Hole mobility in a copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc)-based top-contact transistor has been studied with various organic layer thicknesses. It is found that the transistor performance depends on the thickness of the CuPc layer, and the mobility increases with the increase in the CuPc layer and saturated at the thickness of 6 ML. The upper layers do not actively contribute to the carrier transport in the organic films. The morphology of the organic layer grown on the bare SiO2/Si substrate is also presented. The analysis of spatial correlations shows that the CuPc films grow on the SiO2 according to the mixed-layer mode.

Zinc(II)-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazolate complex is an excellent white-light-emitting material. Despite some studies devoted to this complex, no information on the real origin of the unusually broad electroluminescent (EL) emission is available. Therefore, we investigate photoluminescent and EL properties of the zinc complex. Orange phosphorescent emission at 580 nm was observed for the complex in thin film at 77 K, whereas only fluorescent emission was obtained at room temperature. Molecular orbitals, excitation energy, and emission energy of the complex were investigated using quantum chemical calculations. We fabricated the device with a structure of ITO/F16CuPc(5.5 nm)/Zn-complex/Al, where F16CuPc is hexadecafluoro copper phthalocyanine. The EL spectra varied strongly with the thickness of the emissive layer. We observed a significant change in the emission spectra with the viewing angles. Optical interference effects and light emission originating both from fluorescence and from phosphorescence can explain all of the observed phenomena, resulting in the broad light emission for the devices based on the Zn complex. We calculated the charge transfer integral and the reorganization energy to explain why the Zn complex is a better electron transporter than a hole transporter.

Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) having source/drain electrodes sandwiched between copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) layers, CuPc/CoPc SC OTFTs, are investigated. Comparing their properties with that of CuPc-based top-contact OTFT, field-effect mobility increases from 0.04 to 0.11 cm(2)/Vs, threshold voltage shifts from -13.8 to -8.9 V, and the current on/off ratio maintains at a level of 10(5). A top-contact OTFT with a layer of CuPc and a layer of CoPc (10%)-CuPc mixture reveals that the combination of CuPc and CoPc enhances charge injection from the source electrode into the active layer and increases the off-state current. The sandwich configuration increases the field-effect mobility, reduce the threshold voltage, and improve the on/off ratio at the same time. Our results indicate that using a double-layer of active organic materials in sandwich configuration is an effective way to improve OTFT performance.

Ambipolar organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are produced, based on organic heterojunctions fabricated by a two-step vacuum-deposition process. Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) deposited at a high temperature (250 degrees C) acts as the first (p-type component) layer, and hexadecafluorophthalocyaninatocopper (F16CuPc) deposited at room temperature (25 degrees C) acts as the second (n-type component) layer. A heterojunction with an interpenetrating network is obtained as the active layer for the OFETs. These heterojunction devices display significant ambipolar charge transport with symmetric electron and hole mobilities of the order of 10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in air. Conductive channels are at the interface between the F16CuPc and CuPc domains in the interpenetrating networks. Electrons are transported in the F16CuPc regions, and holes in the CuPc regions. The molecular arrangement in the heterojunction is well ordered, resulting in a balance of the two carrier densities responsible for the ambipolar electrical characteristics. The thin-film morphology of the organic heterojunction with its interpenetrating network structure can be controlled well by the vacuum-deposition process.

N-type organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) employing hexadecafluorophthalocyaninatocopper (F16CuPc) as active layer and p-type copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) as buffer layer are demonstrated. The highest field-effect mobility is 7.6x10(-2) cm(2)/V s. The improved performance was attributed to the decrease of contact resistance due to the introduction of highly conductive F16CuPc/CuPc organic heterojunction. Therefore, current method provides an effective path to improve the performance of OTFTs.

A diode with a reverse rectifying characteristics was fabricated based on the organic heterojunction of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and copper-hexadecafluoro-phthalocyanine (F16CuPc). At the heterojunction interface, HOMO of CuPc is bended upwards and LUMO of F16CuPc is bended downwards, since the charge carriers were accumulated at both side of the interface, electrons in F16CuPc and holes in CuPc. The thickness of holes accumulated at the CuPc layer is about 10 nm. which was determined by fabricating organic field-effect transistors with active layers in series of thickness. By utilizing the heterojunction-effect, the threshold voltage in organic transistors can be modified.

The effect of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and LiF interfacial layers on the charge-carrier injection in NN'-di(naphthalene-l-yl)N,N'-diphenyl-benzidine (NPB)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium (Alq(3)) organic heterojunction devices have been studied through the analysis of current-voltage characteristics. The investigation clearly demonstrated that the hole injection into NPB from anode is Fowler-Nordheim (FN) tunneling and the electron injection into Alq3 from cathode is Richardson-Schottky (RS) thermionic emission. The barrier heights obtained from the FN and RS models proved that the band alignments for charge-carrier injection are greatly improved by the CuPc and LiF interfacial layers, which should fully clarify the role of the interfacial layer on the improvement of device performance.

An organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) having a low-dielectric polymer layer between gate insulator and source/drain electrodes is investigated. Copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), a well-known organic semiconductor, is used as an active layer to test performance of the device. Compared with bottom-contact devices, leakage current is reduced by roughly one order of magnitude, and on-state current is enhanced by almost one order of magnitude. The performance of the device is almost the same as that of a top-contact device. The low-dielectric polymer may play two roles to improve OTFT performance. One is that this structure influences electric-field distribution between source/drain electrodes and semiconductor and enhances charge injection. The other is that the polymer influences growth behavior of CuPc thin films and enhances physical connection between source/drain electrodes and semiconductor channel. Advantages of the OTFT having bottom-contact structure make it useful for integrated plastic electronic devices.

Copper phthalocyanine doped polymethacrylate Langmuir-Blodgett films were transferred to align a nematic liquid crystal 5CB, It is found that the pre-tilt angle of the liquid crystal can be controlled with the variation of the doped copper phthalocyanine molecular ratio and is correlated with the dichroic ratio of the aligning layer. The polarity of the aligning layer is regarded as the most likely underlying factor that causes the different LC alignment configurations. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

The inhibition effect of metal-free phthalocyanine (H2Pc), copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and copper phthalocyanine tetrasulfuric tetrasodium salt (CuPc center dot S(4)center dot Na-4) on mild steel in I mol/l HCl in the concentration range of 1.0 X 10(-5) to 1.0 X 10(-3) mol/l was investigated by electrochemical test, scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS) and quantum chemical method. The potentiodynamic polarization curves of mild steel in hydrochloric acid containing these compounds showed both cathodic and anodic processes of steel corrosion were suppressed, and the Nyquist plots of impedance expressed mainly as a capacitive loop with different compounds and concentrations. For all these phthalocyanines, the inhibition efficiency increased with the increase in inhibitor concentration, while the inhibition efficiencies for these three phthalocyanines with the same concentration decreased in the order Of CuPc center dot S(4)center dot Na-4 > CuPc > H2Pc according to the electrochemical measurement results. The SEM/EDS analysis indicated that there are more lightly corroded and oxidative steel surface for the specimens after immersion in acid solution containing 1.0 x 10(-3) mol/l phthalocyanines than that in blank. The quantum chemical calculation results showed that the inhibition efficiency of these phthalocyanines increased with decrease in molecule's LUMO energy, which was different from the micro-cyclic compounds. The purpose of this research was to determine polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) in five chlorinated chemicals (phthalocyanine copper, phthalocyanine green, chloranil-1 and 2, and triclosan), and to compare their 2,3,7,8-tetrachlordibenzo-IpI-dioxin equivalents (TEQ). The distribution patterns of total PCDD/Fs and 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs were elucidated in detail. The TEQ values of toxic PCDD/Fs in all chemicals were in the range of 5.03-1379.55 ng I-TEQ/kg. The contribution of OCDD and OCDF in phthalocyanine green was 75% of the total TEQ. For chloranils, the maximum contribution of toxic PCDD/Fs was from 2,3,7,8-substituted HxCDF and 2,3,7,8-substituted HpCDF. The TEQ of HxCDF and HpCDF in chloranil-1 was 90% and in chloranil-2 was 71%. And the toxic contribution increased with the degree of chlorination for PCDFs. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The interfaces formed between copper-hexadecafluoro-phthalocyanine (F16CuPc) and 2,5-bis(4-biphenylyl) bithiophene (BP2T) were examined using photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. It is observed that in F16CuPc/BP2T the heterojunction is characterized by band bending in both materials, while in BP2T/F16CuPc the band bending is confined in BP2T only. The combination of the band bending and finite Debye lengths provides an explanation to the observed ambipolar behavior of the organic thin film transistors based on such heterojunctions.

The formation process of monolayer of octa-n-butoxy-2,3-naphthalocyanine copper ( I), [CuNc(OBu)(8)], on water subphase was studied. Its multilayers were successifully deposited on the hydrophilic substrates by Z-type deposition mode using LB technique. Stable solid film with a limiting molecular area of 0.74 nm(2) and a collapse pressure of 55 mN/m were formed. The LB film structure was characterized by IR and electronic absorption spectra. Macrocycle of CuNc (OBu)(8) molecules have a face-to-face arrangement in the multilayers. These films have good sensitivities to vapor of alcohols, with the following sequence of sensitivities: i-PrOH>EtOH>MeOH. The response time and recovery time of the LB films to vapor of MeOH, EtOH and i-PrOH[volume fraction (1-5) X 10(-5)] were within 2 and 5 seconds respectively, while those of the LB films to ammonia(1 X 10(-4)) were 30-60 seconds and 4-5 minutes respectively.
