A hybrid material with a conductive organic network in an inorganic matrix has been prepared by in-situ hydrolysis/polycondensation of TEOS in an aqueous solution of a solubilized polyaniline. Due to intense hydrogen bonding (indicated by Si-29 NMR and FTIR) the conductive polymer is very well dispersed in the silica matrix. The Figure shows SEM images of a 46/54 wt.-% hybrid at two temperatures (left 20 degreesC, right 100 degreesC).

The homoepitaxial crystallization in the films of a thermotropic liquid crystalline chloro-ply(aryl ether ketone) is studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED). The homoepitaxy takes place in the temperature range 330-320 degreesC, in which a highly-ordered smectic crystalline phase of the copolymer with a single-crystal-like banded structure is formed during the cooling process from the isotropic melt. The homoepitaxial crystallizations with angles of 32 degrees and 122 degrees between the two b axes are the major populations observed, and possess epitaxial contact planes of (100)(I)-(210)(II) and (010)(I)-(210)(II); respectively.

The thermal stability, crystallization behavior and biodegradability of poly(beta -hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) were studied by DSC,TGA, optical microscopy and WAXD. The results showed that thermal stability of maleated PHB was obviously improved, comparing with that of pure PHB. The temperature of decomposition was enhanced about 20 degreesC After grafting MA, the crystallization behavior of PHB changed evidently. The rate of spherulite growth decreased, the crystallization temperature from the melt state reduced, and the cold crystallization temperature from the glass state increased. With the increase in graft degree, the banding texture of spherulite became more distinct and orderly. Moreover, the introduction of MA groups promoted the biodegradation of PHB.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in poly(ethylene terephthalate)poly(ethylene oxide) (PETPEO) segmented copolymer and PEO homopolymer has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, as well as transmission electron microscope. The kinetics of PEO in copolymer and PEO homopolymer under nonisothermal crystallization condition has been analyzed by Ozawa equation. The results show that Ozawa equation only describes the crystallization behavior of PEO-6000 homopolymer successfully, but fails to describe the whole crystallization process of PEO in copolymer because the secondary crystallization in the later stage could not be neglected. Due to the constraint of PET segments imposed on the PEO segments, a distinct two stage of crystallization of PEO in copolymer has been investigated by using Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deal with the nonisothermal crystallization data. In the case of PEO-6000 homopolymer, good linear relation for the whole crystallization process is obtained owing to the secondary crystallization does not occur under our experimental condition. In this paper, blends of Nylon 6,6 with the liquid crystal polymer Vectra A950 are considered; specifically we focused our attention on Nylon 6,6 modifications by interchange reactions that can occur in the melt, as a function of mixing conditions and blend compositions. Two matrix samples have been used, characterised by a slightly different relative amount of amine and carboxylic end groups, being the latter predominant in both cases. The dried polymers Nylon 6,6/Vectra, combined in weight ratios between 95/5 and 50/50, were subjected to reactive blending with different methods (single-screw extruder, Brabender, pyrex reactor). Pure Nylon samples have been also investigated as reference materials. The soluble Nylon 6,6-rich fraction of each blend was separated from the insoluble Vectra-rich one and used for molecular and spectroscopic characterisations. Thermal and morphological analyses, as well as testing of tensile properties, were carried out on the blends. Evidences of the occurrence of interchange reactions are given and the most probable ones are suggested. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The paper studies the morphology and mechanical properties of immiscible binary blends of the nylon 1010 and HIPS through the radiation crosslinking method. In this blend, the HIPS particles were the dispersed phases in the nylon 1010 matrix. With increasing of dose, the elastic modulus increased, However, the tensile strength. elongation at bleak and the energy of fracture increased to a maximum at a dose of 0.34 MGy, then reduced with the increasing of dose. SEM photographs show that the hole sizes are not changed obviously at low dose and at high dose, remnants that cannot be dissolved in formic acid and THF can be observed in the holes and on the surface. TEM photographs showed that radiation destroys the rubber phases in the polymer blend. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly (trimethopropane trimethacrylate) (PTMPTMA) interpenetrate networks have been synthesized. The confined crystallization behavior of PEO in the PTMTYTMA networks has been investigated by a differential scanning calorimeter and scanning electron microscope. The degree of PEO crystallinity in PEO/PTMPTMA interpenetrate networks reduces with the increase of PTMPTMA. PEO is in an amorphous state when the concentration of PEO is lower than 50% in the interpenetrate networks system. The melting points of crystalline PEO in the networks are lower than that of pure PEG, and the melting point of PEO in the networks is higher and increases with the increase of PEO in the interpenetrate networks. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction results show that the PEO crystallite size perpendicular to the (120) plane is not affected as much as PEO in silica networks. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. The effect of the elastomer stiffness on brittle-tough transition in elastomer toughening thermoplastics was quantitatively studied. A correlation between brittle-tough transition temperature and the elastomer stiffness was obtained. The calculation from this correlation showed that the brittle-tough transition temperature (T-bt) Of elastomer toughening thermoplastics slowly increased up to one tenth of the modulus of matrix, thereafter it increased rapidly with increasing the modulus of elastomer. The results indicated that the modulus of the elastomer must be one-tenth or less of that of the matrix in order to be effective at low temperature. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. The fracture behavior of ABS materials with a particle diameter of 110 nm and of 330 nm was studied using instrumented Charpy impact tests. The effects of rubber content and temperature on fracture behavior, deformation mode, stable crack extension, plastic zone size, J-integral value, and crack opening displacement were investigated. In the case of a particle size of 110 nm, the material was found to break in a brittle manner, and the dominant crack mechanism was unstable crack propagation. Fracture toughness increases with increasing rubber content. In the case of a particle size of 330 nm, brittle-to-tough transition was observed. The J-integral value first increases with rubber content, then levels off after the rubber content is greater than 16 wt %. The J-integral value of a particle diameter of 330 nm was found to be much greater than that of 110 nm. The J-integral value of both series first increased with increasing temperature until reaching the maximum value, after which it decreased with further increasing temperature. The conclusion is that a particle diameter of 330 nm is more efficient than that of 110 nm in toughening, but for both series the effectiveness of rubber modification decreases with increasing temperatures higher than 40 degreesC because of intrinsic craze formation in the SAN matrix at temperatures near the glass transition of SAN. Recent research carried out at the Chinese Institute of Applied Chemistry has contributed significantly to the understanding of the radiation chemistry of polymers. High energy radiation has been successfully used to cross-link fluoropolymers and polyimides. Here chain flexibility has been shown to play an important role, and T-type structures were found to exist in the cross-linked fluoropolymers. A modified Charlesby-Pinner equation, based upon the importance of chain flexibility, was developed to account for the sol-radiation dose relationship in systems of this type. An XPS method has been developed to measure the cross-linking yields in aromatic polymers and fluoropolymers, based upon the dose dependence of the aromatic shake-up peaks and the F/C ratios, respectively. Methods for radiation cross-linking degrading polymers in polymer blends have also been developed, as have methods for improving the radiation resistance of polymers through radiation cross-linking.

The surface structure of the ring-banded spherulites in polymer blends PCL/SAN (90/10) was studied by optical microscopy, SEM, and TEM, respectively. It is interesting to find that the surface structure of the ring-banded spherulites in polymer blends PCL/SAN (90/10) is made up of the convex bands. The landscape of the convex bands on the surface has been little emphasized before. Radial fibrils are arranged on the bands. Details of the radial fibrils on the bands can be observed by TEM. The landscape of the convex bands on the surface and twisting of lamellae in the convex bands for PCL/SAN blends may be useful to explain the formation mechanism of the ring banded spherulites in polymer blends or even in homopolymers. The PL and EL properties of the polymer blends of PVK and blue PPV copolymer were studied. Considerable enhancement of both the photoluminescent and the electroluminescent intensity were observed by using the polymer blends as emission layer in the LED devices. The energy transfer process and the formation of exciplex in the polymer blends were also discussed.

The interface behavior of polyamide 1010 (PA1010) and polypropylene (PP) was studied. In order to improve their interfacial adhesion, functional PP was prepared by means of grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on PP main chains and used instead of plain PP. Several technological characterizations were performed here on their interfaces. ESCA was used to confirm that some kind of reaction occurred between end groups of PA1010 and epoxy species of PP-g-GMA. The peel test was adopted to measure interfacial adhesion. It was found that the fracture energy of interfaces between PA1010 and PP-g-GMA was dramatically increased with the content of GMA. Their interfaces were observed as being blurred by using SEM and TEM and a crack that could be seen in the case of the interfaces of the PA1010 and the plain PP disappeared.
