An FFT-based two-step phase-shifting (TPS) algorithm is described in detail and implemented by use of experimental interferograms. This algorithm has been proposed to solve the TPS problem with random phase shift except pi. By comparison with the visibility-function-based TPS algorithm, it proves that the FFT-based algorithm has obvious advantages in phase extracting. Meanwhile, we present a pi-phase-shift supplement to the TPS algorithm, which combines the two interferograms and demodulates the phase map by locating the extrema of the combined fringes after removing the respective backgrounds. So combining this method and FFT-based one, one could really implement the TPS with random phase shift. Whereafter, we systematically compare the TPS with single-interferogram analysis algorithm and conventional three-step phase-shifting one. The results demonstrate that the FFT-based TPS algorithm has a satisfactory accuracy. At last, based on the polarizing interferometry, a schematic setup of two-channel TPS interferometer with random phase shift is suggested to implement the simultaneous collection of interferograms. Estimation of the far-field centre is carried out in beam auto-alignment. In this paper, the features of the far-field of a square beam are presented. Based on these features, a phase-only matched filter is designed, and the algorithm of centre estimation is developed. Using the simulated images with different kinds of noise and the 40 test images that are taken in sequence, the accuracy of this algorithm is estimated. Results show that the error is no more than one pixel for simulated noise images with a 99% probability, and the stability is restricted within one pixel for test images. Using the improved algorithm, the consumed time is reduced to 0.049 s.

Redescription of Balantidium ctenopharyngodoni "Chen (Acta Hydrobiol Sin 1:123-164, 1955)", collected from the hindgut of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), especially the segment of 6-10 cm upstream from the anus, from Honghu Lake, Hubei Province, central China in November 2005, is presented in this paper to complete Chen's description at both light and scanning electron microscopic levels. Some revisions were done: the vestibulum is fairly symmetrical, with compactly arranged cilia rather than assembled membrane bordering on the left vestibular side; four contractile vacuoles actually exist in the latter body, three of which surround the posterior portion of the macronucleus, whereas the fourth lies antero-left to it. Somatic monokinetids were compared among the species of genus Balantidium. The cysts were described, and possible infection routes of B. ctenopharyngodoni were also discussed.

During the parasite fauna investigation within 2004 and 2005, the freshwater fish trypanosomes were isolated from the blood of dark sleeper (Odontobutis obscura Temminck and Schlegel) and snakehead fish (Ophiocephalus argus Cantor) from Niushan Lake, Hubei Province, China. Blood trypomastigotes were used for light microscopy investigations. The detailed descriptions of three morphological groups of the genus Trypanosoma: Trypanosoma sp. I and Trypanosoma sp. II found in blood of O. obscura, and Trypanosoma sp. III found in blood of O. argus were provided. Morphological features and host species show Trypanosoma sp. III belong to Trypanosoma ophiocephali Chen 1964, an incompletely described species. Infection with trypanosomes of O. obscura was recorded for the first time. According to the size and appearance, the trypanosomes in O. obscura were also tentatively identified as T. ophiocephali Chen 1964.

Redescription of Myxobolus pyramidis Chen, 1958, from gill lamellae of allogynogenetic gibel carp, Carassius auratus gibelio (Bloch), is presented in this paper to complete Chen's description. The diagnostic characters of the myxosporidia are: ovoid round, greyish-white polysporous plasmodia, averaging (159 +/- 21)x(72 +/- 6.5) mu m in size; spore pyriform in front view with smooth surface and symmetrical valves, convex-shaped in sutural view with straight and thick sutural line, averaging (10.5 +/- 1.1)x(10.3 +/- 0.9)x(6.1 +/- 0.2) mu m in size; two equal pyriform polar capsules averaging (5.5 +/- 0.7)x(3.5 +/- 0.2) mu m in size with distinct intercapsular process and polar filament wounded in five to six coils. The histological effects of the pathogen were observed by light microscopy, and the parasite-host relationship was discussed.

The exact calculation of mode quality factor Q is a key problem in the design of high-Q photonic crystal nanocavity. On the basis of further investigation on conventional Pade approximation, FDM and DFT, Pade approximation with Baker's algorithm is enhanced through introducing multiple frequency search and parabola interpolation. Though Pade approximation is a nonlinear signal processing method and only short time sequence is needed, we find the different length of sequence requirements for 2D and 3D FDTD, which is very important to obtain convergent and accurate results. By using the modified Pade approximation method and 3D FDTD, the 2D slab photonic crystal nanocavity is analyzed and high-Q multimode can be solved quickly instead of large range high-resolution scanning. Monitor position has also been investigated. These results are very helpful to the design of photonic crystal nanocavity devices. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
