A highly active catalyst, MnOx/TiO2-Al2O3, was prepared by impregnating MnOx species on TiO2-modified Al2O3. The TiO2 species in TiO2-Al2O3 support is in a monolayer dispersion, and the MnOx species is again highly dispersed on TiO2-Al2O3 Support. The total oxidation of chlorobenzene and o-dichlorobenzene on MnOx/TiO2-Al2O3 catalyst can be achieved at 300 degreesC and 250 degreesC respectively, at the space velocity of 8000 h(-1). The activity of MnOx/TiO2-Al2O3 catalyst (Mn loading 11.2 wt%) is gradually increased in the first 10-20 h and then keeps stable at least for the measured 52 h at 16,000 h(-1). Furthermore, no chlorinated organic byproducts are detected in the effluent during the oxidative destruction of chlorobenzene and o-dichlorobenzene. It is proposed that the partially chlorinated and highly dispersed manganese oxide on a monolayer TiO2-modified Al2O3 is responsible for the high and stable activity for the total oxidation of chlorinated aromatics. The p16 tumor suppressor gene is inactivated by promoter region hypermethylation in many types of tumor. Recent studies showed that aberrant methylation of the p16 gene is an early event in many tumors, especially in lung cancer, and may constitute a new biomarker for early detection and monitoring of prevention trials. We detected tumor-associated aberrant hypermethylation of the p16 gene in plasma and tissue DNA from 153 specimens using a modified semi-nested methylation-specific PCR (MSP) combining plastic microchip electrophoresis or slab gel electrophoresis, respectively. Specimens were from 79 lung cancer patients, 15 abdominal tumor patients, 30 positive controls and 30 negative controls. The results showed that the positive rate obtained by microchip electrophoresis was more than 26.6% higher and the same speciticity was kept when compared with slab gel electrophoresis. The microchip electrophoresis can rapidly and accurately analyze the PCR products of methylated DNA and obviously improve the positive rate of diagnosis of cancer patients when compared with gel electrophoresis. This method with the high assay sensitivity might be used for detection of methylation of p16 gene and even to facilitate early diagnosis of cancer patients. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Highly ordered mesoporous ethanesilica (MES) with 2D hexagonal structure was synthesized from 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl) ethane under neutral conditions for the first time. Divalent salts, such as NiCl2, MgCl2, ZnCl2, ZnSO4 and Zn(NO3)(2), were used to help the formation of the ordered mesostructure. The MES samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen sorption, transmission electron microscopy, FT-IR, C-13 and Si-29 solid-state NMR and thermal gravimetric analysis. A phase transition from a disordered wormhole-like structure to an ordered P6mm structure was observed upon the addition of inorganic salts. The pore size of the MES decreases from 4.7 to 3.9 nm with increasing content of the inorganic salts. Fluoride was also found to be important for the formation of ordered MES under neutral conditions.

Iron-substituted SBA-15 (Fe-SBA-15) materials have been synthesized via a simple direct hydrothermal method under weak acidic conditions. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), NZ sorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations show that the resultant materials have well-ordered hexagonal meso-structures. The diffused reflectance UV-vis and UV resonance Raman spectroscopy characterizations show that most of the iron ions exist as isolated framework species for calcined materials when the Fe/Si molar ratios are below 0.01 in the gel. The presence of iron species also has significant salt effects that can greatly improve the ordering of the mesoporous structure. Different iron species including isolated framework iron species, extraframework iron clusters and iron oxides are formed selectively by adjusting the pH values of the synthesis solutions and Fe/Si molar ratios. A mild and highly efficient copper-catalyzed system for N-arylation of alkylamines with aryl iodides using binaphthol-based phosphoramidites as ligands was developed. The phosphoramidite ligands are stable, cost-effective and easily prepared from inexpensive, commercially available starting materials using a simple, efficient method. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Reactions of selenium with imines ((RRC)-C-1=NR2) of aldehydes and ketones in the presence of carbon monoxide, water and triethylamine lead to reductive selenation, on aerobic work-up, to afford symmetrical diselenides ((RRCHSe)-C-1)(2) in good to excellent yields. The proposed mechanism suggests that both in situ generated carbonyl selenide (SeCO) and hydrogen selenide (H2Se) are involved in the reaction.

A highly efficient palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling of aryl bromides with aiylboronic acids using phosphoramidite ligand 2c was developed. The phosphoramidite ligands are cost-effective and easily prepared from inexpensive, commercially available starting materials using a simple, efficient method. It represents an advance toward the discovery of low-cost catalyst systems for eventual availability. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
