Sustainable water use is seriously compromised in the North China Plain (NCP) due to the huge water requirements of agriculture, the largest use of water resources. An integrated approach which combines the ecosystem model with emergy analysis is presented to determine the optimum quantity of irrigation for sustainable development in irrigated cropping systems. Since the traditional emergy method pays little attention to the dynamic interaction among components of the ecological system and dynamic emergy accounting is in its infancy, it is hard to evaluate the cropping system in hypothetical situations or in response to specific changes. In order to solve this problem, an ecosystem model (Vegetation Interface Processes (VIP) model) is introduced for emergy analysis to describe the production processes. Some raw data, collected by investigating or observing in conventional emergy analysis, may be calculated by the VIP model in the new approach. To demonstrate the advantage of this new approach, we use it to assess the wheat-maize rotation cropping system at different irrigation levels and derive the optimum quantity of irrigation according to the index of ecosystem sustainable development in NCP. The results show, the optimum quantity of irrigation in this region should be 240-330 mm per year in the wheat system and no irrigation in the maize system, because with this quantity of irrigation the rotation crop system reveals: best efficiency in energy transformation (transformity = 6.05E + 4 sej/J); highest sustainability (renewability = 25%); lowest environmental impact (environmental loading ratio = 3.5) and the greatest sustainability index (Emergy Sustainability Index = 0.47) compared with the system in other irrigation amounts. This study demonstrates that application of the new approach is broader than the conventional emergy analysis and the new approach is helpful in optimizing resources allocation, resource-savings and maintaining agricultural sustainability.

The domain-structure of samples containing a series of starch/poly(sodium acrylate)-grafted superabsorbents, pure starch, pure poly(sodium acrylate), and blend of starch/poly(sodium acrylate) has been studied by high-resolution solid-state C-13 NMR spectroscopy at room temperature. The result shows that the crystallinity of starch decreases greatly in the grafted and blended samples.

Acetylated corn starches with different degrees of substitution (DS 0.85, DS 1.78, DS 2.89) were synthesized by the reaction of corn starch with acetic anhydride in the presence of acetic acid under varying reaction temperatures. The product was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, H-1 NMR, X-ray diffraction and contact angle measurement. Acid-base titration and H-1 NMR methods were employed to determine the degree of substitution of product. FTIR spectroscopic analysis showed that the characteristic absorption intensities of esterified starch increased with increase in the degree of substitution, and the characterized peak of hydroxyl group almost disappeared in the spectrum of DS 2.89 acetylated starch. The detailed chemical microstructure of native starch and acetylated starch was confirmed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and C-13-(1) H-1 COSY spectra.

This paper presented a new approach for preparing a new type of slow-release membrane-encapsulated urea fertilizer with starch-g-PLLA as biodegradable carrier materials. By solution-casting and washing rapidly with water the urea was individually encapsulated within the starch matrix modified by L-lactide through in situ graft-copolymerization.

Blends of poly(lactic acid)(PLA) and thermoplastic acetylated starch(ATPS) were prepared by means of the melt mixing method. The results show that PLA and ATPS were partially miscible, which was confirmed with the measurement of T-g by dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) and differrential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The mechanical and thermal properties of the blends were improved. With increasing the ATPs content, the elongation at break and impact strength were increased. The elongation at break increased from 5% of neat PLA to 25% of the blend PLA/ATPS40. It was found that the cold crystallization behavior of PLA changed evidently by addition of ATPS. The cold crystallization temperature(T-cc) of each of PLA/ATPS blends was found to shift to a lower temperature and the width of exothermic peak became narrow compared with that of neat PLA.

Cationic corn starch derivatives with a high degree of substitution are prepared in alkaline solution or in mixed media of organic solvent and water with different levels of the cationic reagent, 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride. The starch cationization yield is investigated, and the results indicate that the degree of substitution (DS) of the samples depends on the reaction conditions and reaction media. The maximum DS values are up to 1.37 in 1,4-dioxane alkali ne-aqueous solution. Meanwhile, the structures of the cationic starch derivatives are characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and C-13 NMR spectroscopy, as well as by SEM techniques.

The poly(L-lactide) (PLLA)/starch blends were prepared by the PLLA grafting starch (PLLA-g-St) copolymers as a compatibilizer, and their thermal, mechanical and morphological characterizations were performed to show the better performance of these blends compared to the virgin PLLA/starch blend without the compatibilizer, including PLLA crystallinity, interfacial adhesion between the PLLA matrix and starch dispersive phases, mechanical test, medium resistance, and contact angle. The 50/50 composite of PLLA/starch compatibilized by 10% PLLA-g-St gave a tensile strength of 24.7 MPa and an elongation at break of 8.7%, respectively, vs. 11.3 MPa and 1.5%, respectively, for the simple 50/50 blend of PLLA/starch.

IntroductionConventional polymers such as polyethyleneand polypropylene persistfor many years after landdisposal.Furthermore, plastics are often soiled byfood and other biological substances, making phys-ical recycling of those materials impractical andgenerally undesirable. In contrast, biodegradablepolymers disposed in bioactive environment are de-graded by the enzymatic action of microorganismssuch as bacteria, fungi, and algae. The worldwideconsumption of biodegradable polymers increasedfrom1.4×107kg in ...

A kind of full-biodegradable film material is discussed in this article. The film material is composed of starch, PVA, degradable polyesters(PHB, PHB-V, PCL) with built plasticizer, a cross-linking reinforcing agent and a wet strengthening agent. It contains a high percentage of starch, costs cheap and is excellent in weather fastness, temperature resistance and waterproof and it could be completely biodegraded. The present paper deals mainly with a new technical route using a new type of electromagnetic dynamic blow molding extruder and some effects on mechanical properties of the system.
