The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and cytochrome c-dependent oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (o-PD) was investigated by spectrophotometry and electrochemistry. The results indicated that o-PD underwent facile catalytic oxidation in the presence of cytochrome c, and that the degradation of cytochrome c by hydrogen peroxide can also be partly prevented in the presence of o-PD. The hydroxyl radical scavengers (mannitol and sodium benzoate) and oxo-heme species scavenger (uric acid) do not inhibit the oxidation, which implies that the hydroxylation of o-PD may not be involved in its oxidation. Combining with the results of the mass spectrum, elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectrum of the isolated product, a conceivable structure of the product was suggested. Hybrid materials incorporating poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) via a sol-gel process were studied for a wide range of compositions of PEG by DSC and high resolution solid-state C-13- and Si-29-NMR spectroscopy. The results indicate that the microstructure of the hybrid materials and the crystallization behavior of PEG in hybrids strongly depend on the relative content of PEG. With an increasing content of PEG, the microstructure of hybrid materials changes a lot, from intimate mixing to macrophase separation. It is found that the glass transition temperatures (T-g) (around 373 K) of PEG homogeneously embedded in a silica network are much higher than that (about 223 K) of pure PEG and also much higher in melting temperatures T-m (around 323 K) than PEG crystallites in heterogeneous hybrids. Meanwhile, the lower the PEG content, the more perfect the silica network, and the higher the T-g of PEG embedded in hybrids. An extended-chain structure of PEG was supposed to be responsible for the unusually high T-g of PEG. Homogeneous PEG-TEOS hybrids on a molecular level can be obtained provided that the PEG. content in the hybrids is less than 30% by weight. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A new blend of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) was prepared. The results from solid-state NMR indicate that the PHEMA/PEG(88:12, w/w) blend is miscible on a molecular level.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was polymerized with the rare earth coordination catalyst-system of Nd(O - i-Pr)(3) in toluene. The influences of various ligands in neodymium complexes, molar ratio of Al/Nd, catalyst concentration, catalyst aging time, solvents, the third component CCl4, temperature and time on the polymerization of MMA were studied. The results showed that the polymerization conversion reached more than 80% at a catalyst concentration of 9.2 x 10(-3) mol/L. The appropriate molar ratio of CCl4/Nd was 4. Hydrocarbon was preferred for the polymerzation to obtain a high conversion and a high <(M)over bar w> of PMMA. The H-1 NMR spectra of PMMA indicated that the lower the temperature, the higher the syndiotactic content of PMMA was obtained.

The thermal properties of ethylene propylene copolymer-grafted-acrylic acid (EP-g-AA) were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Compared with the ethylene propylene copolymer (EP), the peak values of the melting temperature (T-m) of the propylene sequences in the grafted EP changed a little, the crystallization temperature (T-c) increased about 8-12 degrees C, and the melting enthalpy (Delta H-m) increased about 4-6 J/g. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of grafted and ungrafted samples was carried out by DSC. Within the scope of the researched crystallization temperature, the Avrami exponent (n) of the ungrafted sample was 1.6-1.8, and that of grafted samples were all above 2, which indicated that the grafted monomer could become the crystal nuclei for the crystallization of propylene sequence. With increasing grafted monomer content, the crystallization rate of propylene sequence in grafted EP increased; it might be the result of rapid nucleation rate and crystal growth rate.

A super-tough polycarbonate (PC) blend was obtained by using epoxidized ethylene propylene diene (eEPDM) rubber as modifier. The notched Izod impact strength of PC/eEPDM (96/4) blend shows a great improvement, with a value about 25 times of that of pure PC. Finely and homogeneously dispersed rubber particles (0.2-0.8 mu m) in the PC matrix indicated good adhesion between the eEPDM rubber phase and the PC matrix. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Stereospecific polymerization of styrene was catalyzed by homogeneous neodymium phosphonate [Nd(P-507)(3)]-H2O-Al(i-Bu)(3) catalytic system. The polymer was separated into isotactic polystyrene and atactic polystyrene by extracting the latter with boiling 2-butanone. The conversion of styrene and the yield of isotactic polystyrene (IY) were influenced by the [H2O]/[Al(i-Bu)(3)] mole ratio and the solvent polarity. The reaction is first order with respect to monomer at 70 degrees C.

In this paper, epoxidation of ethylene propylene diene rubber by in situ generated performic acid is discussed. The samples have been characterized by infra-red and H-1-nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. Quantitative analysis of the reaction products is made possible by using the methyl deformation band at 1377 cm(-1) as internal standard. The conversion of double bonds increases rapidly within the first 1 h, then gradually, over 2 h, has only a slight increase. The maximum conversion ratio of double bonds is about 70%. The relative content of epoxy groups has a top value at about 7 h. The side reactions are also discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A series of macrocyclic arylate dimers have been selectively synthesized by an interfacial polycondensation of o-phthaloyldichloride with bisphenols. A combination of GPC, FAB-MS, H-1 and C-13 NMR unambiguously confirmed the cyclic nature. Although single-crystal X-ray analysis of two such macrocycles reveals no severe strain on the cyclic structures, these macrocycles can undergo facile melt polymerization to give high molecular weight polyarylates.

A mixture of triphenylmethyl methacrylate (TrMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was polymerized with chiral anionic initiator, such as fluorenyl lithium-(-)-sparteine [FlLi-(-)-Sp] and fluorenyl lithium-(+)-2S,3S-dimethoxy-1,4-bis(dimethylamino) butane [FlLi-(+)-DDB] in toluene at -78 degrees C. The results show that after the stable helix formed, when FlLi-(+)-DDB was used as the initiator, TrMA and MMA could be copolymerized, whereas when FlLi-(-)-Sp was used, the two monomers tended to be selectively polymerized into two polymers. This phenomenon has been explained by the existence of helix-selective polymerization. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Macrocyclic arylene ether ketone dimer was isolated from a mixture of cyclic oligomers obtained by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of bisphenol A and 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone and easily polymerized to high molecular weight linear poly(ether ketone). The cyclic compound was characterized by FTIR, H-1- and C-13-NMR, and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Analysis of the spectral and crystal structure reveals extreme distortions of he phenyl rings attached to the isopropylidene center and of the turning points of the molecular polygons. The release of the ring strain on ring-opening combined with entropical difference between the linear polymer chain and the more rigid macrocycle at temperatures of polymerization may be the proposed motivating factors in the polymerization of this precursor to high molecular weight poly(ether ketone). A series of new macrocyclic aromatic esters have been efficiently synthesized from o-phthaloyl dichloride and various bisphenols, and unambiguously characterized by a combination of GPC, MS(FAB), FTIR and NMR. These macrocyclic oligomers undergo facile ring-opening polymerization in the presence of anionic initiators to give high molecular weight polyarylates.

The thermal properties and crystalline structure of the amphiphilic graft copolymers CR-g-PEG600, CR-g-PEG2000, and CR-g-PEG6000 using chloroprene rubber (CR) as the hydrophobic backbone and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights as the hydrophilic side chains were studied by DSC and WAXD. The results showed that a distinct phase-separated structure existed in CR-g-PEGs because of the incompatibility between the backbone segments and the side-chain segments. For all the polymers studied, T-m2, which is the melting point of PEG crystalline domains in CR-g-PEG, decreased compared to that of the corresponding pure PEG and varied little with PEG content. For CR-g-PEG600 and CR-g-PEG2000, T-m1, which is the melting point of the CR crystalline domains, increased with increasing PEG content when the PEG content was not high enough, and at constant PEG content, the longer were the PEG side chains the higher was the T-m1. The crystallite size L-011 of CR in CR-g-PEGs increased compared to that of the pure CR and decreased with increasing PEG content. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
