To clarify the mechanism of organic-inorganic hybrid membrane formation by phase-inversion method, the thermodynamical and theological properties of PSF/TiO2 casting solution were investigated by the viscosity measurement and the triangle phase diagram, respectively. TiO2 introduction decreased the non-solvent tolerance of casting solution with non-solvent 20% ethanol aqueous solution, which caused thermodynamic enhancement of phase separation, and also resulted in the change of theological properties from Newtonian fluid to non-Newtonian fluid and the viscosity increase of casting solution, which induced rheological hindrance in demixing process

We have synthesized a porous co-polyimide film by coagulating a polyimide precursor in the non-solvent and thermal imidization. Factors affecting the morphology, pore size, porosity, and mechanical strength of the film were discussed. The porous polyimide matrix consists of a porous top layer and a spongy sub-structure with micropores. It is used as a porous matrix to construct sulfonated poly(styrene-ran-ethylene) (SPSE) infiltrated composite membrane for direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) application. Due to the complete inertness to methanol and the very high mechanical strength of the polyimide matrix, the swelling of the composite membrane is greatly suppressed and the methanol crossover is also significantly reduced, while high proton conductivity is still maintained. Because of its higher proton conductivity and less methanol permeability, single fuel cell performance test demonstrated that this composite membrane outperformed Nafion membrane.

Mixtures of methanol/MTBE were separated with polyimide/sulfonated poly(ether-sulfone) hollow-fiber membranes. The separation was attempted by vapor permeation instead of pervaporation, which had been used by most researchers. The separation properties of the hollow-fiber membranes and operating conditions are discussed. The results showed that separation factors of the blended polyimide/sulfonated poly(ether-sulfone) hollow-fiber membranes were extremely high for the methanol/MTBE mixtures.

A new method of measuring the mean size of solvent clusters in swollen polymer membrane is presented in this paper. This method is based on a combination of inverse gas chromatography (IGC) and equilibrium swelling. The mechanism is that weight fraction activity coefficient of solvent in swollen polymer is influenced by its clusters size. The mean clusters size of solvent in swollen polymer can be calculated as the quotient of the weight fraction activity coefficient of clustering system dividing the weigh fraction activity coefficient of non-clustering system. In this experiment, the weigh fraction activity coefficient of non-clustering system was measured with IGC. Methanol, ethanol and polyimide systems were tested with the new method at three temperatures, 20, 40, and 60degreesC. The mean clusters size of methanol in polyimide was five, four, and three at each temperature condition, respectively. Ethanol did not form clusters (the mean clusters size was one). In contrast to the inherent narrow temperature range in DSC, XRD, and FTIR methods, the temperature range in IGC and equilibrium swelling is broad. Compared with DSC. XRD. and FTIR, this new method can detect the clusters of solvent-polymer system at higher temperature.

An asymmetric hydrophobic microporous membrane from the copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and vinyliden fluoride (F2.4) has been fabricated by phase inversion process. Some characteristics, such as mechanical properties and hydrophobicity, have been examined and compared with polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) membrane. Experimental data exhibit F2.4 membrane excellent mechanical properties and hydrophobicity. F2.4 microporous membrane was approximately 6-8 times as high as PVDF membrane in stretching strain and extension ratio at break, and contact angle to distilled water of the fore (88.5degrees) was larger than the latter (80.0degrees), too. The results from membrane distillation (MD) process were well agreed with the fundamental laws of membrane distillation.

Blend modified polyimide (PI) hollow fiber membranes were used in vapor permeation for gas phase dehydration of ethanol. Dry air sweeping operation was used and the dry air was supplied by a dehumidification membrane module of compressed air. An integrated membrane process was composed. The effects of some factors, such as the modification of membrane materials, the humidity and current velocity of sweeping air, the operation temperature, on the efficiency of dehydration were discussed.

Separation of Th4+ and RE3+ was investigated by hollow fiber membrane extraction with N1923 in countercurrent recirculating operation. The effect of Hf concentration in aqueous phase and flow rates of aqueous and organic phases on mass transfer coefficient was tested. Then the extraction of Th4+ from RE sulfate obtained from Baotou ore was carried out. The results obtained show that the mass transfer coefficient of Th4+ changes with the flow rate of aqueous phase, but does not change with the flow rate of organic phase and H+ concentration in aqueous phase, which suggests that the mass transfer rate of Th4+ is controlled bg that in the water critical layer, The mass transfer rate of RE3+ does not change with the flow rate of water phase, changes a little with the flow rate of organic phase, and changes with H+ concentration, which suggests that the mass transfer rate is controlled by their reaction rate with N1923. Th4+ could be extracted completely in 8 h from RE sulfate solution of Baotou ore with relatively less extraction of RE3+. So the separation of radioactive element under the sealed condition could be done.

From the perspective of a polymer solution, the rheological properties of the popular polyethersulfone (PES)/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)/nonsolvent (NS) membrane-forming system were investigated thoroughly with a controlled stress rheometer (HAAKE RS75, Germany). The scope of the study included measurements of the controlled-stress flow curve, creep recovery, and dynamic oscillation. H2O, 1-butanol, ethylene glycol, and diethylene glycol were used as NS additives. The effects of the polymer concentration and the quality of the solvent mixture, as characterized by the approaching ratio, on the rheological behavior of the dopes were studied. Up to 38 wt % PES and extremely adjacent to the phase separation (i.e., the approaching ratio of the dope was 0.95), the viscous property dominated all the dopes, which behaved as Newtonian fluids. Moreover, all the membrane-forming dopes investigated were in the crossover regime in the semidilute region, in which the chains were overlapping but unentangled. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A perovskite-type oxide of Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta (BSCFO) with mixed electronic and oxygen ionic conductivity at high temperatures was used as an oxygen-permeable membrane. A tubular membrane of BSCFO made by extrusion method has been used in the membrane reactor to exclusively transport oxygen for the partial oxidation of ethane (POE) to syngas with catalyst of LiLaNiO/gamma-Al2O3 at temperatures of 800-900 degreesC. After only 30 min POE reaction in the membrane reactor, the oxygen permeation flux reached at 8.2 ml cm(-2) min(-1). After that, the oxygen permeation flux increased slowly and it took 12 h to reach at 11.0 ml cm(-2) min(-1). SEM and EDS analysis showed that Sr and Ba segregations occurred on the used membrane surface exposed to air while Co slightly enriched on the membrane surface exposed to ethane. The oxygen permeation flux increased with increasing of concentration of C2H6, which was attributed to increasing of the driving force resulting from the more reducing conditions produced with an increase of concentration of C2H6 in the feed gas. The tubular membrane reactor was successfully operated for POE reaction at 875 degreesC for more than 100 h without failure, with ethane conversion of similar to 100%, CO selectivity of >91% and oxygen permeation fluxes of 10-11 ml cm(-2) min(-1). Novel mixed conducting oxides, B-site Bi-doped perovskites were exploited and synthesized. Cubic perovskite structures were formed for BaBi0.2COyFe0.8-yO3-delta (y less than or equal to 0.4) and BaBixCo0.2Fe0.8-xP3-delta (x=0.1-0.5) The materials exhibited considerable high oxygen permeability at high temperature. The oxygen permeation flux of BaBi0.2Co0.35Fe0.45O3-delta membrane reached about 0.77 x 10(-6) mol/cm(2) s under an air/helium oxygen partial pressure gradient at 900 degrees C, which was much higher than that of other bismuth-contained mixed conducting membranes. The permeation fluxes of the materials increased with the increase of cobalt content, but no apparent simple relationship was found with the bismuth content. The materials also demonstrated excellent reversibility of oxygen adsorption and desorption. Stable time-related oxygen permeation fluxes were found for BaBi0.2CO0.35Fe0.45O3-delta and BaBi0.3Co0.2Fe0.5O3-delta a membranes at 875 degrees C.

NaA zeolite membrane was successfully synthesized on the porous alpha-Al2O3 support by microwave heating. The synthesis of NaA zeolite membrane in the microwave field only needs 15 min and the synthesis time is 10 times shorter than that by conventional heating. SEM characterization indicates that the zeolite crystals in the NaA zeolite membrane synthesized by microwave heating are uniform in size; the membrane thickness is about 4 mu m and is thinner than that of the NaA zeolite membrane synthesized by conventional heating. Gas permeation studies indicate that the permeances of the NaA zeolite membrane synthesized by microwave heating are 3-4 times higher than those of the NaA zeolite membrane synthesized by conventional heating, while their permselectivities are comparable.

Zeolite membranes with high permeance and separation factors are highly desirable for practical applications. Although, in the past, very good separation factors have been obtained, it has proved difficult to achieve a high permeance. Ken a comparative study of microwave versus conventional heating in the hydrothermal synthesis of NaA zeolite membranes is made. It is demonstrated that membranes prepared by microwave heating have not only a higher permeance but also a considerably shorter synthesis time. These observations are rationalized by examining the mechanism of membrane formation.

The synthesis of NaA zeolite membrane on a porous alpha -Al2O3 support by microwave heating (MH) was investigated. The formation of a NaA zeolite membrane was drastically promoted by MH. The synthesis time was reduced from 3 h for conventional heating (CH) to 15 min for MH. Surface seeding cannot only promote the formation of NaA zeolite on the support, but also inhibit the transformation of NaA zeolite into other types of zeolites. The thickness of the NaA zeolite membrane synthesized by MH was about 4 mum, thinner than that of NaA zeolite membrane synthesized by CH. The permeance of NaA zeolite membrane synthesized by MH was four times higher than that of the NaA zeolite membrane synthesized by CH, while their permselectivities were comparable. Multi-stage synthesis resulted in the transformation of NaA zeolite into other types of zeolites, and the perfection of the as-synthesized membrane decreased.
