In-situ Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectra of native and thermally denatured calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) adsorbed and/or oxidized at a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface are reported. The adsorption of native DNA occurs throughout the potential range (-0.2 similar to 1.3 V) studied, and the adsorbing state of DNA at electrode surface is changed from through the C=O band of bases and pyrimidine rings to through the C=O of cytosine and imidazole rings while the potential shifts negatively from 1.3 V to -0.2 V. An in-situ FTIR spectrum of native CT DNA adsorbed at GC electrode surface is similar to that of the dissolved DNA, indicating that the structure of CT DNA is not distorted while it is adsorbed at the GC electrode surface. In the potential range of -0.2 similar to 1.30 V, the temperature-denatured CT DNA is adsorbed at the electrode surface first, then undergoes electrochemical oxidation reaction and following that, diffuses away from the electrode surface. Stable lipid film was made by casting lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon electrode. This model of a biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by dopamine. After this electrode had been immersed in dopamine solution for 10 h, it was found that some dopamine had been incorporated in the film. The cyclic voltammogram was obtained for the oxidation of 2.0 X 10(-3) mol 1(-1) NADH with dopamine incorporated in the films. All electrochemical experiments were performed in 0.005 mol 1(-1) phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 0.1 mol 1(-1) NaCl without oxygen. The oxidation current increased gradually with successive sweeps and reached steady state. It was a different phenomenon from previous results. The anodic overpotential was reduced by about 130 mV compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. The diffusion coefficient for 2.0 X 10(-3) mol 1(-1) NADH was 6.7 X 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1). (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A chemically modified electrode (CME) constructed by adsorption of aquocobalamin (VB12a) onto a glassy carbon electrode surface was demonstrated to catalyze the electro-oxidation of cysteine, a sulfhydryl-containing compound. The sulfhydryl oxidation occured at 0.54-0.88 V vs. Ag/AgCl depending on pH value (3.0-10.0). The electrocatalytic behavior of cysteine is elucidated with respect to solution pH, operating potential and other variables as well as the CME preparation conditions. When used as the sensing electrode in flow injection amperometric detection, the CME permitted detection of the compound at 0.8 V. The detection limit was 1.7 pmol. The linear response range went up to 1.16 nmol. The stability of the CME was shown by RSD (4.2%) over 10 repeated injections.

A modified method for dispersing platinum particles on a glassy carbon (GC) electrode was investigated. The ultramicro Pt particle-modified electrode obtained exhibited high catalytic stability and activity towards the oxidation of some halide ions (Br-, I-) and inorganic sulfur species (S2O32-, SO32- and SCN-). These anions were separated and detected by using ion chromatography and electrochemical detection via this novel dispersed Pt particles-GC working electrode. The detection limits were 20 ng/ml for Br-, 1.0 ng/ml for I-, 10 ng/ml for SO32- and 4.0 ng/ml for SCN-. This method was employed for the analysis of industrial and environmental waste waters.

Electrocatalytic oxidation of sulfhydryl compounds was effective on a copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) film glassy carbon electrode, at a significantly reduced overpotential (0.55 to 0.65 V) and for a broader pH range (2.0 to 7.0). The electrocatalysis was

The anodic oxidation kinetics of hydrazine on glassy carbon electrodes in acetonitrile were examined by cyclic voltammetry, a rotating ring-disc electrode technique and chronoamperometry. The experimental results of the rotating ring-disc electrode prove that hydrazine is oxidized to HN=NH, which cannot be oxidized further in acetonitrile. Hydrazine molecules are adsorbed on the electrode surface. One-third of the adsorbed hydrazine molecules are oxidized to HN=NH and the other two thirds act as proton acceptors. A possible mechanism of hydrazine oxidation is proposed.

The anodic oxidation kinetics of hydrazine (N2H4) on glassy carbon (GC) electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry, rotating disk and ring-disc electrode techniques. The possible mechanisms of N2H4 oxidation in both aqueous and nonaqueous solutions are proposed.

A vitamin B-12 chemically modified electrode (CME) was constructed by adsorption of vitamin B-12 onto a glassy carbon surface. The electrode catalyzes the electrooxidation of hydrazine compounds over a wide pH range. The electrocatalytic behavior of hydrazines is elucidated with respect to the CME preparation conditions, solution pH, operating potential, mobile phase flow rate, and other variables. When applied to liquid chromatographic detection of the analytes, the vitamin B-12 CME yielded a linear response range over 2 orders of magnitude, and detection limits at the picomole level. The vitamin B-12 CME offers acceptable catalytic stability in both batch and flow systems.

A conducting polyaniline (PAn) film modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode was prepared by electrochemical polymerization. The electrochemical behavior of ascorbic acid (AH(2)) in aqueous solution at this PAn modified electrode was studied in detail. The experimental results show that PAn film modified electrode has good electrocatalytic activity on the oxidation of ascorbic acid in aqueous solution over a wide range of pH value, among which pH 4 is the optimum condition. The oxidation process of ascorbic acid at PAn film electrode can be regarded as an EC catalytic mechanism. The kinetic process of the catalytic reaction was investigated by rotating disk electrode (RDE) coated with PAn films. The rate constant of the catalytic reaction was evaluated. The catalytic peak currents are proportional to the concentrations tions of ascorbic acid in the range of 5 x 10(-2)-1 x 10(-6) mol . L-1. The PAn film elec trodes give very stable responce for the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The present investigation shows the posibility of using PAn film modified electrode for the determination of ascorbic acid.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of hydrazine (N2H4) on a glassy carbon electrode (GC) modified by monolayer and polymer films of cobalt protoporphyrin dimethyl ester (CoPP) has been studied. Both the monolayer and polymer films of CoPP are very active to the anodic oxidation of N2H4. The activity of CoPP for the anodic oxidation of N2H4 is dependent on the pH of the solution, and the thickness of polymerized CoPP film. The oxidation kinetics were examined by methods of cyclic voltammetry, rotating disc electrodes and steady-state polarization measurement.

The deposition of carbon on catalysts during the partial oxidation of methane to syngas has been investigated in a fluidized bed. It was found that the relative rate of carbon deposition follows the order NiP > >d > Pt, Rh. Although the rate of carbon deposition in the fluidized bed was much lower than that in the fixed bed, carbon deposition could still be detected in the fluidized bed if a CH4/O-2 ratio in greater than 2.3 was used.
