Simultaneous nitrobenzene and phenol wet air oxidation was investigated in a stainless autoclave at temperature range of 180-220 ° C and 1.0 MPa oxygen partial pressure. Compared with the single oxidation of nitrobenzene under the same conditions, the presence of phenol in the reaction media greatly improved the removal efficiency of nitrobenzene. The effect of temperature on the reaction was studied. Phenol was considered as a type of initiator in the nitrobenzene oxidation. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The surfactant assistant syntheses of sulfonic acid functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilicas with large pores are reported. A one-step condensation of tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) with 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyi)ethane (BTME) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) in highly acidic medium was performed in the presence of triblock copolymer Pluronic P123 and inorganic salt as additive. During the condensation process, thiol (-SH) group was in situ oxidized to sulfonic acid (-SO3H) by hydrogen peroxide (30 wt % H2O2). X-ray diffraction studies along with nitrogen and water sorption analyses reveal the formation of stable, highly hydrophobic, and well-ordered hexagonal mesoscopic structures in a wide range of -CH2CH2-concentrations in the mesoporous framework. The resultant materials were also investigated by Si-29 MAS and C-13 CP MAS NMR, thermogravimetric analyses, UV-Raman spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The role of the bridged organic group on the hydrothermal stability of the mesoporous materials was established, which revealed an enhancement in hydrothermal stability of the materials with incorporation of the bridged organic groups in the network. The catalytic performance of -SO3H functionalized mesoporous materials was investigated in the esterification of ethanol with acetic acid, and the results demonstrate that the ethane groups incorporated in the mesoporous framework have a positive influence on the catalytic behavior of the materials.
Enhancement of the catalytic performance of supported-metal catalysts by pretreatment of the support

We report an interesting finding that the catalytic performance of supported Ag/SiO2 catalysts toward selective catalytic oxidation of CO in hydrogen at low temperatures can be greatly enhanced by pretreatment of the SiO2 support before catalyst preparation. Calcination of SiO2 at appropriate temperatures preferentially removes the H-bonded SiOH, which results in the highly dispersive Ag/SiO2 catalyst and thus improves the catalytic performance. CO hydrogenation to light alkenes was carried out on manganese promoted iron catalysts prepared by coprecipitation and sol-gel techniques. Addition of manganese in the range of 1-4 mol.% by means of coprecipitation could improve notably the percentage of C-2 (=) similar to C-4 (=) in the products, but it was not so efficient when the sol-gel method was employed. XRD and H-2-TPR measurements showed that the catalyst samples giving high C-2 (=) similar to C-4 (=) yields possessed ultra. ne particles in the form of pure alpha-(Fe1-xMnx)(2)O-3, and high quality in lowering the reduction temperature of the iron oxide. Furthermore, these samples displayed deep extent of carburization and different surface procedures to the others in the tests of Temperature Programmed Surface Carburization (TPSC). The different surface procedures of these samples were considered to have close relationship with the evolving of surface oxygen. It was also suggested that for the catalysts with high C-2 (=) similar to C-4 (=) yields, the turnover rate of the active site could be kept at a relatively high level due to the improved reducing and carburizing capabilities. Consequently, there would be a large number of sites for CO adsorption/dissociation and an enhanced carburization environment on the catalyst surface, so that the process of hydrogenation could be suppressed relatively to a low level. As a result, the percentage of the light alkenes in the products could be raised.

The epoxidation of styrene catalyzed by a reaction-controlled phase transfer catalyst [(C18H37(30%)+C16H33(70%))N(CH3)(3))(3)](3)-[PW4O16] with H2O2 in a biphasic medium was investigated. Under certain conditions, the selectivity for styrene oxide was 95%, the conversion of styrene based on H2O2 was 85%, and the reaction time was less than 1 h. During the reaction, this catalyst powder formed soluble active species by the action of H2O2, was recovered as a precipitate, and was reused after H2O2 was used up. After two times recycling, the catalyst kept almost the same activity.
