A manganese molybdenum phosphate, (NH3CH2CH2NH3)(10)(H3O)(3)(H5O)Na-2[MnMo12O24(OH)(6) (PO4)(4)(PO3OH)(4)][MnMo12O24 (OH)(6)(PO4)(6)(PO3OH)(2)]. 9H(2)O, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of this compound may be considered to be two [Mo6O12(OH)(3)(PO4)(2)(HPO4)(2)](7-) units bonded together by a manganese atom, although several P-O groups are not protonated on account of coordination to a Na+ cation. One-dimensional tunnels were formed in the solid. A probe reaction of the oxidation of acetaldehyde with H2O2 using this compound as catalyst was carried out in a liquid-solid system, showing that the manganese molybdenum phosphate has high catalytic activity in the reaction.

Novel macrocyclic aryl thioether ester oligomers have been synthesized in high yield from phthaloyl dichloride and 4,4'-thiodiphenol under pseudo high dilution conditions. The cyclic nature was unambiguously confirmed by a combination of MALDI-TOF MS, gel permeation chromatography and NMR analyses. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction of cyclic ester dimer reveals no severe strain on the cyclic structure. The free-radical ring opening polymerization (ROP) of the macrocyclic oligomers was achieved to give high molecular weight polymers via a transthioetherification reaction. The molecular weight of the polymer resulting from ROP decreases as the conversion of cyclic oligomers increases after a polymerization period of 30 min.

A novel graft-like copolymer of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) with polybutadiene (PB) was synthesized by polymerization of styrene in a toluene solution of PB using the cyclopentadiene titanium trichloride (CpTiCl3)/methylaluminoxane (MAO) catalytic system. The effect of PB on the crystallization behavior of the copolymer was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and wide angle X-ray diffraction. Hydrogenation of the sPS/PB copolymer with p-toluenesulfonyl hydrazide afforded a PE-like copolymer.

A series of layered mixed oxides La4BaCu5-xMnxO13+lambda(x = 0-5) was prepared, characterized and used as catalysts for NO+CO reaction. It was found that all the samples were single phase having a structure with five-layered-perovskite. La4BaCu2Mn3O13+lambda showed the highest activity in the title reaction, this could be attributed to the synergetic effect between Cu and Mn. The results of TPR, TPD and excess oxygen investigations confirmed that the Cu ion would be the active center. The displacement of the Cu ion by Mn caused the Cu ion to be more easily reducible and more content of excess oxygen, and it was beneficial to the activity of the catalyst. The reaction mechanism was also proposed.

Hydrotalcite-like compounds (HTLcs) CoMAlCO3, where M stands for Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, or Fe, were synthesized by coprecipitation. After calcination at 450 degrees C, they became mixed oxides with spinel-like structure. The mixed oxides were characterized by XRD, BET, chemical analysis and the adsorption of NO. The catalytic decomposition of NO and its reduction by CO were studied over these mixed oxides. The study showed that the catalytic activity for removal of NO, was very high. The reaction mechanism is proposed and the effects of d-electrons of the transition metals on catalytic activity are elucidated.

The mixed oxide La2CuO4 was synthesized by four different methods and characterized with XRD, BET, TEM and low angle XRD. The effect of the synthetic method on the crystal structure, crystal size, surface area and catalytic activity to NO - CO reaction were studied. The results showed that the samples derived from different methods exhibited different activity to NO-CO reaction, the reason may be that the concentration and type of oxygen defect were different when the synthetic methods were different.

The catalyst system neodymium phosphonate Nd(P-507)(3)/H2O/Al(i-Bu)(3) for the polymerization of styrene was examined. Effects of the addition order of the catalyst components, catalyst aging time and aging temperature on the catalyst activity and the polymer characteristics were investigated. The catalyst activity for isospecific polymerization of styrene increases with aging time and reaches the maximum with a catalyst aged for 45 min at 70 degrees C. The aging time that the catalyst needs to reach the highest activity for isospecific polymerization decreases with increasing aging temperature. The preformed catalyst and the in situ catalyst were compared with respect to the kinetic behavior of the styrene polymerization and the polymer characteristics.

Catalysts with spinel structure derived from Hydrotalcite-like Compounds (HTLcs) containing cobalt have been investigated in NO catalytic reduction by Co. It was found that catalysts with spinel structures derived from HTLcs had obviously higher activity than that prepared from general methods. A two-step reaction was observed during the reaction curse: NO was first reduced to N2O by Co, and with the increase of temperature, the N2O was reduced to N-2. The reactivity of the catalysts studied increased with the amount of cobalt-content in the catalyst, and decreased with the calcination temperature. The crystal defect would play an important role in the reaction.

The activities of perovskites depend on compositions and preparation methods. Various perovskites, La1-xMxMnO3 (M=Ag, Sr, Ce, La), have been prepared by two different methods (co-precipitation and spray decomposition). The new preparation method, spray decomposition, produced perovskites of a high surface area of over 10 m(2)/g. The catalytic activities for CH4 and CO oxidation have been studied on a series of catalysts, La1-xMxMnO3. The perovskite-type oxide, La0.7Ag0.3MnO3, shows the highest catalytic activity: the complete conversion of CO and CH4 at 370 and 825 K, respectively. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. The thiol group of glutathione (GSH) was protected by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), the product S-substituted dinitrophenyl GSH(GSH-S-DNP) was alcoholized to obtain haptenes 4 and 5 respectively. As haptenes, the two GSH derivatives were characterized by means of H-1 NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS and IR, followed by individually coupling with bovine serum albumin (BSA) via glutaraldehyde. BSB-Hp4 and BSA-Hp5 were purified by Sephadex G-25 gel filtration chromatography. For each conjugate, the average haptene-BSA ratio was 12 : 1. The electrophoresis analysis showed that the average molecular weight of each conjugate was 76 500. The CD spectrum indicated that the conjugates had more a-helix content than BSA did.

The complexes of a series of rare earths with Ge-132 have been prepared. The carboxyl anions of Ge-132 molecule were coordinated to rare earth ion with chelate style. In the complexes molecule, the GeO3/2 group of Ge-132 were hydrolyzed to become -Ge(OH)(3) group, and later does:not coordinate with rare earth ions. All of the complexes possess similar properties. In aqueous solution of pH 6 and 50 degrees C, these complexes can obviously selectively catalytically hydrolize the phosphatide bond of 5'-AMP and 5'-dAMP into phosphatic acid and riboside.

Ring-opening polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (CL) catalyzed by lanthanocenes, O(C2H4C5H3CH3)(2)YCl (Cat-YCl) and Me2Si[(CH3)(3)SiC5R3](2)NdCl (Cat-NdCl) has been carried out for the first time. It has been found that both yttrocene and neodymocene are very efficient to catalyze the polymerization of CL, giving high molecular weight poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL). The effects of [cat]/[epsilon-CL] molar ratio, polymerization temperature and time, as well as solvents were investigated and polymerization temperature is found to be the most important factor affecting the polymerization. The bulk polymerization gives higher molecular weight PCL and higher conversion than that in solution polymerization. NaBPh4 was found to promote the polymerization of epsilon-caprolactone, and thus to increase both the polymerization conversion and MW of poly(epsilon-caprolactone).

Poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(butyl acrylate) synthesized by radical polymerization in a one-step procedure were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, infrared, IH-NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The crystalline property, emulsifying property, and phase transfer catalytic effect in the Williamson reaction were studied. It was found that the crystallinity of the copolymer increased with an increase in both the content and molecular weight of poly( ethylene oxide) (PEO) sequences. DSC curves showed two distinct crystallization temperature due to the heterogeneous nucleation and homogeneous nucleation crystallization. The casting solvent significantly affected the morphology and crystallinity of the solvent cast films. Both the emulsifying volume and the phase transfer catalytic efficiency in the Williamson reaction increased with the amount and PEO content of the block copolymers used, but decreased with an increase in the molecular weight of PEO sequences. Some novel macrocyclic (arylene ether sulfone) containing cardo groups and (arylene ether ketone sulfone) oligomers have been synthesized in high yields by a nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction of 4,4'-difluorophenylsulfone with bisphenols in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate under a pseudo-high-dilution condition. Detailed structural characterization of these oligomers by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS), fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (f.a.b.-m.s.), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (n.m.r.) and single-crystal X-ray structure analysis confirms their cyclic nature, and the composition of the oligomeric mixtures is provided by g.p.c. analysis. Ring polymerization of cyclic oligomers 3a to a high molecular weight polymer with M-w of 59.1 k was achieved by heating at 290 degrees C for 40 min in the presence of a nucleophilic initiator. Polyaniline (PAn) with different molecular weight was prepared by adding organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol or THF into the polymerization mixture. Open-circuit potential measurements showed that the polymerization rate was lowered by the addition of the organic solvent Spectral studies showed that PAn intermediate before the oxidant was consumed was pernigraniline and it was reduced to emeraldine base rapidly by aniline in the termination period. A mechanism of chain propagation was proposed. Chain propagation and autoacceleration period were almost independent of addition of pernigraniline, and the autoacceleration of aniline polymerization is due to more rapid initiation rate.
