We present a good alternative method to improve the tribological properties of polymer films by chemisorbing a long-chain monolayer on the functional polymer surface. Thus, a novel self-assembled monolayer is successfully prepared on a silicon substrate coated with amino-group-containing polyethyleneimine (PEI) by the chemical adsorption of stearic acid (STA) molecules. The formation and structure of the STA-PEI film are characterized by means of contact-angle measurement and ellipsometric thickness measurement, and of Fourier transformation infrared spectrometric and atomic force microscopic analyses. The micro- and macro-tribological properties of the STA-PEI film are investigated on an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a unidirectional tribometer, respectively. It has been found that the STA monolayer about 2.1-nm thick is produced on the PEI coating by the chemical reaction between the amino groups in the PEI and the carboxyl group in the STA molecules to form a covalent amide bond in the presence of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD) as a dehydrating regent. By introducing the STA monolayer, the hydrophilic PEI polymer surface becomes hydrophobic with a water contact angle to be about 105degrees. Study of the time dependence of the film formation shows that the adsorption of PEI is fast, whereas at least 24 h is needed to generate the saturated STA monolayer. Whereas the PEI coating has relatively high adhesion, friction, and poor anti-wear ability, the STA-PEI film possesses good adhesive resistance and high load-carrying capacity and anti-wear ability, which could be attributed to the chemical structure of the STA-PEI thin film. It is assumed that the hydrogen bonds between the molecules of the STA-PEI film act to stabilize the film and can be restored after breaking during sliding. Thus, the self-assembled STA-PEI thin film might find promising application in the lubrication of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS).

Organised multilayers were formed from the controlled self-assembly of ferrocene alkyl thiols on Au(111) surfaces. The control was accomplished by increasing the concentration of the thiol solutions used for the assembly. Cyclic voltammetry, ellipsometry, scanning probe microscopy (STM and AFM) and in situ FTIR spectroscopy were used to probe the differences between mono- and multilayers of the same compounds. Electrochemical desorption studies confirmed that the multilayer structure is attached to the surface via one monolayer. The electrochemical behaviour of the multilayers indicated the presence of more than one controlling factor during the oxidation step, whereas the reduction was kinetically controlled which contrasts with the behaviour of monolayers, which exhibit kinetic control for the oxidation and reduction steps. Conventional and imaging ellipsometry confirmed that multilayers with well-defined increments in thickness could be produced. However, STM indicated that at the monolayer stage, the thiols used promote the mobility of Au atoms on the surface. It is very likely that the multilayer structure is held together through hydrogen bonding. To the best of out knowledge, this is the first example of a controlled one-step growth of multilayers of ferrocenyl alkyl thiols using self-assembly techniques.

Multiple refocusing of a tightly focused femtosecond laser due to the dynamic transformation between self-focusing and self-defocusing is employed to provide a novel method to produce quasi-periodic voids in glass. It is found that the diameter or the interval of the periodic voids increases with the increasing pulse energy of the laser. The detailed course for producing periodic voids is discussed by analysing the damaged track induced by the tightly focused femtosecond laser pulses. It is suggested that this periodic structure has potential applications in fabrication of three-dimensional optical devices.

We report a quantum dot (QD) ensemble structure in which the in-plane arrangements of the dots are in a hexagonal way while the dots are also vertically aligned. Such a distinct lateral ordering of QDs is achieved on a planar GaAs(l 0 0) rather than on a prepatterned substrate by strain-mediated multilayer vertical stacking of the QDs. The analysis indicates that the strain energy of the lateral island-island interaction is minimum for arrangement of the hexagonal ordering. The ordered dots demonstrate strong photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature (RT) and the full width at half maximum of PL peak at RT is only 50 meV. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The formation process of InAs quantum dots (QDs) on vicinal GaAs (1 0 0) substrates is studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that after 1.2 MLs of InAs deposition, while the QDs with diameters less than the width of the multi-atomic steps are shrinking, the larger QDs are growing. Photoluminescence measurements of the uncapped QDs correspond well to the AFM structure observations of the QDs. We propose that the QDs undergo an anomalous coarsening process with modified growth kinetics resulting from the restrictions of the finite terrace sizes. A comparison between the QDs on the vicinal GaAs (1 0 0) substrates and the QDs on the exact GaAs (1 0 0) further verifies the effect of the multi-atomic steps on the formation of QDs.

Quantum-confined Stark effect and built-in dipole moment in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs), which are grown at relative low temperature (460degreesC) and embedded in GaAs p-i-n structure, have been studied by dc-biased electroreflectance. Franz-Keldysh oscillations from the undoped GaAs layer are used to determine the electric field under various bias voltages. Stark shift of -34 meV for the ground-state interband transition of the QDs is observed when the electric field increases from 105 to 308 kV/cm. The separation of the electron and hole states in the growth direction of 0.4 nm, corresponding to the built-in dipole moment of 6.4x10(-29) C m, is determined. It is found that the electron state lies above that of the hole, which is the same as that predicted by theoretical calculations for ideal pyramidal InAs QDs. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

In this paper we study a single electron tunneling through a vertically stacked self-assembled quantum disks structure using a transfer matrix technique in the framework of effective mass approximation. In the disks, the electron is confined both laterally and vertically; we separate the motion in the vertical and lateral directions within the adiabatic approximation and treat the energy levels of the latter as an effective confining potential. The influence of a constant applied electric field is taken into account using an exact Airy-function formalism and the current density is calculated at zero temperature. By increasing the widths of the barriers, we find the peaks of the current density shift toward lower voltage region; meanwhile, they can become even sharper. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Effects of rapid thermal annealing on the optical and structural properties of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots capped by the InAlAs/InGaAs combination layers are studied by photoluminescence and transmission electron microscopy. The photoluminescence measurement shows that the photoluminescence peak of the sample after 850 degrees C rapid thermal annealing is blue shifted with 370meV and the excitation peak intensity increases by a factor of about 2.7 after the rapid thermal annealing, which indicates that the InAs quantum dots have experienced an abnormal transformation during the annealing. The transmission electron microscopy shows that the quantum dots disappear and a new InAlGaAs single quantum well structure forms after the rapid thermal annealing treatment. The transformation mechanism is discussed. These abnormal optical properties are attributed to the structural transformation of these quantum dots into a single quantum well.

We have studied the exciton states of vertically stacked self-assembled quantum disks within the effective mass approximation. The ground energies of a heavy-hole and a light-hole excitons as functions of the vertical disk separation are presented and discussed. The transition energy of a heavy-hole ground-state exciton is calculated and compared with the experimental data. The binding energies are discussed in terms of the probability of ground wave function. The ground energies of a heavy-hole and a light-hole excitons as functions of the applied axial magnetic field are calculated and the effect of disk size (radius of disks) on exciton energies is discussed. InAs quantum dots have been grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy on different matrix to investigate the effect on the structure and optical properties. High density of 1.02 x 10(11) cm(-2) of InAs islands on In0.15Ga0.85As and In0.15Al0.85As underlying layer has been achieved. Atomic force microscopy and photoluminescence spectra show the size evolution of InAs islands on In0.15Ga0.85As underlying layer. A strong 1.3 mum photoluminescence from InAs islands on In0.15Ga0.85As underlying layer and with InGaAs strain-reduced layer has been obtained. Single-mirror light emitting diode structures with InAs quantum dots capped by InGaAs grown on InGaAs layer as active layer were fabricated and the corresponding radiative efficiency was deduced to be as high as 20.5%. Our results provide important information for optimizing the epitaxial structures of 1.3 mum wavelength quantum dots devices. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Diagonal self-assembled InAs quantum wire (QWR) arrays with the stacked InAs/In0.52Al0.48As structure are grown on InP substrates, which are (001)-oriented and misoriented by 6degrees towards the [100] direction. Both the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and migration enhanced epitaxy (MEE) techniques are employed. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that whether a diagonal InAs QWR array of the stacked InAs/InAlAs is symmetrical about the growth direction or not depends on the growth method as well as substrate orientation. Asymmetry in the diagonal MEE-grown InAs QWR array can be ascribed to the influence of surface reconstruction on upward migration of adatoms during the self-assembly of the InAs quantum wires.

We have fabricated a quantum dot (QD) structure for long-wavelength temperature-insensitive semiconductor laser by introducing a combined InAlAs and InGaAs overgrowth layer on InAs/GaAs QDs. We found that QDs formed on GaAs (100) substrate by InAs deposition followed by the InAlAs and InGaAs combination layer demonstrate two effects: one is the photoluminescence peak redshift towards 1.35 mum at room temperature, the other is that the energy separation between the ground and first excited states can be up to 103 meV. These results are attributed to the fact that InAs/GaAs intermixing caused by In segregation at substrate temperature of 520 degreesC can be considerably suppressed by the thin InAlAs layer and the strain in the quantum dots can be reduced by the combined InAlAs and InGaAs layer. We investigated properties of intraband absorption in In-x Ga1-xAs quantum dots (QDs) superlattice. Energy levels in conduction band in QDs were calculated for a cone-shaped quantum dot associated with coupling between QDs in the framework of the effective-mass envelope-function theory. Theoretical results demonstrated that energy levels in conduction band were greatly affected by the vertical coupling between quantum dots, which can be used to modify transition wavelength by adjusting the space layer thickness. Intraband transition is really sensitive to normal incidence and the absorption peak intensity is dependent on the polarization. A satisfying agreement is found between theoretical and experimental values. This result opens up prospects for the fabrication of QDs infrared detectors, which work at atmospheric windows.

The photoluminescence (PL) of In0.55Al0.45As/Al0.5Ga0.5As self-assembled quantum dots has been measured at 15 and 80 K under hydrostatic pressure. The lateral size of the dots ranges from 7 to 62 nm. The emissions from the dots with 26, 52 and 62 nm size have a blue shift under pressure, indicating that these quantum dots have the normal type-I structure with lowest conduction band at the Gamma -valley. However, the PL peak of dots with 7 nm diameter moves to lower energy with increasing pressure. It is a typical character for the X-related transition. Then these small dots have a type-II structure with the X-valley as the lowest conduction level. An envelope-function calculation confirms that the Gamma -like exciton transition energy will rise above the X-like transition energy in the In0.55Al0.45As/Al0.5Ga0.5As structure if the dot size is small enough.
