The heterobimetallic complexes Cp * Rh(CN Bu-t)(EC5H4)(2)Fe [E = S(2),Se(3), Te(4)] have been synthesized by the reaction of halfsandwich rhodium complex Cp * Rh(CNtBu) Cl-2 with Fe(C5H4ELi)(2). 2THF. Oxidation of 2,3 by AgBF4 to give ferrocenium - type salts [Cp * Rh(CNtBu) (EC5H4)(2)Fe] (+) [BF4] (-) [E = S(5),Se(6)] also occurs readily. The new complexes have been characterized by MS IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis.

Water insoluble poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) was micronized into narrowly distributed stable nanoparticles. The biodegradation of such PCL nanoparticles in the presence of the enzyme, Lipase PS, was monitored by using laser light scattering because the scattering intensity is directly related to the particle concentration. The PCL and enzyme concentration dependence of the biodegradation rate supports a heterogeneous catalytic kinetics in which we have introduced an additional equilibrium between the inactive and active enzyme/substrate complexes. The initial rate equation derived on the basis of this mechanism was used to successfully explain the influence of surfactant, pH and temperature on the enzymatic biodegradation. Our results confirmed that both the adsorption and the enzymatic catalysis were important for the biodegradation of the PCL nanoparticles. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The solution structures of diamagnetic lanthanide (III) complexes of DTPA-BIN (Ln = La, Y, Lu, Sc) have been investigated by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and 2D NMR. For each complex, two or more species of asymmetric conformations with little distinction were identified at room temperature. And their solution structures vary with the radius of the central metals. NMR spectra support the hypothesis that Sc3+ with smaller radius formed an eight-coordinated structure with DTPA-BIN, La3+ with larger radius formed nine- or ten-coordinated structures with DTPA-BIN, and Y (DTPA-BIN) and Lu (DTPA-BIN) had nine-coordinated solution structures. The solution structure of Gd (DTPA-BIN) was obtained from the similarity of radius between Gd3+ and Y3+, which is a nine-coordinated structure formed by three nitrogens, three acetate oxygens, two acetyl oxygens, one water molecule and a gadolinium(III) cation.

An organic-inorganic hybrid solid, (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Dark green crystals crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group Pna21, a = 24.164(5), b = 18.281(4), c = 11.877(2) Angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V= 5247(2) Angstrom (3), Z = 4, lambda (MoK alpha) = 0.71073 Angstrom (R(F) = 0.0331 for 5353 reflections). Data were collected on a Siemens P4 four-circle diffractometer at 293 K in the range 1.69 degrees < theta < 25.04 degrees using the omega -scan technique. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by full-matrix least squares on F-2 using SHELXL-93. The structure of this compound consists of discrete (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26 clusters, constructed from beta -octamolybdate subunits ((Mo8O26)(4-)) covalently bonded to two (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2+) coordination complexes via bridging oxo groups that connect two adjacent molybdenum sites. By comparing the phosphorescence spectra of Gd(acac)(3) (acac=acetylacetone), Gd(TFacac)3 (TFacac=1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone), the effects of fluorine replacement of hydrogen on the triplet state energy of the ligands were revealed. Fluorine can lower the triplet state energy of Hacac and make it more suitable for energy transfer towards the D-5(4) state of terbium. Organic electroluminescent devices (OELDs) with the corresponding trivalent terbium complexes as emissive layers were fabricated. Triple-layer-type devices with a structure of glass substrate/ITO (indium tin oxide)/PVK [poly(N-vinylcarbazole)]/PVK : Tb complex: PBD [2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole]/PBD/Al exhibit bright green luminescence upon applying a dc voltage. The luminance of a device with Tb(TFacac)(3)phen (1,10-phenanthroline) and Tb( TFacac) 3 as emissive layer is higher than that of the corresponding devices with Tb(acac)(3)(phen) and Tb(acac)(3) as emissive layers. The EL device with Tb(TFacac)(3)(phen) as emitter exhibits characteristic emission of Tb3+ ions with a maximum luminance of 58 cd m(-2) at 25 V.

The half-sandwich tert-butyl cyclopentadienyl lanthanoid complexes {[Cp ' Ln(THF)](2)(mu (2)-Cl)(2)(mu (3)-Cl)(3)Na(THF)}(n) [Cp ' = eta (5)-' BuC5H4; Ln = Nd (1a), Sm (1b), Gd (1c), Yb (1d)] are prepared by the reaction of anhydrous lanthanoid trichloride, LnCl(3), with NaCp ' in THF solution. Complex 1b reacts with Na2Se5 to give hexanuclear samarium polyselenide complexes [Na(THF)(6)](2)[Cp-6' SM6(mu (6)-Se)(mu -Se-2)(6)] (2). An analogous cyclopentadienyl neodymium polyselenide complex [Li(THF)(4)](2)[Cp6Nd6(mu (6)-Se)(mu -Se-2)(6)] (3) is synthesized by the reaction of [CpNdCl2. 2LiCl . 5THF] with Na2Se5 in THF solution. The molecular structures of 1a and 2 were determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Complex 2 contains an interstitial selenium atom which is coordinated with six samarium atoms. Electrospray ionization (ESI) and tandem mass spectrometry have been used to investigate the gas-phase interactions of five metal ions and seven dipeptides. For silver ion, two complexes ([M+Ag](+) and [2M+Ag](+)) were obtained as well as the one complex ([2M+Met-H](+)) for transition-metal ions. Upon collision activation, there is an obvious difference in MS/MS data between metal ion complex and the protonated molecule. The fragment pathway of each complex is related to the structures of dipeptide and the nature of metal ion which suggest that there are several interaction between the metal ions and dipeptides in gas phase.

The reactions of half-sandwich diselenolate Mo and W complexes (CpM)-M-#(NO)(SePh)(2) (M = Mo; Cp-# = Cp' (1a), MeCp (1b); M = W; Cp-# = Cp' (1c)) with (Norb)Mo(CO)(4), Ni(COD)(2) and Fe(CO)(5) have been investigated. Treatment of (1a), (1b) and (1c) with (Norb)Mo(CO)(4) in PhMe gave the bimetallic complexes: Cp'Mo(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)Mo(CO)(4) (2a), MeCpMo(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)Mo(CO)(4) (2b) and Cp'W(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)Mo(CO)(4) (2c) in moderate yields. Irradiation of (1a) and (1c) in the presence of Fe(CO)(5) gave heterobimetallic complexes Cp'Mo(CO)(mu -SePh)(2)Fe(CO)(3) (3a) and Cp'W(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)Fe(CO)(3) (3c). Ni(COD)(2) reacts with two equivalents of (1a), (1b) and (1c) to give [Cp'Mo(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)](2)Ni (4a), [MeCpMo(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)](2)Ni (4b) and [Cp'W(NO)(mu -SePh)(2)](2)Ni (4c) in good yields. The new heterobimetallic complexes were characterized by i.r., H-1-n.m.r., C-13-n.m.r. and EI-MS spectroscopy.

Three compounds of metalloporphyrins were studied using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The bonding power between substitutional phenyl and porphyrin cycle and the coordinate conditions of metalloporphyrins with imidazole were discussed. The experimental result indicated that the bonding power between substitutional phenyl and porphyrin cycle in metalloporphyrins became weak from Mn, Fe to Co. The complexes abundances formed by metallophorphyrin with imidazole were stronger with the increase of the ligand concentration. At the same ligand concentration, the abundance of the complexes was intensified gradually and the stability of the ligands was become stronger from Mn, Fe to Co.

Binary complexes of europium and terbium with N-propyl-4-carboxyphthalimide (NP) were prepared and characterized. The luminescence behaviors of the lanthanide complexes as well as their doped silica-based composites were investigated by fluorescence spectra. The results indicated that the lanthanide complexes showed fewer emission lines and slightly lower intensities in silica matrix than that of corresponding pure complexes. The lifetimes of the lanthanide complexes became longer when they were incorporated in silica matrix. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Surfactant adsorption on metal surfaces has been used to limit the activity of the electrode surface and to stabilize colloidal clusters and nanoparticles in solution, but the adsorption and relative potential-induced structure change of the surfactant were not known. Here, the adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on a Au(111) surface under potential control was investigated by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The STM images showed that the morphology of SDS on Au(111) was changed from a hemi-cylindrical micellar monolayer to a compact and uniform bilayer through control of the potential. The transition between the hemimicellar monolayer and the compact bilayer is not reversed after a period of time. The model of potential-induced transformation for SDS aggregates on Au(111) was established. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
