Fabrication of ultrathin polymer composite films with low dielectric constants has been demonstrated. Octa( aminophenyl) silsesquioxane (OAPS) was synthesized and assembled with poly( acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly( styrene sulfonate) (PSS) via a layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly technique to yield nanoporous ultrathin films. The OAPS was soluble in water at pH 3 or lower, and suitable pH conditions for the OAPS/PAA and OAPS/PSS assemblies were determined. The multilayer formation process was studied by contact angle analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, quartz crystal microgravimetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and ellipsometry. The multilayer growth was found to be steady and uniform, and the analysis of the film surface revealed a rough topography due to OAPS aggregates. The incorporation of porous OAPS molecules into the thin films significantly lowered their dielectric constants. The OAPS/PAA multilayer thin film thus prepared exhibited a dielectric constant of 2.06 compared to 2.58 for pure PAA film. The OAPS/PAA multilayer film was heated to effect cross-linking between the OAPS and the PAA layers, and the transformation was verified by reflection-absorption Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Eighteen-nanometer gold and 3.5-nm silver colloidal particles closely packed by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to form its positively charged shell. The DNA network was formed on a mica Substrate firstly. Later, CTAB-capped gold or silver colloidal solutions were cast onto DNA network surface. It was found that the gold or silver nanoparticles metallized networks were formed owing to the electrostatic-driven template assembling of positive charge of CTAB-capped gold and silver particles on the negatively charged phosphate groups of DNA Molecules by the characterizations of AFM, XPS and UV-vis. This method may provide a novel and simple way to studying nanoparticles assembly conjugating DNA molecules and offer some potential promising applications in nanocatalysis, nanoelectronics, and nanosensor on the basis of the fabricated metal nanoparticles network.

Prussian blue (PB) was modified onto surface of SiO2 nanoparticles and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by electrostatic assembled method. SiO2 nanoparticles and MWNTs firstly modified by polyelectrolyte exhibited positive charges and negative charged PB could be assembled onto them. UV-vs spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and electrochemical methods were used to characterize these composite nanomaterials. TEM and FE-SEM images showed that PB was easily assembled onto polyelectrolyte modified SiO2 nanoparticles and MWNTs. Moreover, PB on the surface of nanomaterials was stable and still kept its intrinsic electrochemical properties and high electrocatalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide.

In this paper, a method for highly ordered assembly of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanoparticles (NPs) by DNA templates was reported. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-capped Cu2O NPs were adsorbed onto well-aligned lambda-DNA chains to form necklace-like one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures. UV-vis, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the nanostructure. The Cu2O nanostructures fabricated with the method are both highly ordered and quite straight.

For the 4f(N-1)5d configuration the Coulomb interaction between f and d electrons was parameterized by F-k(fd) with K = 2, 4, and G(K)(fd) with K = 1, 3, 5. The spin-orbit interaction for 4f and 5d electrons can be parameterized by xi (f) and xi (d) respectively, which can be compounded into one lambda : lambda = axi (f) + bxi (d), where a and b are the corresponding coefficients. The energy expressions of H-e(fd) of the chief low-energy levels of 4f(N-) (1)5d configuration for heavy lanthanide ions were calculated and the corresponding spin-orbit parameters lambda were also given in LS coupling, which are profitable in analyzing the spectra of the heavy lanthanide ions.

In LS coupling, the energy expressions of H-e(fd) of the chief low-energy levels of 4f(N-15)d (n < 9) configuration ions are calculated. H-e(fd) can be parameterized with F-K (k=2,4) and G(K)(k=1,3,5). f(k) and g(k), which are coefficients, times the corresponding parameter FK and GK leads to the energy expressions of H-e(fd).

The assembly of alternating DNA and positively charged poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) multilayer films by electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption has been studied. The real-time surface plasmon resonance (BIAcore) technique was used to characterize and monitor the formation of multilayer films in solution in real time continuously. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and UV-vis absorbance measurements were also used to study the film assembly, and linear film growth was observed. All the results indicate that the uniform multilayer can be obtained on the poly(ethylenimine)- (PEI-) coated substrate surface. The kinetics of the adsorption of DNA on PDDA surface was also studied by the real-time BIAcore technique; the observed rate constant was calculated using a Langmuir model (k(obs) = (1.28 +/- 0.08) x 10(-2) s(-1).

The morphology of films of isotactic polypropylene poly (3-dodecylthiophene) and iPP/P3DDT blend formed in electrostatic fields has been investigated by using scanning electron microscope. The experiment results show that the micro-crystal morphology of polymer films was strongly dependent on electrostatic fields. It was found that the effect of the electrostatic field led to the formation of dendrite crystals aligned in the field direction, and some branches of P3DDT ruptured. However, the micro-crystals in these films grew into spherulites without electrostatic field, and have no crystal orientation.

The micro-crystal morphology of the films of isotactic polypropylene (iPP), poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) and iPP/P3DDT blend grown in different electrostatic environments has been investigated by using scanning electron microscope. The experimental results show that the micro-crystal morphology of polymer films was strongly dependent on electrostatic field. It was found that the micro-crystal morphology of the films of iPP, P3DDT and iPP/P3DDT blend grown in the electrostatic field was in the form of dendrite crystals, in which main stems were aligned in the field direction, and some branches of P3DDT were ruptured. However, the micro-crystals of the films of iPP, P3DDT and iPP/P3DDT blend have no crystal orientation in the absence of electrostatic field. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The elucidation of key influence factors for electrostatic adsorption is very important to control protein nonspecific adsorption on modified surfaces. In this study, real-time surface plasmon resonance technique is used to characterize the electrostatic adsorption of two proteins (mouse IgG and protein A) on carboxymethyldextran-modified surface. The results show that protein solution pH and ionic strength are key influence factors for efficient electrostatic adsorption. The influence of protein, solution pH on the amount of electrostatic adsorption depends on the type of the charge and the charge density of both protein and modified matrix on the surface. The electrostatic adsorption process involves a competition between the positively charged protein and other positively charged species in the buffer solution. A decrease of ionic strength leads to an increasing electrostatic adsorption. The kinetic adsorption constants of protein A at different pH values were also calculated and compared.

An alignment study of a liquid crystalline copolyether TPP-7/11(5/5) thin films has been carried out in a 10 kV . cm(-1) electrostatic field parallel to the thin film surface normal. This copolyether possesses a negative dielectric anisotropy. The chain molecules are homogeneously aligned in the electric field and they form two-dimensionally ordered lamellae in a tilted columnar phase when the samples were cooled to room temperature. It is observed that the chain molecules are splayed to form bent lamellae and the chain direction is perpendicular to the tangential direction of the lamellar surfaces. These lamellae thus become replicas of the chain orientation, Due to the flexoelectric effect and density fluctuation on the thin film free surface, disclinations having topological strength s = 1, c = pi /4 and defect walls form. These s = 1 disclinations possesses both left- and right-handednesses. Discussion of the defect formations have been attempted.
