Laser tunable Toraldo superresolution with a uniform nonlinear pupil filter

We demonstrate that it is possible to reduce the focal spot size by inserting a uniform nonlinear thin film at the aperture of a focusing lens. The reduction of spot size is tunable by adjusting the incoming laser power. In comparison with the original diffraction spot, the transverse spot size can be reduced 0.65 times. The nonlinear thin film acts effectively as a Toraldo filter, and the phase and amplitude modulation stems from the laser-induced variances in the transmission of the thin film. The proposed technique removes the need of fabricating annular pupil filters. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Self-adaptive optical systems for long-distance flying optics

The focusing characteristics of long-distance flying optics were studied systemically for TEMmn Gaussian beams. The results show that the ABCD law of parameter q can be extended to Gaussian modes of any order when waist radius w in the imaginary part of parameter q is replaced by Rayleigh range Z(R) of a certain resonator in the equation. The difference between the real focal length and the geometric focal length, defined as Delta f, was calculated for laser applications. A novel self-adaptive optical system was demonstrated for precisely controlling the focusing characteristics of long-distance flying optics, Theoretical analyses and experimental results were consistent. 飞行光学聚焦特性控制仪的研制

研究了长距离飞行光学（flying optics）高斯光束聚焦特性，理论研究表明：将某一特定谐振腔的瑞利长度ZR取代q参量虚部的光斑尺寸w时，q参量的ABCD定律可以从基模推广到高阶模或几个模的叠加，并推导出飞行光学实际焦距与几何焦距之差Δf的计算公式。为了精确控制飞行光学聚焦特性，研制了一套自适应飞行光学聚焦特性控制仪，实验和理论比较吻合。

Diffraction at 8-keV x-rays of Bragg-Fresnel optics

The basic elements of Bragg-Fresnel multilayer optics are multilayer gratings. In this paper, the fabrication process for the simplest Bragg-Fresnel multilayer optics is given; the diffraction measurements at 8-keV x rays of multilayer gratings are presented; and the measurement results in the diffraction spectrum are analyzed and discussed in detail. Degenerate four-wave mixing based all-optical wavelength conversion in a semiconductor optical amplifier and highly-nonlinear photonic crystal fiber parametric loop mirror

The idler is separated from the co-propagating pump in a degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) with a symmetrical parametric loop mirror (PALM), which is composed of two identical SOAs and a 70 m highly-nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (HN-PCF). The signal and pump are coupled into the symmetrical PALM from different ports, respectively. After the DFWM based wavelength conversion (WC) in the clockwise and anticlockwise, the idler exits from the signal port, while the pump outputs from its input port. Therefore, the pump is effectively suppressed in the idler channel without a high-speed tunable filter. Contrast to a traditional PALM, the DFWM based conversion efficiency is increased greatly, and the functions of the amplification and the WC are integrated in the smart SOA and HN-PCF PALM. Holographic fabricated photonic-crystal distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser with near-diffraction-limited beam quality

We demonstrate the fabrication and characterization of photonic-crystal distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser emitting at 4.7 mu m. The tilted rectangular-lattice PCDFB structure was defined using a multi-exposure of two-beam holographic lithography. The devices exhibit the near-diffraction-limited beam emission with the full width at half maximum of the far-field divergence angles about 4.5 degrees and 2.5 degrees for stripe widths of 55 mu m and 95 mu m, respectively. Single-mode emission with a side mode suppression ratio of approximate to 20 dB is achieved in the temperature range (80-210 K). The single-facet output power is above 1 W for a 95 mu m x 2.5 mm laser bar at 85 K in pulsed operation. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Measurement of the optical transmission modes and losses of the poled guest-host polymer NAEC/PEK-c planar waveguides

The polyetherketone (PEK-c) guest-host polymer planar waveguides doped with (4'-nitro)-3-azo-9-ethyl-carbazole (NAEC) were prepared. The waveguide films were poled by corona-onset poling at elevated temperature (COPET), and the corona poling setup includes a grid voltage making the surface-charge distribution uniform. By using the prism-in coupling method, the dark-line spectrum given by the reflected intensity versus the angle of incidence have been obtained, and the optical transmission losses of mth modes have been measured for the poled polymer waveguides at lambda = 632.8 nm. The measurement result showed that the optical loss of the fundamental mode is less than 0.7 dB cm(-1) for the TE polarization. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
