Based on Takayanagi's two-phase model, a three-phase model including the matrix, interfacial region, and fillers is proposed to calculate the tensile modulus of polymer nanocomposites (E-c). In this model, fillers (sphere-, cylinder- or plate-shape) are randomly distributed in a matrix. If the particulate size is in the range of nanometers, the interfacial region will play an important role in the modulus of the composites. Important system parameters include the dispersed particle size (t), shape, thickness of the interfacial region (tau), particulate-to-matrix modulus ratio (E-d/E-m), and a parameter (k) describing a linear gradient change in modulus between the matrix and the surface of particle on the modulus of nanocomposites (E-c). The effects of these parameters are discussed using theoretical calculation and nylon 6/montmorillonite nanocomposite experiments. The former three factors exhibit dominant influence on E-c At a fixed volume fraction of the dispersed phase, smaller particles provide an increasing modulus for the resulting composite, as compared to the larger one because the interfacial region greatly affects E-c. Moreover, since the size of fillers is in the scale of micrometers, the influence of interfacial region is neglected and the deduced equation is reduced to Takayanagi's model. The curves predicted by the three-phase model are in good agreement with experimental results. The percolation concept and theory are also applied to analyze and interpret the experimental results.

The effect of polymerization of monomer reactant-polyimide (POI) as the interfacial agent on the interface characteristics, morphology features, and crystallization of poly(ether sulfone)/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PES/PPS) blends were investigated using a scanning electron microscope, FTIR, WAXD, and XPS surface analysis. It was found that the interfacial adhesion was enhanced, the particle size of the dispersed phase was reduced, and the miscibility between PES and PPS was improved by the addition of POI. It was also found that POI was an effective nucleation agent of the crystallization for PPS.

The transesterification of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) was carried out by using stannous octoate as catalyzer in liquid phase. The effects of reaction conditions on the transesterification, including reaction temperature, reaction time and catalyzer content, were investigated. The sequence distribution, crystallization behavior and thermal stability of PHB-co-PCL copolyesters were studied by C-13-NMR, FTIR, DSC, WAXD and TGA. The results showed that the transesterification of PHB with PCL was confirmed to produce a block copolymer, and enhancing reaction temperature and increasing reaction time were advantageous to the transesterification. With the increase in PCL content in the block copolymer, the crystallization behavior of PHB-co-PCL copolyesters changed evidently. On the other hand, the introduction of PCL segment into PHB chains did not change its crystalline structure; moreover, thermal stability of PHB-co-PCL copolyesters was a little improved in air, comparing with that of pure PHB.

With the aid of thermodynamics of Gibbs, the expression of the spinodal was derived for the polydisperse polymer-solvent system in the framework of Sanchez-Lacombe Lattice Fluid Theory (SLLFT). For convenience, we considered that a model polydisperse polymer contains three sub-components. According to our calculation, the spinodal depends on both weight-average ((M) over bar (w)) and number-average ((M) over bar (n)) molecular weights of the polydisperse polymer, but the z-average molecular weight ((M) over bar (z)) dependence on the spinodal is invisible. The dependence of free volume on composition, temperature, molecular weight, and its distribution results in the effect of (M) over bar (n) on the spinodal. Moreover, it has been found that the effect of changing (M) over bar (w) on the spinodal is much bigger than that of changing (M) over bar (n) and the extrema of the spinodal increases with the rise of the weight-average molecular weight of the polymer in the solutions with upper critical solution temperature (UCST). However, the effect of polydispersity on the spinodal can be neglected for the polymer with a considerably high weight-average molecular weight. A more simple expression of the spinodal for the polydisperse polymer solution in the framework of SLLFT was also derived under the assumption of upsilon(*)=upsilon(1)(*)=upsilon(2)(*) and (1/r(1)(0))-(1/r(2i)(0))-->(1/r(1)(0)).

The thermal decomposition mechanism of maleated poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was investigated by FTIR and H-1 NMR. The results of experiments showed that the random chain scission of maleated PHB obeyed the six-membered ring ester decomposition process. The thermal decomposition behavior of PHB and maleated PHB with different graft degree were studied by thermogravimetry (TGA) using various heating-up rates. The thermal stability of maleated PHB was evidently better than that of PHB. With increase in graft degree, the thermal decomposition temperature of maleated PHB gradually increased and then declined. Activation energy E. as a kinetic parameter of thermal decomposition was estimated by the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Kissinger methods, respectively. It could be seen that approximately equal values of activation energy were obtained by both methods.

Communication: Conducting semi-interpenetrating network composites with low conductivity percolation threshold were synthesized from waterborne conducting polyaniline (cPAn) and melamine-urea resin, A perfect network of cPAn in the composite was observed by means of TEM (see Figure). The conductivity stability of cPAn in water was improved by confining the chain mobility of cPAn via in-situ crosslinking of melamine-urea resin. Cyclic voltammetry of the composites reveals electrochemical activities and reversibilities similarly to those of pure cPAn.

A series of novel nitrogen- and sulfur-containing conjugated polymers with well-defined conjugation length have been synthesized via an acid-induced self-polycondensation of functional monomers with methylsulfinyl groups. Synthesized polymers exhibit good solubility in common solvents, such as CHCl3, THF, DMF, DMSO, and NMP. With increased numbers of aminophenyl groups, these polymers have shown similar electrical properties to polyaniline (PAn), and these are demonstrated by UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements on the polymers. The conductivity of preliminarily protonic-doped poly[phenylene sulfide-alt-tetrakis(aniline)] (PPSTEA) is up to 10(-1) S cm(-1).

In this study, we established a correlation between cavitations volume and the brittle-ductile transition (BDT) for particle toughened thermoplastics. The brittle-ductile transition temperature (T-BD) was calculated as a function of T* and interparticle distance (ED), respectively, where T* was a parameter related to the volume of cavitations. The results showed that the smaller the cavitations volume, the higher the brittle-ductile transition temperature. The calculations correlated well with the experimental data. With respect to rubber particle, the rigid particle was too hard to be voided during deformation, thereby the TED of the blend was much higher than that of rubber particle toughened thermoplastic. This was a main reason that rubber particle could toughen thermoplastics effectively, whereas rigid particle could not.

Nanometre-sized poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) particle domains in a confined space were obtained by blending PVDF with excess poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). When these particles were small enough they showed beta -form structure, which was different from the structure of bigger particles or PVDF bulk. However, the beta -form was thermodynamically metastable because it could eventually be transformed to a more stable phase by annealing at a certain temperature. Larger particle domains were of identical phase to the bulk, indicating that small size favours the formation of the beta -form. (C) 2000 Society of Chemical Industry.

Polyamide (PA)1010 is blended with a saturated polyolefin elastomer, ethylene-cu-olefin copolymer (EOCP). To improve the compatibility of PA1010 with EOCP, different grafting rates of EOCP with maleic anhydride (MA) are used. The reaction between PA1010 and EOCP-g-MA during extrusion is verified through an extraction test. Mechanical properties, such as notched Izod impact strength, elongation at break, etc., are examined as a function of grafting rate and weight fraction of elastomer. It was found that in the scale of grafting rate (0.13-0.92 wt %), 0.51 wt % is an extreme point for several mechanical properties. Elastomer domains of PA1010/ EOCP-g-MA blends show a finer and more uniform dispersion in the matrix than that of PA1010/EOCP blends. For the same grafting rate, the average sizes of elastomer particles are almost independent on the contents of elastomer, but for different grafting rates, the particle sizes are decreased with increasing grafting rate. The copolymer formed during extrusion strengthens the interfacial adhesion and acts as an emulsifier to prevent the aggregation of elastomer in the process of blending. This paper studies the radiation properties of the immiscible blend of nylon1010 and HIPS. The gel fraction increased with increasing radiation dose. The network was found mostly in nylon1010, the networks were also found in both nylon1010 and HIPS when the dose reaches 0.85 MGy or more. We used the Charleby-Pinner equation and the modified Zhang-Sun-Qian equation to simulate the relationship with the dose and the sol fraction. The latter equation fits well with these polymer blends and the relationship used by it showed better linearity than the one by the Charleby-Pinner equation. We also studied the conditions of formation of the network by the mathematical expectation theorem for the binary system. Thermal properties of polymer blend were observed by DSC curves. The crystallization temperature decreases with increasing dose because the cross-linking reaction inhibited the crystallization procession and destroyed the crystals. The melting temperature also reduced with increasing radiation dose. The dual melting peak gradually shifted to single peak and the high melting peak disappeared at high radiation dose. However, the radiation-induced crystallization was observed by the heat of fusion increasing at low radiation dose. On the other hand, the crystal will be damaged by radiation. A similar conclusion may be drawn by the DSC traces when the polymer blends were crystallized. When the radiation dose increases, the heat of fusion reduces dramatically and so does the heat of crystallization. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Isotactic polypropylene in its a modification (alpha iPP) crystallises epitaxially on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and several hemiacids or salts of substituted benzoic acids via a novel contact plane, namely (110): so far, the only known contact plane involved in alpha iPP homo- and hetero-epitaxies was (010). In spite of its complicated architecture (alternation of antichiral helices with different azimuthal settings), the (110)(alpha iPP) contact plane displays well defined, if not prominent, rows of methyl side chains parallel to the crystallographic (112) direction (at 57 degrees to the c-axis) and approximate to 5.5 Angstrom apart. The matching contact planes of the substrates display linear gratings made of rows of e.g. chlorine atoms or PTFE chains with similar approximate to 5.5 Angstrom inter-row or interchain distances. Various morphologies are observed in iPP thin films crystallised at different cooling rates in the presence of PTFE; they can be analysed in terms of a succession and interplay of successive epitaxies: initial alpha iPP/PTFE heteroepitaxy, followed by alpha iPP/alpha iPP and gamma iPP/alpha iPP homoepitaxies. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and silica (SiO2) organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been synthesized by sol-gel approach. The crystallization behavior of PEO in silica networks has been investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The degree of PEO crystallinity in PEO/SiO2 hybrid networks reduces with the increase of SiO2. PEO is in amorphous state when the concentration of PEO is lower than 50 wt% in the hybrid materials. The melting points of PEO in the networks are lower than that of pure PEG, but the melting point of PEO in the networks almost has the same melting point. WAXD and SEM results show that the crystalline behavior of PEO in PEO/SiO2 hybrid system is sternly confined. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A novel conducting polymer poly(phenylene sulfide-tetraaniline) (PPSTEA), with tetraaniline (TA) and phenylene sulfide (PS) segments in its repeat unit, has been synthesized through an acid-induced polycondensation reaction of 4-methylsulfinylphenyl-capped tetraaniline. The new polymer, which represents the first soluble conducting polyaniline analogue with well-defined structure, has high molecular weight, good solubility in common solvents, and good film-forming properties. Its electrical property is analogous to polyaniline. The conductivity of preliminarily, protonic-doping PPSTEA is up to 10 degrees S/cm. This synthetic strategy appears to be general for developing novel well-defined polyaniline analogue containing much longer fixed conjugation length.
