Two-dimensional periodic nanostructures on ZnO crystal surface were fabricated by two-beam interference of 790 nm femtosecond laser. The long period is, as usually reported, determined by the interference pattern of two laser beams. Surprisingly, there is another short periodic nanostructures with periods of 220-270 nm embedding in the long periodic structures. We studied the periods, orientation, and the evolution of the short periodic nanostructures, and found them analogous to the self-organized nanostructures induced by single fs laser beam. We investigated the dynamics of spontaneous emission from a photonic crystal etched into a SiN slab. After fitting the decay curves of the emission to double exponential functions, we divided the dynamic process of the spontaneous emission into a fast process and a slow process. It was observed that the presence of the photonic crystal increased the proportion of the fast decay component, and consequently, the emission rate and time-integrated emission intensity were also enhanced. These enhancements were a result of the coupling of the guide modes to the leaky modes of the photonic crystal slab waveguide. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Photoluminescence (PL) and temperature-dependent Hall effect measurements were carried out in (0001) and (11 (2) over bar0) AlGaN/GaN heterostructures grown on sapphire substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. There are strong spontaneous and piezoelectric electric fields (SPF) along the growth orientation of the (0001) AlGaN/GaN heterostructures. At the same time there are no corresponding SPF along that of the (1120) AlGaN/GaN. A strong PL peak related to the recombination between two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and photoexcited holes was observed at 3.258 eV at room temperature in (0001) AlGaN/GaN heterointerfaces while no corresponding PL peak was observed in (11 (2) over bar0). The existence of a 2DEG was observed in (0001) AlGaN/GaN multi-layers with a mobility saturated at 6000 cm(2)/V s below 80 K, whereas a much lower mobility was measured in (11 (2) over bar0). These results indicated that the SPF was the main element to cause the high mobility and high sheet-electron-density 2DEG in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A numerical study of the defect modes in two-dimensional photonic crystals with deformed triangular lattice is presented by using the supercell method and the finite-difference time-domain method. We find the stretch or shrink of the lattice can bring the change not only on the frequencies of the defect modes but also on their magnetic field distributions. We obtain the separation of the doubly degenerate dipole modes with the change of the lattice and find that both the stretch and the shrink of the lattice can make the dipole modes separate large enough to realize the single-mode emission. These results may be advantageous to the manufacture of photonic crystal lasers and provide a new way to realize the single-mode operation in photonic crystal lasers.

The authors calculate the lifetime distribution functions of spontaneous emission from infinite line antennas embedded in two-dimensional disordered photonic crystals with finite size. The calculations indicate the coexistence of both accelerated and inhibited decay processes in disordered photonic crystals with finite size. The decay behavior of the spontaneous emission from infinite line antennas changes significantly by varying factors such as the line antennas' positions in the disordered photonic crystal, the shape of the crystal, the filling fraction, and the dielectric constant. Moreover, the authors analyze the effect of the degree of disorder on spontaneous emission. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) in InAlAs grown on (001) and (311)B InP substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) have been comparatively investigated. A correlated study of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) disclosed that InAs QDs grown on high-index InP substrates can lead to high density and uniformity. By introducing a lattice-matched InAlGaAs overlayer on InAlAs buffer, still more dense and uniform InAs QDs were obtained in comparison with InAs QDs formed with only InAlAs matrix. Moreover, two-dimensional well-ordered InAs dots with regular shape grown on (311)B InP substrates are reported for the first time. We explained this exceptional phenomenon from strain energy combined with kinetics point of view. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Two-dimensional (2D) ordering of self-assembled InxGa1-xAs quantum dots (QDs) fabricated on GaAs(311)B surface by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are reported. The QDs are aligned into rows deferring from the direction of the misorientation of the substrate, and strongly dependent on the mole In content x of InxGa1-xAs solid solution. The ordering alignment deteriorates significantly as the In content is increased to above 0.5. The 2D ordering can be described as a centered rectangular unit mesh with the two sides parallel to [01 (1) over bar] and [(2) over bar 33], respectively. Their relative arrangement seems to be determined by a combination of the strongly repulsive elastic interaction between neighbouring islands and the minimization of the strain energy of the whole system. The ordering also helps to improve the size homogeneity of the InGaAs islands. Photoluminescence (PL) result demonstrates that QDs grown on (311)B have the narrowest linewidth and the strongest integrated intensity, compared to those grown on (100) and other high-index planes under the same condition. The two-dimensional (2D) ordering of self-assembled InxGa1-xAs quantum dots (QDs) fabricated on GaAs(3 1 1)B surface by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are reported. We used Plane Wave Expansion Method and a Rapid Genetic Algorithm to design two-dimensional photonic crystals with a large absolute band gap. A filling fraction controlling operator and Fourier transform data storage mechanism had been integrated into the genetic operators to get desired photonic crystals effectively and efficiently. Starting from randomly generated photonic crystals, the proposed RGA evolved toward the best objectives and yielded a square lattice photonic crystal with the band gap (defined as the gap to mid-gap ratio) as large as 13.25%. Furthermore, the evolutionary objective was modified and resulted in a satisfactory PC for better application to slab system.

We report a successful experimental observation of two-dimensional photovoltaic dark solitons in an anisotropic crystal with partially spatially incoherent light beams. This kind of solitons results from the bulk photovoltaic effect, which depends on the direction of propagation of the optical beam and on the orientation of the intensity gradient, with respect to the principal axes of the crystal.

A simple hydrothermal method has been developed to synthesize monodisperse beta-NaLuF4 microplates in a large scale. The microcrystals have a perfect hexagonal shape with a diameter of about 5.2 mu m and a thickness of 300 nm. Trisodium citrate (Cit(3-)), which is introduced into the reaction mixture and acts as the chelating agent and shape modifier, plays a key role in fine-tuning the microstructures. The dominant adsorption of Cit(3-) onto the {0001} facets lowers the surface energy of these facets.

The title compound, [Cu-2(C9H10NO3)(2)(NO3)(2)(C10H8N2)-(H2O)(2)](n), contains Cu-II atoms and L-tyrosinate (L-tyr) and 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy) ligands in a 2:2:1 ratio. Each Cu atom is coordinated by one amino N atom and two carboxylate O atoms from two L-tyr ligands, one N atom from a 4,4'-bipy ligand, a monodentate nitrate ion and a water molecule in an elongated octahedral geometry. Adjacent Cu atoms are bridged by the bidentate carboxylate groups into a chain. These chains are further linked by the bridging 4,4'-bipy ligands, forming an undulated chiral two-dimensional sheet. O-H center dot center dot center dot O and N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds connect the sheets in the [100] direction. This study offers useful information for the engineering of chiral coordination polymers with amino acids and 4,4'-bipy ligands by considering the ratios of the metal ion and organic components.

Two-dimensional (2-D) gold networks were spontaneously formed at the air-water interface after HAuCl4 reacted with fructose at 90 degrees C in a sealed vessel, in a reaction in which fructose acted as both a reducing and a protecting agent. Through fine-tuning of the molar ratio of HAuCl4 to fructose, the thus-formed 2-D gold networks can be changed from a coalesced pattern to an interconnected pattern. In the coalesced pattern, some well-defined single-crystalline gold plates at the micrometer-scale could be seen, while in the interconnected pattern, many sub-micrometer particles and some irregular gold plates instead of well-defined gold plates appeared. It is also found that the 2-D gold networks in the form of an interconnected pattern can be used as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) because of the strong localized electromagnetic field produced by the gaps between the neighboring particles in the 2-D gold networks.

Reactions of Zn(BF4)(2) and pyridine-2,4-dicarboxylic acid (2,4-pydcH(2)) in the presence of 1,2-bis( 4-pyridyl) ethylene or 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane under hydro(solvo) thermal conditions yielded two polymorphic metal-organic coordination polymers formulated as Zn-2(OH)(2)(2,4-pydc) (1 and 2). Polymorph 1 features a two-dimensional (2-D) layer-like structure that is constructed by 2,4-pydc ligands bridging between the Zn-OH-Zn double-chain units. Each single Zn-OH-Zn chain is composed of mu(2)-OH groups connecting trigonal bipyramidal and tetrahedral Zn centers. Polymorph 2 is a 3-D coordination polymer containing 2-D Zn-OH-Zn sheets that consist of mu(2)- and mu(3)-OH groups and trigonal bipyramidal Zn centers. The sheets are pillared by 2,4-pydc ligands to form an acentric structural architecture. 1 and 2 are rare examples that the two polymorphs exhibit a centrosymmetric 2-D coordination network and an acentric 3-D coordination network, respectively. The different structures lead to differences in photoluminescent properties and thermal stabilities for 1 and 2.
