Two series of monomers, namely n-1-bromo-(4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy]alkanes (Bn, n = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10) and N-n-[4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy]alkyl diethanolamines (Cn, n = 3, 5, 6, 10), were synthesized and characterized. Their thermal behaviour was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X-ray diffractometry (WAXD) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) equipped with a hot stage. The results showed that the Bns (n greater than or equal to 6) exhibit monotropic nematic liquid crystalline behaviour; no liquid crystalline phase was found for the Bns (n < 6), while for the Cns, enantiotropic smectic liquid crystallinity for n = 5, 6, 10 was seen, and for n = 3 monotropic smectic phases were found. This different phase behaviour between Bn and Cn compounds is attributed to their different end groups. The FTIR analysis of Cn indicated that there exists an intermolecular hydrogen bond between hydroxy groups, so that more stable liquid crystalline phase are formed. The effect of the length of the flexible chain on the thermal behaviour is also discussed.

The synthesis and characterization of side-chain liquid crystalline (LC) polyacrylates containing para-nitroazobenzene (Pn) as mesogenic groups were described. Homopolymers with 3 and 4 carbon atoms in the spacers were non-LC polymers; for homopolymers with 6 carbon atoms in the spacer, nematic LC behavior was observed. Copolymers with acrylic acid as one component exhibited an S-Ad phase according to the WAXD results which showed the d/l of 1.4-1.54 for the copolymers with 3, 4, and 6 carbon atoms in the spacers. Considering the molecular structure as well as the WAXD results of the copolymers, the possible molecular arrangement in the smectic Sad phase was proposed, in which the smectic layers were composed of the antiparallel mesogens and the antiparallel arrangement was considered to be enhanced due to the H bond between - COOH and - NO2. The stress-induced orientational phenomena of Pn in the LC states was also discussed. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

A new comblike polymer host for polymer electrolyte was synthesized by reacting monomethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol) with poly(vinyl methyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) and endcapping the residual carboxylic acid with methanol. Butanone was selected as a solvent for the esterification in order to obtain a completely soluble product. The synthesis process was traced through by LR. Compared with the model compounds, the presumed structure of this comblike polymer has been proved to be valid by C-13 NMR The comb polymer is a white rubbery solid. It can be dissolved in butanone and THF, and manifests good film forming ability.

In order to raise the room temperature ionic conductivity and improve the mechanical strength of a PEO-based polymer electrolyte, a non-crystalline two-component epoxy network was synthesized by curing diglycidyl ether of polyethylene glycol (DGEPEG) with triglycidyl ether of glycerol (TGEG) in the presence of LiClO4 salt, which acts in this system as both a ring opening catalyst and a source of ionic carrier. The structure of the precursors, the curing process and the cured films have been characterized by C-13 NMR, IR, DSC and ionic conductivity measurement techniques. The electrolyte system exhibits an ionic conductivity as high as similar to 10(-5) S/cm at 25 degrees C and is mechanically self-supportable. The dependence of ionic conductivity was investigated as a function of temperature, salt content, MW of PEG segment in DGEPEG and the proportion of DGEPEG in DGEPEG/TGEG ratio.

In an attempt to explore the effect of structural multiplicity of polymers on the mechanism of radiation crosslinking, the adaptability of the Charlesby-Pinner's equation and its various modified versions are examined. It is recognized that both chemical and morphological multiplicity of polymer structure results in the multiplicity of crosslinking mechanism, and that any single equation can only be applicable to a certain step of the whole radiation process.

This paper describes the mode I delamination behaviour of a unidirectional carbon-fibre/poly(phenylene ether ketone)(PEK-C) composite. Tests have been performed on double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. Several data reduction schemes are used to obtain the critical strain energy release rate, G(IC), and the results are compared. It is shown that when using a DCB test to determine the fracture toughness, corrections must be employed. The experimental methods have been described for ascertaining the correction terms, and the results are consistent after modification. Some of the authors' results are different from those of other authors, particularly the negative correction term for crack length, the larger exponent (n > 3) in the relationship C = Ra(n), and decrements of flexural modulus with the crack growth when using the simple beam theory to predict the bending behaviour of DCB specimens. The possible reasons are discussed.

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of (p-carboxyphenoxy)-tri(2,4-di-tert-pentyl phenoxy)phthalocyanine copper(II) (asyCuPc) are prepared; the associated forms of the compound in chloroform solution and the particular orientation of asyCuPc molecular macrocycles in LB films is determined by polarized UV-VIS.

SERRS of copper tetrakis(2,4-ditert-penthyl phenoxy) Phthalocyanine LB monolayer on Ag island film and RRS of the compound in solid state have been obtained. On comparison between the spectra, it is proposed that the macrocycle of the molecule on the Ag substrate is oriented parallel to the surface.

The dependence of morphology and properties on film-forming conditions is described for the symmetrically substituted copper tetra-4-(2, 4-di-t-amylphenoxy) phthalocyanine (tapCuPc) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The effects of LB film-forming conditions (such as the surface pressure, pH value and the concentrations of spreading solutions) on film quality were studied with the help of a UV-visible spectrophotometer and a transmission electron microscope. Transmission electron microscopy photographs of the surface morphology of tapCuPc LB films show that a smooth and homogeneous surface structure can be obtained under optimum film-forming conditions.
