Structural and magnetic characteristics of Fe3-xSnxO4 (x < 0.3) nanoparticles synthesized using the precipitation exchange method have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, Mossbauer spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetization measurement. The mean particle dimension decreases from 8 to 6 nm, the lattice parameters enlarge, the saturation magnetization decreases, as well as the magnetization and the coercive field increase, with increasing tin-content. The paramagnetic property of the specimens indicates that the replacement of Fe3+ by Sn4+ on the octahedral sites of Fe3O4 causes a progressive lowering of the Curie temperature and the Curie temperatures of the materials are all lower than that of crystallite tin-doped magnetite. This striking debasing is due to the lessening of the grain size. This is the smallest size reported thus far for paramagnetic tin-doped magnetite particles. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Monomers of methacrylate with various pi -conjugated pendants were designed and prepared in our laboratory, The monomer with suitable end-group was successfully assembled with nano-scale inorganic particles to form an orderly-aligned structure that showed special optical properties, both absorption and emission band were much red-shifted compared with the monomer, A new type of organic/inorganic hybrid materials was obtained by in situ polymerization of the assembly, The hybrid materials could also show special optical properties as the assembly, This might open a new route to tune the emission color.

We report on high-frequency (300-700 GHz) ferromagnetic resonance (HF-FMR) measurements on cobalt superparamagnetic particles with strong uniaxial effective anisotropy. We derive the dynamical susceptibility of the system on the basis of an independent-grain model by using a rectangular approach. Numerical simulations give typical line shapes depending on the anisotropy, the gyromagnetic ratio, and the damping constant. HF-FMR experiments have been performed on two systems of ultrafine cobalt particles of different sizes with a mean number of atoms per particles of 150 +/- 20 and 310 +/- 20. In both systems, the magnetic anisotropy is found to be enhanced compared to the bulk value, and increases as the particle size decreases, in accordance with previous determinations from magnetization measurements. Although no size effect has been observed on the gyromagnetic ratio, the transverse relaxation time is two orders of magnitude smaller than the bulk value indicating strong damping effects, possibly originating from surface spin disorders.

We investigate high-field ferromagnetic resonance of superparamagnetic particles with uniaxial anisotropy, In this case, since the field is large enough to saturate the magnetization, the thermal orientational fluctuations of the magnetic moment of the particle are negligible. Thus, we derive the dynamic susceptibility of the system on the basis of an independent particle model. High-field ferromagnetic resonance has been performed on fine cobalt particles, The analysis of the spectra obtained at different frequencies allows us to estimate the effective magnetic anisotropy, the gyromagnetic ratio, and the transverse relaxation time. Multicolored optical active planes have been fabricated with magnetron sputter method coupled with selective masking technique. The plane is multilayer structured with Ag nanoparticles and TiO2 thin layer as the building blocks. It was found that the formed multilayer can be readily wavelength multiplexed by simply overlapping several nano-Ag/TiO2 layered structures, each of which may have different surface plasmon resonance wavelength. Unlike high order multiple resonances of large particles each of the multiplexing wavelengths in such a system is separately tunable. Importantly, it reveals that modification of the TiO2 layer thickness generates a fine tuning of the resonance wavelength.

Thermal tuning of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag nanoparticles on a thermochromic thin film of VO2 was studied experimentally. The tuning is strongly temperature dependent and thermally reversible. The LSPR wavelength lambda(SPR) shifts to the blue with increasing temperature from 30 to 80 degrees C, and shifts back to the red as temperature decreases. A smart tuning is achievable on condition that the temperature is controlled in a stepwise manner. The tunable wavelength range depends on the particle size or the mass thickness of the metal nanoparticle film. Further, the tunability was found to be enhanced significantly when a layer of TiO2 was introduced to overcoat the Ag nanoparticles, yielding a marked sensitivity factor Delta lambda(SPR)/Delta n, of as large as 480 nm per refractive index unit (n) at the semiconductor phase of VO2.

Over the past two decades, magnetoclimatological studies of loess-paleosol sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) have made outstanding achievements, which greatly promote the understanding of East Asian paleomonsoon evolution, inland aridification of Asia, and past global climate changes. Loess magnetic properties of the CLP have been well studied. In contrast, loess magnetic properties from outside the CLP in China have not been fully understood. We have little knowledge about the magnetic properties of loess in the Ili Basin, an intermontane depression of the Tianshan (or Tien Shan) Mountains. Here, we present the results of rock magnetic measurements of the Ili loess including mass magnetic susceptibility (χ) and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), high/low temperature dependence of susceptibility (TDS) and hysteresis, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) for mineral analysis. Based on the comparison with loess-paleosol sequences in the CLP (hereafter referred to as the Chinese loess), we discuss the possible magnetic susceptibility enhancement mechanism of the Ili loess. The results show that 1) the total magnetic mineral concentration of the Ili loess is far lower than that of the Chinese loess, though they have similar magnetic mineral compositions. The ferrimagnetic minerals in the Ili loess are magnetite and maghemite, and the antiferromagnetic mineral is hematite; XRD analysis also identifies the presence of ilmenite. The ratio of maghemite is lower in the Ili loess than in the Chinese loess, but the ratios of magnetite and hematite are higher in the Ili loess than in the Chinese loess. 2) The granularity of magnetic minerals in the Ili loess, dominated by pseudo-single domain (PSD) and multi-domain (MD) grains, is generally much coarser than that of the Chinese loess. Ultrafine pedogenically-produced magnetic grains have a very limited contribution to the susceptibility enhancement. Rather, PSD and MD particles of magnetite and maghemite are the main contributors to the enhancement of susceptibility in the Ili loess. 3) The susceptibility enhancement mechanism for the Ili loess is complicated and superimposes both a wind velocity/vigor model (Alaskan or Siberian model) and the in situ ultrafine grain pedogenic model; the former might play an important role in the Ili loess. 4) Magnetic susceptibility enhancements of the Ili loess are related not only to the eolian input of the source area, but also to the local climate, landform, and geological background. Therefore, great care should be taken when reconstructing paleoclimate using magnetic susceptibility data from the Ili loess.

Magnetic nanoparticles of nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) have been synthesized by co-precipitation route using stable ferric and nickel salts with sodium hydroxide as the precipitating agent and oleic acid as the surfactant. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analyses confirmed the formation of single-phase nickel ferrite nanoparticles in the range 8-28 nm depending upon the annealing temperature of the samples during the synthesis. The size of the particles (d) was observed to be increasing linearly with annealing temperature of the sample while the coercivity with particle size goes through a maximum, peaking at similar to 11 nm and then decreases for larger particles. Typical blocking effects were observed below similar to 225 K for all the prepared samples. The superparamagnetic blocking temperature (T-B) was found to be increasing with increasing particle size that has been attributed to the increased effective anisotropy energy of the nanoparticles. The saturation moment of all the samples was found much below the bulk value of nickel ferrite that has been attributed to the disordered surface spins or dead/inert layer in these nanoparticles. High spin states of Dy-144 have been studied through in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy by using the reaction Mo-92(Fe-56,2p2n). It has been found that the continuation of the ground-state band forks into three Delta I=2 bands above the 8(+) state. This forking has been attributed to the alignments of pi h(11/2)(2) or nu h(11/2)(-2) configurations with the help of the systematics in neighboring nuclei. Additionally a negative-parity sideband of Delta I=2 cascades has been observed to start from the 5((-)) state and continue to a dipole band above the (13(-)) state through another negative-parity sideband of Delta I=2 cascades in between. These structures have been discussed from the viewpoint of a competition between "Magnetic Rotation" and "Anti-magnetic Rotation" based on a classical particles-plus-rotor model.

Magnetic nanoparticles of Ni-doped cobalt ferrite [Co1-xNixFe2O4(0 <= x <= 1)] synthesized by coprecipitation route have been studied as a function of doping concentration (x) and particle size. The size of the particles as determined by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analyses was found in the range 12-48 nm. The coercivity (H-C) and saturation magnetization (M-S) showed a decreasing behavior with increasing Ni concentration. M-S of all the samples annealed at 600 degrees C lies in the range 65.8-13.7 emu/gm. Field-cooled (FC) studies of the samples showed horizontal shift (exchange bias) and vertical shift in the magnetization loop. Strong decrease in exchange bias (H-b) and vertical shift (delta M) was found for low Ni concentrations while negligible decrease was found at higher concentrations. The presence of exchange bias in the low Ni-concentration region has been explained with reference to the interface spins interaction between a surface region (with structural and spin disorder) and a ferrimagnetic core region. M(T) graphs of the samples showed a decreasing trend of blocking temperature (T-b) with increasing Ni concentration. The decrease of T-b with increasing Ni concentration has been attributed to the lower anisotropy energy of Ni+2 ions as compared to Co+2 that increases the probability of the jump across the anisotropy barrier which in turn decreases the blocking temperature of the system.

Lanthanide fluoride LnF(3) (Ln = La to Lu) nano-/microcrystals with multiform crystal structures (hexagonal and orthorhombic) and morphologies (separated elongated nanoparticles, aggregated nanoparticles, polyhedral microcrystals) were successfully synthesized by a facile, effective, and environmentally friendly hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectra were used to characterize the samples. The experimental results indicated that the use of NaBF4 is indispensable for obtaining LnF(3) crystal structures.

A green one-step approach has been developed for the synthesis of amino-functionalized magnetite nanoparticles. The synthesis was accomplished by simply mixing FeCl2 with arginine under ambient conditions. It was found that the Fe2+/arginine molar ratio, reaction duration and temperature greatly influence the size, morphology and composition of magnetic nanoparticles. The arginine-stabilized magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques.

Hydroxyapatite (Ca-5(PO4)(3)OH) nano- and microcrystals with multiform morphologies (separated nanowires, nanorods, microspheres, microflowers, and microsheets) have been successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, kinetic decay, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were used to characterize the samples. The experimental results indicate that the obtained Ca-5(PO4)(3)OH samples show an intense and bright blue emission under long-wavelength UV light excitation. This blue emission might result from the CO2 center dot- radical impurities in the crystal lattice.
