LaPO4: Ce3+ and LaPO4: Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphor layers have been deposited successfully on monodispersed and spherical SiO2 particles of different sizes ( 300, 500, 900 and 1200 nm) through a sol - gel process, resulting in the formation of core - shell structured SiO2@ LaPO4: Ce3+/ Tb3+ particles. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microcopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and general and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as lifetimes were used to characterize the resulting SiO2@ LaPO4: Ce3+/ Tb3+ samples. The XRD results demonstrate that the LaPO4: Ce3+, Tb3+ layers begin to crystallize on the SiO2 templates after annealing at 700 degrees C, and the crystallinity increases on raising the annealing temperature. The obtained core - shell phosphors have perfectly spherical shape with a narrow size distribution, non-agglomeration, and a smooth surface. The doped rare-earth ions show their characteristic emission in the core - shell phosphors, i.e. Ce3+ 5d - 4f and Tb3+5D4 - F-7(J) (J = 6 - 3) transitions, respectively. The PL intensity of the Tb3+ increased on increasing the annealing temperature and the SiO2 core particle size.

A sol-gel technique was used to prepare Gd2Ti2O7:Eu3+-coated submicron silica spheres (SiO2@Gd2Ti2O7:Eu3+). The resulted SiO2@Gd2Ti2O7:Eu3+ core-shell particles were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectra (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, as well as kinetic decays. The XRD results demonstrate that the Gd2Ti2O7:Eu3+ layers begin to crystallize on the SiO2 spheres after annealing at 800 degrees C and the crystallinity increases with raising the annealing temperature. The obtained core-shell phosphors have perfect spherical shape with narrow size distribution (average size similar to 620 nm), non-agglomeration, and smooth surface. The thickness of the Gd2Ti2O7:Eu3+ shells on the SiO2 cores could be easily tailored by varying the number of deposition cycles (60 nm for four deposition cycles). Under the irradiation of 310 nm ultraviolet, the SiO2@GdTi2O7:Eu3+ samples show strong emission of Eu3+.

A uniform nanolayer of europium-doped Gd2O3 was coated on the surface of preformed submicron silica spheres by a Pechini sol-gel process. The resulted SiO2@Gd2O3:Eu3+ core-shell structured phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as kinetic decays. The XRD results show that the Gd2O3:Eu3+ layers start to crystallize on the SiO2 spheres after annealing at 400 degrees C and the crystallinity increases with raising the annealing temperature. The core-shell phosphors possess perfect spherical shape with narrow size distribution (average size: 640 nm) and non-agglomeration. The thickness of the Gd2O3:Eu3+ shells on the SiO2 cores can be adjusted by changing the deposition cycles (70 nm for three deposition cycles). Under short UV excitation, the obtained SiO2@Gd2O3:Eu3+ particles show a strong red emission with D-5(0)-F-7(2) (610 nm) of Eu3+ as the most prominent group. The PL intensity of Eu3+ increases with increasing the annealing temperature and the number of coating cycles.

Y2O3:RE3+ (RE = Eu, Tb, Dy) porous nanotubes were first synthesized using carbon nanotubes as template. The morphology of the coated precursors and porous Y2O3:Eu3+ nanotubes was determined by scanning electron Microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the coating of precursors on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is continuous and the thickness is about 15 nm, after calcinated, the Y2O3:Eu3+ nanotubes are porous with the diameter size in the range of 50-80 nm and the length in micrometer scale. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed that the samples are cubic phase Y2O3 and the photoluminescence studies showed that the porous rare earth ions doped nanotubes possess characteristic emission of Eu3+, Tb3+, and Dy3+. This method may also provide a novel approach to produce other inorganic porous nanotubes used in catalyst and sensors.

The measurements of VUV-UV photoluminescence emission (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of rare earth ions activated strontium orthophosphate [Sr-3(PO4)(2):RE, RE = Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb] are performed. Whenever the samples are excited by VUV or UV light, the typical emission of Ce-3+,Ce- Sm3+, Eu3+, Eu2+ and Tb3+ ions can be observed in PL spectra, respectively. The charge transfer bands (CTBs) of Sm3+ and Eu3+ are found, respectively, peaking at 206 and 230nm. The absorption bands peaking in the region of 150-160 nm are assigned to the host lattice sensitization bands, i.e., the band-to-band transitions of PO43- grouping in Sr-3(PO4)(2). It is speculated that the first f-d transitions of Sm3+ (Eu3+), and the CTB of Tb3+ are, respectively, located around 165 (14 3) and 167 urn by means of VUV-UV PLE spectra and relational empirical formula, these f-d transitions or CT bands are included in the bands with the maxima at 150-160 nm, respectively. The valence change of europium from trivalent to divalent in strontium orthophosphate prepared in air is observe by VUV-UV PL and PLE spectra.

Organic-inorganic hybrid SiO2 xerogels were prepared by the sol-gel method under various preparation conditions and compositions by using tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (A-PS), (3-glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPS), organic acid (CH3COOH) and inorganic acids (HCl, HNO3, H2SO4) as the main precursors. Luminescence and FT-IR spectra were used to characterize the resulted hybrid SiO2 xerogels. The result of FT-IR spectrum shows that the xerogels are composed of non-crystalline -Si-O-Si- networks containing some organic groups such as -NH, -CH and -OH. Under the excitation of 365 nm, all the hybrid xerogels exhibit strong luminescence in the blue region, but the emission intensity and position depend on the starting precursor compositions to a large extent. Suitable amount of polyethylene glycol (PEG500 and PEG10000) in the hybrid xerogels can enhance the emission intensity. Additionally, the emission intensity of the hybrid xerogels increases with heat treatment temperature in the range of ambient to 200degreesC, and vacuum condition is also able to enhance the emission intensity.

Silica xerogels prepared by sol-gel method show blue emission under UV excitation with a smaller Stokes shift. The luminescent properties have been investigated under various preparation conditions and compositions. The silica xerogels show similar luminescent properties when using C2H5OH and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvents, which are very different from those when using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as solvent, i.e., a red shift of excitation and emission has been observed in the latter case. The emission intensity of the silica xerogels also depends on the water content and pH of the starting reaction solution. The introduction of organic group (-CH3) in the silica xerogel modifies the network structure and further changes their luminescence properties. Heat treatment results in the decomposition of the organic (-SiCH3) groups, which eliminates the old luminescent centers and produces new luminescent centers in longer wavelength simultaneously. Infrared emission at 1.54 mu m excited optically and electrically from an erbium organic compound tris(acetylacetonato)(1,10-phenanthroline) erbium [Er(acac)(3)(phen)] is observed. The rare-earth complex is dispersed into a polymer matrix of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) to fabricate an electroluminescent (EL) device with an ITO/PVK:Er(acac)(3)(phen)/Al:Li/Ag structure, where ITO represents indium-tin-oxide-coated glass. The device shows infrared EL emission at 1.54 mu m, which suggests a simple and cheap method to obtain a light source for 1.54-mu m-wavelength devices in optical communications. When the aggregation of C-60 is arranged in mono-dispersed state on the ITO substrate, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra are observed clearly. These emission peaks are attributed to recombination of self - trapped excitons, the zero-phonon exciton (R-0) and its phonon replicas.

When CaS:Sm3+, Eu2+ is excited at 476.5 nm (Ar+), the emission spectra taken at room temperature and at 77 K are different, indicating that there are two competitive energy transfer processes-Sm3+ --> Eu2+ and Eu2+ --> Sm3+ with phonon participation. So, the luminescence intensity of Sm3+ increases first, and then decreases as the concentration of Eu2+ is increasing. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we report the optical properties of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in hydrosols and those of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in organosols in which the surfaces of the particles are coated by a layer of organic surfactant molecules. The photoluminescence spectra of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles in the hydrosols and organosols in different conditions were measured and discussed. We conclude that the surface structure of the SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles affects their optical properties strongly. The oxygen deficiencies on the surface of SnO2 semiconductor nanoparticles play an important role in the optical properties. The surface modification of the particles effectively removes the surface defects of the particles and enhances the intensity of luminescence.

The multilayer Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of pr,ly 3-(2-(5-chlorobenzotriazole)ethyl) thiophene (PCBET) blended with amphibious arachidic acid (AA) were prepared and characterized. The photoluminescence intensity of the blend film was enhanced as the AA increased by a certain amount. The PCBET excimers were not formed in the blend LB films.

A field population of Ulva pseudocurvata Koeman et C. Hoek (hereafter termed Ulva) at Sylt Island (North Sea, Germany) exhibited biweekly peaks of gametophytic reproduction during the colder seasons and approximately weekly peaks during summer. The reproductive events lasted 1-5 d and were separated from each other by purely vegetative phases. Under constant conditions in the laboratory, a free-running rhythm was observed with reproductive peaks occurring approximately every 7 d. When artificial moonlight was provided every 4 weeks, fewer reproductive events occurred, and the reproductive rhythm became synchronized to the environmental artificial moonlight rhythm. In the laboratory, apical disks were entirely converted into reproductive tissue after 8 d cultivation, while almost all basal disks stayed vegetative, which prevented the entire loss of the vegetative thallus during reproductive events. Seasonal size reduction of the thallus occurred from late autumn onward and was determined to be controlled by a genuine photoperiodic response, since size reduction could be induced from May onward by experimental short-day (SD) treatment but was prevented in a long-day (LD) or night-break regime (NB). A daily fine-tuning occurred with gamete release early in the morning at the first sign of daylight, following an obligatory dark ("night") period of at least 1 h duration. No release took place if the overnight dark phase was replaced by continuous light. Blue, green, or red light all triggered gamete release after a dark phase at an irradiance of 0.1 mu mol photons . m(-2) .s(-1), while 0.001 mu mol photons . m(-2) . s(-1) was equivalent to a dark control.
