A series of eight new polyquinolines and polyanthrazolines with pyrrole isomeric units in main chain were synthesized and characterized. The new polymers showed high glass transition temperatures (T-g = 242-339 degreesC) and excellent thermal stability (T-5% = 398-536 degreesC in air, TGA). Compared to the series of polyanthrazolines, the series of polyquinolines exhibited higher thermal stability, better solubility in common organic solvents, and lower maximum absorption wavelengths (lambda(max)(a)). Polyanthrazolines with 2,5-pyrrole linkage showed an unusually high lambda(max)(a) (565 nm) and small band gap (2.02 eV). All polymers in solution had low photoluminescence quantum yields between 10(-2%) and 10(-5%) and excited-state lifetimes of 0.28-1.29 ns. The effects of molecular structure, especially pyrrole linkage structures, on the electronic structure, thermodynamics, and some of the optical properties of the polymers were explored. A model of hydrogen bonds in the main chain of the polymers was suggested to explain the difference in the properties of the isomer polymers. In addition, a polyquinoline (PBM) was chosen to examine the proton conductivity; the result indicated that the PBM/H3PO4 complex exhibited a high conductivity of 1.5 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 157 degreesC.

An aromatic polyimide was synthesized via a one-step polycondensation reaction between biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) in p-chlorophenol. The polyimide (BPDA-ODA) solution dopes were spun into fibers by means of dry-jet wet spinning. The as-spun fibers were drawn and treated in heating tubes for improving the mechanical properties. The thermal treatment on the fibers resulted in a relatively high tensile strength and modulus. Thermal mechanical analysis (TMA) was employed to study the linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA) spectra showed that the BPDA-ODA fibers possessed an excellent property of thermo-oxidative degradation resistance. The sonic modulus E-s of the polyimide fibers was measured.

A facile and rapid polycondensation reaction of disodium bisphenol A with bis(chlorophthalimide)s was preformed with a domestic microwave oven in o-dichlorobenzene by phase-transfer catalysis. The polymerization reactions, in comparison with conventional heating polycondensation, proceeded rapidly and were completed within 25 min. The polymerizations gave the corresponding poly(ether imide)s with inherent viscosities of 0.55-0.92 dL g(-1). The effects of various factors on the polymerization, such as the amount of the catalyst, the reaction time, and the microwave power were studied. The properties of the polymers were briefly characterized.

A new high-performance material, poly(sulfone-imide) was prepared by Ni(0)-catalyzed coupling of aromatic dichlorides containing imide structure and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenylsulfone. The copolymers were produced with high yield and moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.52-1.13 dL/g. Wide-angle X-ray diffractograms revealed that the polymers were amorphous. Most of the polymers exhibited good solubility and could be readily dissolved in various solvents such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone(NMP) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). These polysulfone-imides had glass-transition temperatures between 317 and 345 degreesC and 10% weight loss temperatures in the range of 450476 degreesC in nitrogen atmosphere. The tough polymer films, obtained by casting from cresol solution, had a tensile strength range of 21 158 MPa and a tensile modulus range of 2.1-3.3 GPa.

Crystallization behavior, structural development and morphology evolution in a series of diblock copolymers Of poly(L-lactide)-blockpoly(ethylene glycol) (PLLA-b-PEG) were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, polarized optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. In these copolymers, both blocks are crystallizable and biocompatible. It was interesting that these PLLA-b-PEG diblock copolymers could form spherulites with banded textures, which was undercooling dependent. Single crystals with an abundance of screw dislocations were also observed via AFM. Such results indicated that these ringed spherulites and single crystals were formed during the crystallization of the PLLA blocks.

Submonolayer thin films of a three-ring bent-core (that is, banana-shaped) compound, m-bis(4-n-octyloxystyryl)benzene (m-OSB), were prepared by the vacuum-deposition method, and their morphologies, structures, and phase behavior were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The films have island shapes ranging from compact elliptic or circular patterns at low temperatures (below 40 degreesC) to branched patterns at high temperatures (above 60 degreesC). This shape evolution is contrary to the prediction based on the traditional diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) theory. AFM observations revealed that two different mechanisms governed the film growth, in which the compact islands were formed via a dewetting-like behavior, while the branched islands diffusion-mediated. It is suggested m-OSB forms a two-dimensional, liquid crystal at the low-temperature substrate that is responsible for the unusual formation of compact islands. All of the monolayer islands are unstable and apt to transform to slender bilayer crystals at room temperature. This phase transition results from the peculiar molecular shape and packing of the bent-core molecules and is interpreted as escaping from macroscopic net polarization by the formation of an antiferroelectric alignment.

An efficient white light-emitting polymer was developed with blue polyfluorene (PFO) chemically doped with orange fluorescent 1, 8-naphthalimide moieties. The emission spectrum can be easily tuned by varying the content of 1, 8-naphthalimide moieties. A white polymeric light-emitting diode (WPLED) with a structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/the complex of (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT)/polymer/Ca/Al showed a current efficiency of 5.3 cd/A and a power efficiency of 2.8 Lm/W at 6 V with the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates at (0.25,0.35). Moreover, the WPLED from the copolymer showed a very stable white light emission at different driving voltage and brightness. The CIE coordinates of the WPLED were (0.25, 0.35), (0.26, O.36), and (0.26, 0.36) under driving voltages of 6, 8, and 10 V, corresponding to the brightness of 82, 3555, and 7530 cd/m(2), respectively. This approach for realization of white light emission is promising over the polymer blending system in terms of both efficiency and color stability.

A modified Wittig polycondensation was developed by replacing the bulky -PPh3 with -PBu3 ylide. Our studies suggested that the modified polymerization dramatically enhances trans-selectivity due to the decreased 1.3-steric interaction between butyl chain and triphenylamine group, together with the 1,2-steric interaction between the phenyl ring of the ylide and the triphenylamine group of the aldehyde. Moreover, the method also enhances high-molecular weight products by increasing the activity and solubility of the ylide.

To simplify the fabrication of multilayer light-emitting diodes, we prepared a p-phenylenevinylene-based polymer capped with crosslinkable styrene through a Wittig reaction. Insoluble poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative (PPVD) films were prepared by a thermal treatment. The photoluminescence and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorbance of crosslinked films and noncrosslinked films were studied. We also studied the solvent resistance of crosslinked PPV films with UV-vis absorption spectra and atomic force microscopy. Double-layer devices using crosslinked PPVD as an emitting layer, 2-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) in poly(methyl methacrylate) as an electron-transporting layer, and calcium as a cathode were fabricated. A maximum luminance efficiency of 0.70 cd/A and a maximum brightness of 740 cd/m(2) at 16 V were demonstrated. A 12-fold improvement in the luminance efficiency with respect to that of single-layer devices was realized.

A conjugated poly(p-CN-phenylenevinylene) (PCNPV) containing both electron-donating triphenylamine units and electron-withdrawing cyano groups was prepared via Knoevenagel condensation in a good yield. Gel permeation chromatography suggested that the soluble polymer had a very high weight-average molecular weight of 309,000. A bright and saturated red emission was observed under UV excitation in solution and film. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the polymer presented quasi-reversible oxidation with a relatively low potential because of the triphenylamine unit. A single-layer indium tin oxide/PCNPV/Mg-Ag device emitted a bright red light (633 nm).

Novel PPV derivatives (PCA8-PV and PCA8-MEHPV) containing N-phenyl-carbazole units on the back-bone were successfully synthesized by the Wittig polycondensation of 3,6-bisformyl-N-(4-octyloxy-phenyl)carbazole with the corresponding tributyl phosphonium salts in good yields. The newly formed and dominant trans vinylene double bonds were confirmed by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. The polymers (with (M) over bar (w) of 6289 for PCA8-PV and 7387 for PCA8-MEHPV) were soluble in common organic solvents and displayed high thermal stability (T(g)s are 110.7 degreesC for PCA8-PV and 92.2 degreesC for PCA8-MEHPV, respectively) because of the incorporation of the N-phenyl-carbazole units. Cyclic voltammetry investigations (onsets: 0.8 V for PCA8-PV and 0.7 V for PCA8-MEHPV) suggested that the polymers possess enhanced hole injection/transport properties, which can be also attributed to the N-phenyl-carbazole units on the backbone. Both the single-layer and the double-layer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that used the polymers as the active layer emitted a greenish-blue or bluish-green light (the maximum emissions located 494 nm for PCA8-PV and 507 nm for PCA8-MEHPV, respectively).

Novel hole-transporting molecules containing 1,4-bis(carbazolyl)benzene as a central unit and different numbers of diphenylamine moieties as the peripheral groups have been synthesized and characterized. These compounds are thermally stable with high glass transition temperatures of 141-157 degreesC and exhibit chemically reversible redox processes. Their amorphous state stability and hole transport properties can be significantly improved by increasing the number of diphenylamine moieties in the outer part and by controlling the symmetry of the carbazole-based molecules. These compounds can be used as good hole-tran sporting materials for organic electroluminescent (EL) devices. The device performance based on tri- and tetra-substituted carbazole derivatives is comparable to that of a typical 4,4'-bis[N-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino] biphenyl (NPB)-based device.

A new kind of polyfluorene containing oxadiazole as the side chain was synthesized. The introduction of oxadiazole moiety as more bulky group prevents the aggregation and reduces the crystallinity of the polymers. Efficient intramolecular energy transfer from oxadiazole moiety to the conjugated backbone has been realized, leading to 70% improvement of photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the designed polymers. Compared with PAF, the PFOXD exhibits significant improvement in electroluminescence properties, with luminous efficiency of 0.8 cd/A and maximum luminance of 1800 cd/m(2).
