The dependence of the performance of organic light-emitting devices(OLEDs) on the sheet resistance of indium-tin-oxide(ITO) anodes was investigated by measuring the steady state current density brightness voltage characteristics and the electroluminescent spectra. The device with a higher sheet resistance anode shows a lower current density, a lower brightness level, and a higher operation voltage. The electroluminescence(EL) efficiencies of the devices with the same structure but different ITO anodes show more complicated differences. Furthermore, the shift of the light-emitting zone toward the anode was found when an anode with a higher sheet resistance was used. These performance differences are discussed and attributed to the reduction of hole injection and the increase in voltage drop over ITO anode with the increase in sheet resistance.

This paper describes an indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode-based Ru(bPY)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminecence (ECL) detector for a microchip capillary electrophoresis (CE). The microchip CE-ECL system described in this article consists of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) layer containing separation and injection channels and an electrode plate with an ITO electrode fabricated by a photolithographic method. The PDMS layer was reversibly bound to the ITO electrode plate, which greatly simplified the alignment of the separation channel with the working electrode and enhanced the photon-capturing efficiency. In our study, the high separation electric field had no significant influence on the ECL detector, and decouplers for isolating the separation electric field were not needed in the microchip CE-ECL system. The ITO electrodes employed in the experiments displayed good durability and stability in the analytical procedures. Proline was selected to perform the microchip device with a limit of detection of 1.2 muM (S/N = 3) and a linear range from 5 to 600 muM.

Non-stoichiometric mixed-valent molybdenum(VI, V) oxide film was grown on carbon substrates by the electrodeposition method. Responses of the prepared molybdenum oxide thin films to potential and to different solution acidities were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and the corresponding morphological changes of the film were monitored by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images of the molybdenum oxide film show that the characteristic domed structure on the film surface increased during the transition from the oxidized state to the reduced state without signification change in the KMS surface roughness value. Furthermore, AFM studies show that the solution acidity has great effect on the morphology of the films, and the films undergo a homogenizing process with increasing pH of the solutions. A highly efficient light-trapping structure, consisting of a diffractive grating, a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and a metal reflector was proposed. As an example, the proposed light-trapping structure with an indium tin oxide (ITO) diffraction grating, an a-Si:H/ITO DBR and an Ag reflector was optimized by the simulation via rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) for a 2.0-mu m-thick c-Si solar cell with an optimized ITO front antireflection (AR) layer under the air mass 1.5 (AM1.5) solar illumination. The weighted absorptance under the AM1.5 solar spectrum (A(AM1.5)) of the solar cell can reach to 69%, if the DBR is composed of 4 pairs of a-Si:H/ITOs. If the number of a-Si:H/ITO pairs is up to 8, a larger A(AM1.5) of 72% can be obtained. In contrast, if the Ag reflector is not adopted, the combination of the optimized ITO diffraction grating and the 8-pair a-Si:H/ITO DBR can only result in an A(AM1.5) of 68%. As the reference, A(AM1.5) = 31% for the solar cell only with the optimized ITO front AR layer. So, the proposed structure can make the sunlight highly trapped in the solar cell. The adoption of the metal reflector is helpful to obtain highly efficient light-trapping effect with less number of DBR pairs, which makes that such light-trapping structure can be fabricated easily.

Organic light emitting diodes using a mixed layer of electron acceptor 3, 4, 9, 10 perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride and electron donor copper phthalocyanine (PTCDA:CuPc) on indium tin oxide (ITO) anodes were fabricated. The device properties were found to be strongly dependent on the thickness of the PTCDA:CuPc film: both the power efficiency and the driving voltage of the device were optimized with a thickness of PTCDA:CuPc ranging from 10 to 20 nm. As compared to the conventional ITO/CuPc hole injection structure, the ITO/PTCDA:CuPc hole injection structure could remarkably enhance both the luminance and the power efficiencies of devices. A mechanism of static-induced, very efficient hole-electron pairs generation in mixed PTCDA:CuPc films was proposed to explain the experimental phenomena. The structural and optical properties of PTCDA:CuPc film were examined as well. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiopliene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films have been electrochemically polymerized in situ on ITO glass substrate in boron trifluoride diethyl etherate electrolyte (BFEE). Cyclic voltammograms show good redox activity and stability of the PEDOT films. These films had been directly used to fabricate organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells with the structure of ITO/PEDOT/ZnO:MDMC-PPV/Al. The solar cells made of electrochemically polymerized films exhibit higher energy conversion efficiencies compared with that prepared by the spin-coating method, and the highest value is 0.33%. This in-situ electropolymerized method effectively simplifies fabricating procedures and may blaze a facile and economical route for producing high-efficiency solar cells.

An organic integrated pixel with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) driven by organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) is fabricated by a greatly simplified processing. The OTFTs are based on copper phthalocyanine as the active medium and fabricated on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass with top-gate structure, thus an organic integrated pixel is easily made by integrating OLED with OTFT. The OTFTs show field-effect mobility of 0.4 cm(2) /Vs and on/off ratio of 10(3) order. The OLED is driven well and emits the brightness as large as 2100cd/m(2) at a current density of 14.6 mu A/cm(2) at -19.7 V gate voltage. This simple device structure is promising in the future large-area flexible OLED displays.

An effective electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor based on Nafion/poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) composite film-modified ITO electrode was developed. The Nafion/PSS/Ru composite film was characterized by atomic force microscopy, UV-vis absorbance spectroscopy and electrochemical experiments. The Nafion/PSS composite film could effectively immobilize tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) via ion-exchange and electrostatic interaction. The ECL behavior of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) immobilized in Nafion/PSS composite film was investigated using tripropylamine (TPA) as an analyte. The detection limit (S/N = 3) for TPA at the Nafion/PSS/Ru composite-modified electrode was estimated to be 3.0 nM, which is 3 orders of magnitude lower than that obtained at the Nafion/Ru modified electrode. The Nafion/PSS/Ru composite film-modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode also exhibited good ECL stability. In addition, this kind of immobilization approach was simple, effective, and timesaving.

Two- and three-dimensional Au nanoparticle/[tetrakis(N-methylpyridyl)porphyrinato]cobalt (CoTMPyP) nanostructured materials were prepared by "bottom-up" self-assembly. The electrocatalytic and plasmonic properties of the Au nanoparticle/CoTMPyP self-assembled nanostructured materials (abbreviated as Au/CoTMPyP SANMs) are tunable by controlled self-assembly of the An nanoparticles and CoTMPyP on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. The electrocatalytic activity of the Au/CoTMPyP SANMs can be tuned in two ways. One way is that citrate-stabilized An nanoparticles are positioned first on ITO surface with tunable number density, and then positively charged CoTMPyP ions are planted selectively on these gold sites. The other way is that An nanoparticles and CoTMPyP are deposited by virtue of layer-by-layer assembly, which can also tune the amount of the as-deposited electrocatalysts. FE-SEM studies showed that three-dimensional SANMs grow in the lateral expansion mode, and thermal annealing resulted in both surface diffusion of nanoparticles and atomic rearrangement to generate larger gold nanostructures with predominant (I 11) facets.

Electrospun poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers mat was collected on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. Heat crosslinked nanofibers mat became water-insoluble and firmly fixed on ITO substrate even in water. Oppositely charged poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and Dawson-type polyoxometalate (POM), Na6P2Mo18O62 (P2Mo18), were alternately assembled on PVA nanofibers-coated ITO substrate to construct multilayer film through an electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) images showed that P2Mo18 multilayer film was selectively deposited on PVA nanofibers while the unoccupied space by nanofibers on bare ITO was acted as substrate at the same time because the electrospun nanofibers have larger surface area and surface energy than the flat substrate. The cyclic voltammograms current responses of the P2Mo18 multilayer film on PVA/ITO electrode showed three well-defined redox couples of P2Mo18, but very small because P2Mo18 multilayer film was selectively deposited on PVA nanofibers with poor conductivity. In addition, the photochromic behavior of P2Mo18 multilayer film on PVA/ITO was investigated through UV-vis spectra and electron spin resonance (ESR). Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved that the charge-transfer complex was formed between PAH and P2Mo18 after UV irradiation.

A novel terbium complex, Tb(acac)(3)AAP (acac: acetylacetone, AAP: 4-amino-antipyrine), was synthesized and its luminescent properties were studied. When it was used as an emitting center, triple-layer-type device with a structure of glass substrate/ITO (indium-tin oxide)/TPD (N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine)./Tb(acac)(3)AAP/PBD (2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-t-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole) or Alq(3) (tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum)/Al (aluminum) exhibited bright characteristic emission of terbium ion upon applying d.c. voltage. The maximum luminance of the device is 56 cd/m(2) at 19 V and the maximum luminance efficiency is 0.357 lm/W.

Poly[2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV) capped PbS quantum dots about 3-6 nm in diameter were synthesized with a novel method. Unlike the synthesis of oleic acid capped PbS quantum dots, the reactions were carried out in solution at room temperature, with the presence of a capping ligand species, MDMO-PPV. The quantum dots were used to fabricate bulk heterojunction solar cells with an indium tin oxide (ITO)/polyethylenedioxythiophene/polystyrenesulphonate (PEDOT: PSS)/MDMO-PPV: PbS/Al structure. Current density-voltage characterization of the devices showed that after the addition of the MDMO-PPV capped PbS quantum dots to MDMO-PPV film, the performance was dramatically improved compared with pristine MDMO-PPV solar cells. Tin mono-sulphide (SnS) nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile method. Reactions producing narrow size distribution SnS nanoparticles with the diameter of 5.0-10 nm were carried out in an ethylene glycol solution at 150 degrees C for 24 h. Bulk heterojunction solar cells with the structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/polyethylenedioxythiophene polystyrenesulphonate (PEDOT PSS)/SnS polymer/Al were fabricated by blending the nanoparticles with a conjugated polymer to form the active layer for the first time. Current density-voltage characterization of the devices showed that due to the addition of SnS nanoparticles to the polymer film, the device performance can be dramatically improved, compared with that of the pristine polymer solar cells.
