The membranes of polyvinylidene fluoride, which were synthesized by our laboratory, were used to study the transfer and extraction performances of Nd(III) and Sm(III) with the extraction system of HEH/EHP-kerosene. The results show that the membrane material was suitable to the study on membrane extraction, and could offer a good transfer performance in the membrane construction parameters selected, The extraction reaction in the membrane module was the same as that in liquid-liquid process, HEH/EHP ammoniated for increasing the mass transfer coefficient was almost the same with increasing the concentration of HEH/EHP, and H+ was still transferred first at higher pH range of feed solution when HEH/EHP was ammoniated, The controlling model of the membrane extraction process was the diffusion model accompanied by interfacial reaction, The controlling function of interfacial reaction would increase gradually with the increasing of the membrane pore size. The mass transfer coefficient increased when extraction and stripping were carried out simultaneously.

A series of LnSrNiO(4)(A(2)BO(4), Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) mixed oxides with K2NiF4 structure, in which A-site(Sr) was partly substituted by individual light rare earth element, was prepared. The solid state physico-chemical properties including crystal structure, defect structure, IR spectrum, valence state of H-site ion, nonstoichiometric oxygen, oxygenous species, the properties of oxidation and reduction etc. as well as the catalytic behavior for NO decomposition on these mixed oxides were investigated. The results show that all of these mixed oxide catalysts have high activity for the direct decomposition of NO(at 900 degrees C the conversion of NO is more than 90%). The effect of the substitution of light rare earth elements at A-site on catalytic behavior for NO decomposition was elucidated.

The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and cytochrome c-dependent oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (o-PD) was investigated by spectrophotometry and electrochemistry. The results indicated that o-PD underwent facile catalytic oxidation in the presence of cytochrome c, and that the degradation of cytochrome c by hydrogen peroxide can also be partly prevented in the presence of o-PD. The hydroxyl radical scavengers (mannitol and sodium benzoate) and oxo-heme species scavenger (uric acid) do not inhibit the oxidation, which implies that the hydroxylation of o-PD may not be involved in its oxidation. Combining with the results of the mass spectrum, elemental analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectrum of the isolated product, a conceivable structure of the product was suggested. The catalytic oxidation of cyclohexene to cyclohexanone using Pd(OAc)(2)/HQ/FePc was investigated in an acidic aqueous solution of acetonitrile. The role of each component of this system in the oxidation of cyclohexene was explored by means of UV-VIS, IR, XPS spectroscopy and. cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Based on the experimental results, the mechanism of the oxidation of cyclohexene catalyzed by Pd(OAc)(2)/HQ/FePc was elucidated.

Electrochemical behavior of the transfer of H+ across polypyrrole membrane (PPM) was studied. The transfer process was quasi-reversible and mainly diffusion-controlled. PPM electropolymerized in water solution has better reversibility than that in CH3CN solution for the transfer of H+. The transfer process of H+ across the two kinds of PPM indicated that the PPM electrochemically polymerized was of asymmetry.

Two mixed oxide systems La2-xSrxCuO4+/-lambda(0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.0) and La2+xThxCuO4+/-lambda(0.0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.4) with K2NiF4 structure were prepared by varying re values; Their crystal structures were studied by means of XRD and IR spectra. The average valence of Cu ion at B site, nonstoichiometric oxygen (A) and the chemical composition in the bulk and on the surface of the catalysts were measured by means of chemical analysis and XPS. The catalytic behavior in reaction CO + NO was investigated under the regular change of average valence of Cu ion at B site and nonstoichiometric oxygen (lambda). Meanwhile, the adsorption and activation of the small molecules NO and the mixture of NO + CO over the mixed oxide catalysts were studied by means of MS-TPD. The catalytic mechanism of reaction NO + CO over these oxide catalysts were proposed; and it has been found that, at lower temperatures the activation of NO is the rate determining step and the catalytic activity is related to the lower valent metallic ion and its concentration, while at higher temperatures the adsorption of NO is the rate determining step and the catalytic activity is related to the oxygen vacancy and its concentration.

The novel polyetherethersulfone (PES-C) prepared from phenol-phthalein in our institute is an amorphous, rigid, tough material with good mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. To improve its water vapor permeability for the application of gas drying, the PES-C was sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid and transferred in sodium, cupric, and ferric salt forms. The sulfonation degree can be regulated by controlling the temperature and reaction time. Characterization of sulfonated PES-C in sodium form was made by IR. Some properties of the sulfonated PES-C, such as solubility, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, mechanical properties, and transport properties to nitrogen and water vapor have also been discussed. The catalytic mechanisms of triphenyl bismuth (TPB), dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) and their combination have been studied in a model polyurethane reaction system consisting of copolyether (tetrahydrofuran-ethyleneoxide) and N-100; NMR spectroscopy was used to detect the associations between reactants and catalysts. A relatively stable complex was shown to be formed between hydroxyl and isocyanate; the catalysts showed different effects on the isocyanate-hydroxyl complex, therefore resulting in different curing characteristics. The formation of hydrogen bonding between the complexed hydroxyl and other hydroxyl or the resulting urethane provided an ''auto-catalysis'' to urethane formation. DBTDL destroyed the isocyanate-hydroxyl complex before catalyzing the reaction through the formation of a ternary complex, whereas TPB was able to activate the isocyanate-hydroxyl complex directly to form urethane. The reaction catalyzed by the combination of TPB and DBTDL gained advantages from the multiple catalytic entities, i.e., TPB, DBTDL, and a TPB-DBTDL complex. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The surface of aromatic polyamide reverse osmosis composite membrane was modified by oxygen and argon plasma. The water permeability of oxygen-plasma-modified membrane increases, and the chlorine resistance of argon-plasma-modified membrane increases. The spectra of the attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the contact angle of the water were analyzed to explain the improvement of the two performances of the composite membrane. The carboxyl groups were introduced when modified by oxygen plasma, and cross-linking occurred when modified by argon plasma. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A series of Sr2+ doped perovskite like oxides La2-xSrxCuO4-lambda (x = 0 similar to 1) were prepared, the structure, lattice parameters, content of Cu3+, oxygen vacancies created by Sr2+ substitution and composition of these complex oxides were studied by XRD and iodic titration method. The redox ability, active oxygen species and surface image were evaluated and analyzed with TPD, TG, XPS and SEM measurements. The catalytic activity for ammonia oxidation over these oxides was tested, and the relationship among the catalytic properties, structure, nonstoichiometric oxygen, redox ability and surface behavior were correlated and some information on the mechanism of ammonia oxidation was obtained.

Supported catalysts, consisting of SiW12 immobilized on hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS) and its aluminum-substituted derivative (MCM-41) with different loadings and calcination temperatures, have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and NH3-temperature programmed desorption. It is shown that SiW12 retains the Keggin structure on the mesoporous molecular sieves and no HPA crystal phase is developed, even at SiW12 loadings as high as 50 wt%. In the esterification of acetic acid by n-butanol, supported catalysts exhibit a higher catalytic activity and stability and held some promise of practical application. In addition, experimental results indicate that the loaded amount of SiW12 and the calcination temperatures have a significant influence on the catalytic activity, and the existence of aluminum has also an effect on the properties of supported catalysts.

Three new lanthanide (Ln)-alkylaluminium (Al) bimetallic complexes with the formula [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Ln(mu-CF3CHO2)AIR(2) . 2THF](2) (Ln = Nd, Y, R=i-C4H9 (i-Bu); Ln=Eu, R=C2H5(Et); THF=tetrahydrofuran) were synthesized by the reaction of Ln(CF,CO,), (Ln=Nd, Y) with HAI (i-Bu)(2) and of Eu(CF3CO2)(3) with AlEt(3), respectively. Their crystal structures were determined by X-ray diffraction at 233 K. [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Nd (mu-CF3CHO2)Al(i-Bu)(2) . 2THF](2) (Nd-Al) and [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Y(mu-CF3CHO2)Al(i-Bu)(2) . 2THF](2) (Y-Al) are isomorphous and crystallize in space group
with a=12.441(3) Angstrom [12.347(5) Angstrom for Y-Al], b=12.832(3) Angstrom [12.832(4) Angstrom], c=11.334(3) Angstrom [11.292(8) Angstrom], alpha=104.93 (2)degrees [104.45(4)degrees], beta=98.47(2)degrees [98.81(4)degrees], gamma=64.60(2)degrees [64.30(3)degrees], R=0.519 [0.113], R(w)=0.0532 [0.110], Z=1 and [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Eu(CF3CHO2)AlEt(2) . 2THF](2)(Eu-Al) in space group P2(1)/n with a=11.913(6) Angstrom, b=14.051(9) Angstrom, c=17.920(9) Angstrom, alpha=101.88(11)degrees, beta=gamma=90 degrees, R=0.0509, R(w)=0.0471 and Z=2. The six CF3CO2- (including CF3CHO2-) of each complex, among which pairs are equivalent, coordinated to Ln and Al in three patterns: (A) the two oxygen atoms in one of the three CF3CO2- type coordinated to two different Ln; (B) the two oxygen atoms in the second of CF3CO2- type coordinated to Ln and Al, respectively; (C) one of the two oxygen atoms in the third CF3CO2- type bidentately coordinated to two Ln and another oxygen coordinated to Al and one of the two Ln, respectively. Unlike types A and B, in type C the carboxyl carbon with a hydrogen atom bonded to it was found to appear as an sp(3)-hybridized configuration rather than an sp(2)-one. 1D and 2D NMR results further confirmed the existence of such a disproportionated CF3CHO2- ligand. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) could be polymerized by Y-Al or Eu-Al as a single-component catalyst and highly syndiotactic poly(MMA) was obtained. THF could also be polymerized by Y-Al in the presence of a small amount of ECH.

The transfer of chloride ions into a low resistance anion exchange membrane (AEM) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectra. In all cases, concentration polarization of Cl- ions is exterior to the membrane. It controls the flux and produces the limiting currents: either steady state or transient (peak type) current. In CV experiments, when the size of the holes in the membrane was much smaller than the distance between membrane holes, the Cl- anion transfer showed steady state voltammetric behavior. Each hole in the membrane can be regarded as a microelectrode and the membrane was equivalent to a microelectrode array in this condition. When the hole in the membrane was large or the distance between membrane holes was small, the CV curve of the Cl- anion transfer across the membrane showed a peak shape, which was attributed to linear diffusion. In AC impedance measurement, the impedance spectrum of the membrane system was composed of two semicircles at low DC bias, corresponding to the bulk characteristics of the membrane and the kinetic process of ion transfer, respectively. The bulk membrane resistance increases with increasing DC bias and only one semicircle was observed at higher DC bias. The parameters related to kinetic and membrane properties were discussed.

A novel idea relating to the selective barrier layer of a composite membrane is described. The effective interface of the composite membrane could act as a barrier layer which could be controlled to an ideally ultrathin thickness. A new type of polyamide composite membrane was prepared according to this idea, which possessed permeability and chemical resistance more than one magnitude greater than those of ordinary polyamide composite membranes.
