Novel optically active aromatic poly(amide-imide)s (PAIs) containing 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl units in the main chain were prepared by polycondensation reactions of newly synthesized dianhydride, 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxylzenzamido)-1,1'-binaphthyl dianhydride[(S)-BN-DADA and (+/-)-BNDADA], with diamines, The properties of the resulted PAIs were fully characterized by a combination of investigations on inherent viscosity, thermal properties(DSC and TGA), specific rotation, CD and UV-Vis absorbance. These PAIs showed good solubilities, thermal properties and optical stabilities. Interesting UV-Vis absorption behavior of films casted from these PAIs was observed and analyzed.

A tyrosinase-based amperometric biosensor using a self-gelatinizable graft copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine (PVA-g-PVP) as an immobilization matrix was constructed. The 4-vinylpyridine component of PVA-g-PVP enhances the adherence to a glassy carbon electrode surface. The content of 4-vinylpyridine in this immobilization matrix plays a key role in retaining the activity of tyrosinase. A simple, milder method was adopted by simply syringing the copolymer-tyrosinase aqueous solution on to the electrode surface and allowing water to evaporate at 4 degrees C in a refrigerator. Several parameters, including copolymer composition; pH, applied potential and enzyme membrane composition, ware optimized. The enzyme membrane composition can be varied to obtain higher sensitivity or a wider linear detection range. The biosensor was used for the determination of phenol, p-cresol and catechol. The biosensor exhibited excellent reproducibility, stability and sensitive response and can be used in flow injection analysis. The biosensor showed an extended linear range in hydrophilic organic solvents and it can be used in monitoring organic reaction processes. The analytical performance demonstrated this immobilization matrix is suitable for the immobilization of tyrosinase.

A new crystal modification induced by strain and denoted as form II exists alongside the dominant form I structure in the uniaxially oriented poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and the related polymers. The crystal structure of form II for PEEK is also found to possess a two-chain orthorhombic packing with unit cell parameters of a equal to 0.475 nm, b equal to 1.060 nm, and c equal to 1.086 nm. More extended and flattened chain conformation of form II relative to that of form I is expected to account for an 8% increase in c-axis dimension, which is attributed to the extensional deformation fixed in situ through strain-induced crystallization during uniaxial drawing. Annealing experiments suggest that form II is thermodynamically metastable and can be transformed into more stable form I by chain relaxation and reorganization at elevated temperature without external tension. This strain-induced polymorphism exists universally in the poly(aryl ether ketone) family. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Using a graft modification method, a comblike polymer host (CBPE550) was synthesized by reacting monomethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGMA) with ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer (EMAC) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. The product was characterized by IR and elementary analysis. Result showed that the product was amorphous and semi-ester product is accord with reaction equation. There were two peaks in the plot of the ionic conductivity against Li salt concentration. The plot of log a against 1/(T - T-0) shows a dual VTF behavior when using the glass transition temperature of PEO of side chain as T beta. The comblike polymer is a white rubbery solid. It can be well-dissolved in acetone. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A novel synthetic route to cyclic PEEK precursors is described. These new cyclic oligomers have been prepared from hydroquinone and N-phenyl(4,4'-difluorodiphenyl) ketimine. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature.

The effect of adding diblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) (P(S-b-4VPy), to immiscible blends of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) on the morphology, thermal transition, crystalline structure, and rheological and mechanical properties of the blends has been investigated. The diblock copolymer was synthesized by sequential anionic copolymerization and was melt-blended with sPS and TPU. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the added block copolymer reduced the domain size of the dispersed phase in the blends. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) revealed that the extent of compatibility between sPS and TPU affected the crystallization of the sPS in the blends. Tensile strength and elongation at break increased, while the dynamic modulus and complex viscosity decreased with the amount of P(S-b-4VPy) in the blend. The compatibilizing effect of the diblock copolymer is the result of its location at the interface between the sPS and the TPU phases and penetration of the blocks into the: corresponding phases, i.e. the polystyrene block enters the noncrystalline regions of the sPS, and the poly(4-vinylpyridine) block interacts with TPU through intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Nonisothermal crystallization and melting behavior of poly(P-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)-poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) blends from the melt were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry using various cooling rates. The results show that crystallization of PHB from the melt in the PHB-PVAc blends depends greatly upon cooling rates and blend compositions. For a given composition, the crystallization process begins at higher temperatures when slower scanning rates are used. At a given cooling rate, the presence of PVAc reduces the overall PHB crystallization rate. The Avrami analysis modified by Jeziorny and a new method were used to describe the nonisothermal crystallization process of PHB-PVAc blends very well. The double-melting phenomenon is found to be caused by crystallization during heating in DSC. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k(s)) of dimethylferrocene (DMFc) was estimated using cyclic voltammetric peak potential separations taken typically in a mixed diffusion geometry regime in a polyelectrolyte, and the diffusion coefficient (D) of DMFc was obtained using a steady-state voltammogram. The heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant and diffusion coefficient are both smaller by about 100-fold in the polymeric solvent than in the monomeric solvent. The results are in agreement with the difference of longitudinal dielectric relaxation time (tau(L)) in the two kinds of solvents, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and CH3CN, indicating that k(s) varies inversely with tau(L); k(s), is proportional to D of DMFc. Both D and k(s) of DMFc in PEG containing different supporting electrolytes and at different temperatures have been estimated. These results show that D and k(s) of DMFc increase with increasing temperature in the polyelectrolyte, whereas they vary only slightly with changing the supporting electrolyte.

Blend films of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(DL-lactide) (PDLLA) with 0.5 weight fraction of PCL were prepared by means of solution casting and their degradation behavior was studied in phosphate buffer solution containing Pseudomonas (PS) lipase. Enzymatic degradation of the blend films occurred continuously within the first 6 days and finally stopped when the film weight loss reached 50%, showing that only PCL in the blends degraded under the action of PS lipase in the buffer solution. These results indicate the selectivity of PS lipase on the promotion of degradation for PCL and PDLLA. The thermal properties and morphology of the blend films were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The morphology resulting from aggregate structures of PCL in the blends was destroyed in the enzymatic degradation process, as observed by SEM. These results confirm again the enzymatic degradation of PCL in the blends in the presence of PS lipase. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A successful micronization of water-insoluble poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) into narrowly distributed nanoparticles stable in water has not only enabled us to study the enzymatic biodegradation of PCL in water at 25 degrees C by a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering (LLS), but also to shorten the biodegradation time by a factor of more than 10(3) compared with using a thin PCL film, i.e. a 1 week conventional experiment becomes a 4 min one. The time-average scattering intensity decreased linearly. It was interesting to find that the decrease of the scattering intensity was not accompanied by a decrease of the average size of the PCL nanoparticles, indicating that the enzyme, Lipase Pseudomonas (PS), ''eats'' the PCL nanoparticles one-by-one, so that the biodegradation rate is determined mainly by the: enzyme concentration. Moreover, we found that using anionic sodium lauryl sulphate instead of cationic hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as surfactant in the micronization can prevent the biodegradation, suggesting that the biodegradation involves two essential steps: the adsorption of slightly negatively charged Lipase PS onto the PCL nanoparticles and the interaction between Lipase PS and PCL. The compatibilizing effect and mechanism of poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) diblock copolymer, P(S-b-4VPy), on the immiscible blend of polystyrene (PS)/zinc salt of sulphonated polystyrene (Zn-SPS) were studied. SEM results show that the domains of the dispersed phase in the blend become finer. DSC experiments reveal that the difference between the two T-g's corresponding to the phases in the blends becomes larger on addition of P(S-b-4VPy), mainly resulting from dissolving of the poly(4-vinylpyridine (P4VPy) block in the Zn-SPS phase. FTIR analysis shows that compatibility of P4VPy and Zn-SPS arises from the stoichiometric coordination of the zinc ions of Zn-SPS and pyridine nitrogens of P4VPy. SAXS analysis indicates the effect of the P(S-b-4VPy) content on the structure of the compatibilized blends. When the content of the block copolymer is lower than 4.1 wt%, the number of ion pairs in an aggregate in the Zn-SPS becomes smaller, and aggregates in ionomer in the blend become less organized with increasing P(S-b-4VPy). When the P(S-b-4VPy) content in the blend is up to 7.4 wt%, a fraction of P(S-b-4VPy) form a separate domain in the blend. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two closely series of poly(ester imide)s had been synthesized by solution polycondensation of p-phenylenebis(trimellitate) dianhydride with aliphatic diamines. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) traces of the most poly(ester imide)s exhibited two endotherms representing the solid state to anisotropic phase transition (T-m1) and the anisotropic to isotropic melt transition (T-m2), respectively. Observation under polarizing microscope and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements suggested that the anisotropic phase formed above the melting paints (T-m1) had a smectic character. The thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) revealed that the thermal stabilities of the poly(ester imide)s were up to 350 degrees C. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The overall isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) blends were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The Avrami analysis indicates that the addition of PVAc into PHB results in the decrease in the overall crystallization rate of the PHB phase, but does not affect PHB's nucleation mechanism and geometry of crystal growth. The activation energy of the overall process of crystallization increases with the increasing PVAc content in the blends. The phenomenon of multiple melting endotherms is observed, which is caused by melting and recrystallization during the DSC heating run. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The compatibilization effect of poly(styrene-b-2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) diblock copolymer, P(S-b-EOx), on immiscible blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (EAA) is examined in terms of phase structure and thermal, rheological and mechanical properties, and its compatibilizing mechanism is investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The block copolymer, synthesized by a mechanism transformation copolymerization, is used in solution blending of PPO/EAA. Scanning electron micrographs show that the blends exhibit a more regular and finer dispersion on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). Thermal analysis indicates that the grass transition of PPO and the lower endothermic peal; of EAA components become closer on adding P(S-b-EOx), and the added diblock copolymer is mainly located at the interface between the PPO and EAA phases. The interfacial tension estimated by theological measurement is significantly reduced on addition of a small amount of P(S-b-EOx). The tensile strength and elongation at break increase with the addition of the diblock copolymer for PPO-rich blends, whereas the tensile strength increases but the elongation at break decreases for EAA-rich blends. This effect is interpreted in terms of interfacial activity and the reinforcing effect of the diblock copolymer, and it is concluded that the diblock copolymer plays a role as an effective compatibilizer for PPO/EAA blends. The specific interaction between EAA and polar parts of P(S-b-EOx) is mainly hydrogen bonding. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

After isothermal crystallization of the amorphous poly(ether ether ketone), double endothermic behaviour can be found through differential scanning calorimetry experiments. During the heating scan of semicrystalline PEEK, a metastable melt, which comes from the melt of the thinner lamellar crystal populations, can be obtained between these two endotherms. The metastable melt can recrystallize immediately just above the lower melting temperature and form slightly thicker lamellae than the original ones. The thickness and the perfection depend upon the crystallization time and the crystallization temperature. By comparing the TEM morphological observations of the samples before and after partial melting, it can be shown that lamellar crystals, having different thermodynamic stability, form during isothermal crystallization. After partial melting, only the type of lamellar crystal exhibiting the higher thermodynamic stability remains. Wide angle X-ray diffraction measurements shows a slightly change in the crystallinity of the samples before and after the partial melting. Small angle X-ray scattering results exhibit a change in the long period of the lamellar crystals before and after the partial melting process. The crystallization kinetics of the metastable melt can be determined by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic analysis showed that the isothermal crystallization of the metastable PEEK melt proceeds with an Avrami exponent of n = 1.0 similar to 1.4, reflecting that probably one-dimensional or an irregular line growth of the crystal occurred between the existing main lamellae with heterogeneous nucleation.
