A new mono-substituted titanocene, (eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl) [eta(5)-(1-(4-methoxyphenyl) cyclohexyl) cyclopentadienyl] dichlorotitanium (I), has been prepared via a novel modified synthesis, and its X-ray crystal structure has been determined. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with cell constants a=0.968 0(5) nm, b=1.284 6(5) nm, c=1.694 4(6) nm, Z=4, R=0.066. The I/methylaluminoxane (MAO) catalyst system produces at different polymerization temperatures either an isotactic or a syndiotactic polypropylene, both of which have the combined influence of enantiomorphic-site control and chain-end control, or an atactic polypropylene controlled by Bernoullian propagation mechanism.

Based on unsteady diffusion kinetics, polyethylene(PE)-graft-polystyrene (PS) copolymers were designed and synthesized with a heterogeneous high yield titanium-based catalyst by copolymerization of ethylene with a PS-macromonomer using 1-hexene as a short chain agent to promote the incorporation of the PS-macromonomer. The presence of 1-hexene facilitated the diffusion of the PS-macromonomer, giving rise to the significantly increased incorporation of the PS-macromonomer. Compatibilization of blends of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) with the PE-g-PS copolymer were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).

Poly(styrene-acrylic acid)-lanthanide (Ln.PSAA) and poly(ethylene-acrylic acid)-neodymium (NdPEAA) complexes have been prepared and characterized. The infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate that the lanthanide complexes possess the bidentate carboxylate structure Ln-O-C(R)-O (see structure B in text). The catalytic behavior of the complexes has been described. The catalytic activities of Nd.PSAA and Nd.PEAA are much greater than that of the corresponding low molecular weight catalyst for butadiene polymerization. The activities of various individual lanthanide elements are quite different from one another. Neodymium shows the highest activity. Europium, samarium and the heavy elements exhibit very low or no activities. The cis-1,4 content of the polybutadiene obtained is not affected by different lanthanide elements in the series. The complex with the intermediate content of the functional group has a higher activity than the others. The polymer-supported lanthanide complexes having different constitutions have different catalytic activities. When the molar ratio of lanthanide to the functional group is ca. 0.2, the activity of the complex is in the optimum state. The activity is influenced by the dispersion of the lanthanide metal immobilized on the polymer chain. Catalytic activity can be improved by adding other metals to the catalyst system.

The complex of (CH3Cp)2Yb . DME (DME = dimethoxyethane) has been synthesized by the reduction with metallic sodium of the corresponding chloride (CH3CP)2YbCl. (CH3CP)2Yb . DME crystallized from DME in the monoclinic space group Cm, with cell constants a = 11.068(3), b = 12.338(4), c = 12.479(4) angstrom; beta = 100.51(2)-degrees, V = 1675(l) angstrom3, and D0 = 1.66 g/cm3 for Z = 4. Least-squares refinement of 1420 unique observed reflections led to final R of 0.0487. This complex can be used as a catalyst for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA).

The ignition processes for the catalytic partial oxidation of methane (POM) to synthesis gas over oxidic nickel catalyst (NiO/Al2O3), reduced nickel catalyst (Ni-0/Al2O3), and Pt-promoted oxidic nickel catalyst (Pt-NiO/Al2O3) were studied by the temperature-programmed surface reaction (TPSR) technique. The complete oxidation of methane usually took place on the NiO catalyst during the CH4/O-2 reaction, even with a pre-reduced nickel catalyst, and Ni-0 is inevitably first oxidized to NiO if the temperature is below the ignition temperature. It is above a certain temperature that Ni-0 is formed again, which leads to the start of the POM. The POM can be initiated at a much lower temperature on a Pt-NiO catalyst because of Pt promotion of the reduction of NiO. The POM in a fluidized bed can be easily initiated due to the addition of Pt.

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) consisting of multi-layer electrodes provide higher performance than those with the traditional electrode. The new electrode structure includes a hydrophilic thin film and a traditional catalyst layer. A decal transfer method was used to apply the thin film to the Nafion(R) membrane. Results show that the performance of a cell with the hydrophilic thin film is obviously enhanced. A cell with the optimal thin film electrode structure operating at I M CH3OH, 2 atm oxygen and 90degreesC yields a current density of 100 mA/cm(2) at 0.53 V cell voltage. The peak power density is 120 mW/cm(2). The performance stability of a cell in a short-term life operation was also increased when the hydrophilic thin film was employed. A novel graphitic-nanofilament-(GNF-) supported Ru-Ba catalyst is prepared and used in ammonia synthesis reaction. The Ru-Ba/GNFs catalyst shows remarkably high activity and stability for ammonia synthesis, which can be attributed to high purity and graphitization of GNFs with unique structure. TEM micrographs of the Ru-Ba/GNFs catalysts show that Ru metal particles uniformly disperse on the outer wall of GNFs, and the particles become bigger than that before ammonia synthesis reaction after 50 h of operation at 500degreesC and 7.0 MPa, probably due to the Ru crystals covered by promoter and support materials and/or sintering of Ru crystals. Ammonia synthesis over ruthenium catalysts supported on different carbon materials using Ba or K compounds as promoters has been investigated. Ba(NO3)(2), KOH, and KNO3 are used as the promoter or promoter precursor, and activated carbon (AC), activated carbon fiber (ACF). and carbon molecular sieve (CMS) are used as the support. The activity measurement for ammonia synthesis was carried out in a flow micro-reactor under mild conditions: 350-450 degreesC and 3.0 MPa. Results show that KOH promoter was more effective than KNO3. and that Ba(NO3)(2) was the most effective promoter among the three. The roles of promoters can be divided into the electronic modification of ruthenium, the neutralization of surface functional groups on the carbon support and the ruthenium precursor. The catalyst with AC as the support gave the highest ammonia concentration in the effluent among the supports used, while the catalyst with ACF as the support showed the highest turnover-frequency (TOF) value. It seems that the larger particles of Ru on the carbon supports are more active for ammonia synthesis in terms of TOF value. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A Cu-Zn-Al methanol catalyst combined with HZSM-5 was used for dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis from a syngas containing nitrogen, which was produced by air-partial oxidation of methane (air-POM). Air-POM occurred at 850 degreesC, 0.8 MPa, CH4/air/H2O/CO2 ratio of 1/2.4/0.8/0.4 over a Ni-based catalyst modified by magnesia and lanthanum oxide with 96% CH4 conversion and constantly gave syngas with a H-2/CO ratio of 2/1 during a period of 450 h. The obtained N-2-containing syngas was used directly for DME synthesis. About 90% CO per-pass conversion, 78% DME selectivity and 70% DME yield could be achieved during 450 h stability testing under the pressure of 5.0 MPa. the temperature of 240 degreesC and the space velocity of 1000 h(-1). With addition of methanol in acetic acid solvent, m-phenoxytoluene could be oxidized to m-phenoxybenzaldehyde selectively by a cobalt bromide catalyst. Paratemters such as the ratio of Co/Br and the reaction time of m-phenoxytoluene oxidation as well as visible spectra of cobalt bromide in acetic acid/methanol solvents, were also investigated. Addition of methanol caused the oxidation of aldehydes to proceed more slowly than it did solely in acetic acid solvent. The decrease of cobaltous-multibromides in acetic acid/methanol solvents was responsible for the improvement in the selective oxidation of m-phenoxytoluene. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. In this work, high-surface supported PtRu/C were prepared with Ru(NO)(NO3)(3) and [Pt(H2NCH2CH2NH2)(2)]Cl-2 as the precursors and hydrogen as a reducing agent. XRD and TEM analyses showed that the PtRu/C catalysts with different loadings possessed small and homogeneous metal particles. Even at high metal loading (40 wt.% Pt, 20 wt.% Ru) the mean metal particle size is less than 4 nm. Meanwhile, the calculated Pt crystalline lattice parameter and Pt (220) peak position indicated that the geometric structure of Pt was modified by Ru atoms. Among the prepared catalysts, the lattice parameter of 40-20 wt.% PtRu/C contract most. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA), CO stripping and single direct methanol fuel cell tests jointly suggested that the 40-20 wt.% PtRu/C catalyst has the highest electrochemical activity for methanol oxidation.
