one day and it didn't change in sterile seawater. The in-situ observation showed that biofilms settled on the surfaces of passive metals when E-corr moved in noble direction. The bacteria number increased on the metal surface according to exponential law and it was in the same way with the ennoblement of E-corr. The attachment of bacteria during the initial period played an important role in the ennoblement of E-corr and it is believed that the carbohydrate and protein in the biofilm are reasons for this phenomenon. The double layer capacitance (C-dl) of passive metals decreased with time when immersed in natural seawater, while remained almost unchanged in sterile seawater. The increased thickness and reduced dielectric constant of C-dl may be reasons.

The VEGETATION (VGT) sensor in SPOT 4 has four spectral bands that are equivalent to Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) bands (blue, red, near-infrared and mid-infrared spectral bands) and provides daily images of the global land surface at a 1-km spatial resolution. We propose a new index for identifying and mapping of snow ice cover, namely the Normalized Difference Snow/Ice Index (NDSII), which uses reflectance values of red and mid-infrared spectral bands of Landsat TM and VGT. For Landsat TM data, NDSII is calculated as NDSIITM =(TM3 -TM5)/(TM3 +TM5); for VGT data, NDSII is calculated as NDSIIVGT =(B2- MIR)/(B2 + MIR). As a case study we used a Landsat TM image that covers the eastern part of the Qilian mountain range in the Qinghai-Xizang (Tibetan) plateau of China. NDSIITM gave similar estimates of the area and spatial distribution of snow/ice cover to the Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI=(TM2-TM5)/(TM2+TM5)) which has been proposed by Hall et al. The results indicated that the VGT sensor might have the potential for operational monitoring and mapping of snow/ice cover from regional to global scales, when using NDSIIVGT.
