A new method for the fabrication of an integrated microelectrode for electrochemical detection (ECD) on an electrophoresis microchip is described. The pattern of the microelectrode was directly made on the surface of a microscope slide through an electroless deposition procedure. The surface of the slide was first selectively coated with a thin layer of sodium silicate through a micromolding in capillary technique provided by a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microchannel; this left a rough patterned area for the anchoring of catalytic particles. A metal layer was deposited on the pattern guided by these catalytic particles and was used as the working electrode. Factors influencing the fabrication procedure were discussed. The whole chip was built by reversibly sealing the slide to another PDMS layer with electrophoresis microchannels at room temperature. This approach eliminates the need of clean room facilities and expensive apparatus such as for vacuum deposition or sputtering and makes it possible to produce patterned electrodes suitable for ECD on microchip under ordinary chemistry laboratory conditions. Also once the micropattern is ready, it allows the researchers to rebuild the electrode in a short period of time when an electrode failure occurs. Copper and gold microelectrodes were fabricated by this technique. Glucose, dopamine, and catechol as model analytes were tested.

Eu(III)-octa-4-(tetrahydrofurfuroxy) phthalocyanine (EuPc2') was synthesied and characterized by elementary analysis, IR, MS, UV-vis spectra. EuPc2' has good film-forming ability from determination of isotherm of pi-A. The complex LB film was formed by depositing of EuPc2' on a quartz slide with the LB techniques of the Z-type, The luminescent properties of pure and doped LS films were determined. The results showed that pure films have good luminescent properties, the thicker the LB films, the stronger the fluorescent intensity. The films doped with o-phenanthroline (abbreviated as phen) made the relative intensity of fluorescent emission behavior enhance in comparison to that of pure LB film, But the amount of phen may be not too much. Our results showed that EuPc2':phen = 1: 10 (molar ratio) has the best fluorescent behavior. The electronic spectroscopic characterization of the LB films is also given.

Sol-gel derived luminescent thin films doped with rare earth (RE) complexes were prepared using an in-situ synthesis method with a two-step hydrolysis process and the luminescence spectra were measured. Fluorescence Lifetime and thermal stability were investigated. The results show that a broad excitation band indicates the formation of RE complexes in the solid thin films. RE ions, which are restrained in a silica matrix, present longer lifetime and higher thermal stability than that in DMF/PVB films containing the corresponding pure complexes. Thin films of an organo-soluble polyimide based on 1,4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA) and 2,2'-dimethyl-4,4'-methylene dianiline (DMMDA) have been studied. A prism coupler was used to measure the refractive indices. The average refractive indices of thin films prepared by annealing at different temperatures and times were chosen to characterize the condensation states of thin films. Thin films annealed at 200 degrees C show irreversible changes in physical properties, eg solubility. FTIR spectroscopy showed that the chain structures of the above thin films remained unchanged. It is proposed that specific molecular interactions induce the irreversible changes revealed by fluorescence spectroscopy. (C) 2000 Society of Chemical Industry.

A novel method for fabrication of nanometer-sized electrodes and tips suitable for scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is reported. A fine etched Pt wire is coated with polyimide, which was produced by polymerization on the Pt surface initiated by heat. This method can prepare electrodes with effective radii varying from a few to hundreds of nanometers. Scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and SECM were used to characterize these electrodes. Well-defined steady-state voltammograms could be obtained in aqueous or in 1,2-dichloroethane solutions. Ibis method produced the nanoelectrodes with exposed Pit on the apex, and they can also be employed as the nanotips for SECM investigations. Different sizes of Pt nanotips made by this method were employed to evaluate the kinetics of the redox reaction of Ru(NH3)6(3+) on the surface of a large Pt electrode by SECM, and the standard rate constant kappa (o) of this system was calculated from the best fit of the SECM approach curve. This result is similar to the values obtained by analysis of the obtained voltammetric data.

Nanometer-scale elastic moduli and yield strengths of polycarbonate (PC) and polystyrene (PS) thin films were measured with atomic force microscopy (AFM) indentation measurements. By analysis of the AFM indentation force curves with the method by Oliver and Pharr, Young's moduli of PC and PS thin films could be obtained as 2.2 +/- 0.1 and 2.6 +/- 0.1 GPa, respectively, which agree well with the literature values. By fitting Johnson's conical spherical cavity model to the measured plastic zone sizes, we obtained yield strengths of 141.2 MPa for PC thin films and 178.7 MPa for PS thin films, which are similar to2 times the values expected from the literature. We propose that it is due to the AFM indentation being asymmetric, which was not accounted for in Johnson's model. A correction factor, epsilon, of similar to0.72 was introduced to rescale the plastic zone size, whereupon good agreement between theory and experiment was achieved.

Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) technique was used to measure the ion transfer in redox processes in electroactive organic thin films, such as self-assembled monolayer (SAM) (4-pyridyl hydroquinone, abbr. 4PHQ), multilayer based on SAM and conducting polymer film (here poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), abbr. PEDOT). A mechanism of mixed ion transfer is developed and presented. Analysis of mixed ion transfer during redox processes successfully elucidates the deviation of oscillation frequency of the quartz crystal from theoretical expectation.

In this paper, we describe a simple procedure to make agar-gel microelectrodes by filling micropipettes. These microelectrodes were used to study K+ transfer across the agar-water \ 1,2-dichloroethane interface facilitated by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6), and the transfer of tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)). The results observed were similar to those obtained at micro-liquid \ liquid interfaces. The effect of various amounts of agar in the aqueous phase was optimized and 3% agar was chosen based on the potential window and solidification time. The different shapes of micro-agar-gel electrodes were prepared in a similar way. The fabricated agar-gel microelectrodes obey the classical micro-disk steady-state current equation, which is different from the behavior of a normal micropipette filled with aqueous solution without silanization. Stable monolayer of the polyaniline doped with camphor sulfonic acid at the air-water interface has been obtained, of which multilayers have been successfully deposited by Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto CaF2 substrate. The limiting mean molecular area and collapse pressure are found to be 0.294 nm(2) and 41 mN/m, respectively. The multilayers were characterized by IR and W-Vis-NIR spectroscopies. X-ray small-angle diffraction data show that the multilayer was periodic layer structure with the layer spacing of 1.60 nm. The comparisons are also made with characterization of the casting film. The multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of pr,ly 3-(2-(5-chlorobenzotriazole)ethyl) thiophene (PCBET) blended with amphibious arachidic acid (AA) were prepared and characterized. The photoluminescence intensity of the blend film was enhanced as the AA increased by a certain amount. The PCBET excimers were not formed in the blend LB films.

The disadvantages of Normally White Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display (NW-TN-LCD) were discussed. The reason that the negative birefringent polyimide thin films were used to compensate NW-TN-LCD to decrease off-axis leakage, improve contrast ratios and enlarge viewing angles was explained in this paper. A certain polyimide thin film was taken as an example to show compensation effect on NW-TN-LCD.
