2,2',3,3'-Oxydiphthalic dianhydride (2,2',3,3'-ODPA) and 2,3,3',4'-ODPA were synthesized from 3-chlorophthalic anhydride with 2,3-xylenol and 3,4-xylenol, respectively. Their structures were determined via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. A series of polyimides derived from isomeric ODPAs with several diamines were prepared in dimethylacetamide (DMAc) with the conventional two-step method. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight spectra showed that the polymerization of 2,2',3,3'-ODPA with 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) has a greater trend to form cyclic oligomers than that of 2,3,3',4'-ODPA. Both 2,2',3,3'-ODPA and 2,3,3',4'-ODPA based polyimides have good solubility in polar aprotic solvents such as DMAc, dimethylformamide, and N-methylpyrrolidone. The 5% weight-loss temperatures of all polyimides were obtained near 500 degreesC in air. Their glass-transition temperatures measured by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis or differential scanning calorimetry decreased according to the order of polyimides on the basis of 2,2',3,3'-ODPA, 2,3,3',4'-ODPA, and 3,3',4,4'-ODPA. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction of all polyimide films from isomeric ODPAs and ODA showed some certain extent of crystallization after stretching. Rheological properties revealed that polyimide (2,3,3',4'-ODPA/ODA) has a comparatively lower melt viscosity than its isomers, which indicated its better melt processability.

The reverse atom transfer radical polymerization(RATRP) of (-)-menthyl methacrylate ((-)-MnMA) with AIBN(AIBN/CuCl2/bipyridine(bipy) or (-)sparteine((-)Sp) =1/2/4) initiating system in THF has been studied. The dependence of the specific rotation on molecular weight was investigated.

We synthesized a hydroxyphenyloxadiazole lithium complex (LiOXD) as a blue light-emitting and electron injection/transport material to be used in double-layer organic electroluminescent devices. Devices with the concise configuration of ITO/TPD/LiOXD/Al showed bright blue EL emission centered at 468 nm with a maximum luminance of 2900 cd m(-2). A current efficiency of 3.9 cd A(-1) and power efficiency of 1.1 lm W-1 were obtained. LiOXD was also examined as an interface material. The efficiency of an ITO/NPB/Alq(3)/Al device increased considerably when LiOXD was inserted between Alq(3) and aluminium. The improvement of the device characteristics with LiOXD approached that observed with the dielectric LiF salt.

A facile route to 2-benzylthio-5-phenyl-3,4-disubstituted thiophenes was described. Catalyzed by sodium hydroxide, the title compounds were synthesized in moderate to good yields simply from the intramolecular aldol type condensation of alpha-oxo ketene dibenzylthioacetals. The chemical selectivity for this annulation reaction was studied and discussed.

A novel series of emitting aluminum complexes containing two 8-hydroxyquinoline ligands (q) and a phenolato ligand (p) were synthesized and characterized. Double layer organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated using these complexes as luminescent layers, and strong electroluminescence (EL) was observed. It was found that their emitting wavelengths were mainly determined by the first ligands (q). Cyclic voltammograms revealed a partially irreversible n-doping process and indicated that these complexes show excellent electron-transporting ability.

Red shift and quenching effects of the fluorecence spectra of polyquinoline (PQH) solutions in different solvents are observed upon the addition of metal ions, which demonstrates the extraordinary solvent effects on metal-ion recognition and sensing ability (including sensitivity and selectivity) of PQH.

The iododecarboxylation reaction of alpha-carboxylate, alpha-cinnamoyl ketene cyclic dithioacetals 2 was successfully performed with iodine as halogenation reagent and in water insensitive media. This reaction provides a mild and efficient method for the preparation of alpha-iodo, alpha-cinnamoyl ketene cyclic dithioacetals 3 which are important kinds of potential new intermediates to be valued.

The synthesis of mellophanic dianhydride (MPDA), an isomer of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), was studied. A trend of forming cyclic oligomers in the reactions of MPDA with 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) or 4,4'-methylenedianiline (MDA) in DMAC was found. The cyclic dimer from MPDA/MDA was isolated and fully characterized, including an X-ray crystallographic analysis. The reactions of MPDA with aromatic diamines were found much more complicated than those of PMDA. A model study was performed to clarify the reactions. Several byproducts were isolated and characterized, so that, in an usual two-step process to prepare polyimides, imide, amide linkage, and carboxylic group may be involved in the polymer structure. The water, either existing in solvent or being generated during the imidization, is the main reason for the side reactions. The properties of some polyimides derived from MPDA and diamines were tested and compared with those of the isomeric polyimides derived from PMDA.

Racemic cis-BCH-189 can be resolved to (-)-enantiomer (lamivudine) and (+)-enantiomer by esterification of cis-2-hydroxymethyl-5-(N-4(')-acetylcytosine-1'-yl)-1,3-oxathiolane and (+)-menthyl chloroformate in CH3CN with pyridine as base. The two diastereomers of ester were seperated by recrystallization in methanol at 0degreesC. Lamivudine was obtained by deprotection of (-)-diastereomer with high yield.

beta-Dioxodithioate were produced easily from active methenyl precursors, carbondisulfide and RX with potassium carbonate as base. By a selective basic assistant cleavage of a carbon-carbon bond at the beta-dicarbonyl unit of beta-dioxodithioate and the subsequent alkylation with RX/R'X in situ, single or mixed alpha-oxo ketene dithioacetals were, obtained in good yields.
