Interspecific reciprocal crosses between the two flatfishes Paralichthys olivaceus and P. dentatus yielded hybrids with different viabilities. Specifically, the hybrids of P. olivaceus female and P. dentatus male (HI) were found to be viable, while the reciprocal hybrids from P. dentatus female and P. olivaceus male (HII) were completely inviable. All the HII individuals showed morphological deformities and died before first feeding. The chromosome analysis showed that HI individuals had the same chromosome number as parents. However, two chromosomes were missing in HII offspring indicating that the latter were aneuploids. Genomic inheritance from the parents to F-1 progeny was also examined by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analyses, and the results showed differences between reciprocal hybrids. Almost all AFLP bands (97.71%) observed in parents were passed on to HI individuals. In contrast, only 86.64% of the AFLP bands from parents were scored in HII individuals. Frequency of lost parental bands was thus significantly higher in HII than that in HI and intraspecific crosses, which was probably associated with chromosomal elimination. In addition, higher segregation distortions were found in hybrids than in controls, although these differences were not significant. The present study indicates that chromosomal elimination and loss of AFLP loci occurred in inviable HII individuals, while such genomic changes were not found in viable HI individuals. Possible implications of such difference on genomic changes for asymmetric viability in reciprocal hybrids are discussed.

Based on the research of juvenile (2, 3, 4 months) growth and survival of three populations of two different geographic areas in Chlamys farreri from Russian and China and their F, hybrids derived from Chinese cultural population (CC) female x Russian population (RW) male, Chinese wild population (CW) female x Russian population (RW) male, Russian population (RW) female x Chinese wild population (CW) the study of the medium-term (6, 8, 10, 12 months) growth and development of Chlamys farreri was carried out. The four determined results indicated that there existed different extent heterosis (3% similar to 52 %) for the growth in three types of F-1 hybrids, and the offspring derived from CC female X Rmale had a stronger heterosis among the crosses at the medium-term; the uptrend among traits are wet weight > shell width > shell length > shell height, Chinese cultural population could be recognized as excellent parent, and seasonal variations influence very much on the daily increment and growth rate of each trait of Chlamys farreri and it is only able to survive and could barely grow in winter (6 similar to 8 months), but grows fast in temperate season (10similar to12 months).

A complete diallel cross between two bay scallop populations, Argopecten irradians concentricus Say (M) and A. irradians irradians Lamarck (C), was carried out. Growth and survival were compared among hybrids and pure populations. No significant difference in the shell length was found among the four groups on the first day of D-larvae. On day 10, shell lengths of the two reciprocal crosses (CM, MC)(female x male ) were significantly greater than those of the CC (141.97 mu m) and MM (146.20 mu m) groups, with the growth rate of the MC (156.14 mu m) cross greater than that of the CM (155.35 mu m) cross. Also, heterosis for survival was significantly larger than that for growth. Both maternal origin and mating strategy had significant effects on growth and survival throughout the whole larval stage. Heterosis was also observed in later spat and adult stages. On day 170, the mean shell length, shell height and total weight of the CM cross were significantly larger than those of the other crosses (P<0.05). The results from this study indicate that hybridization between A. irradians concentricus and A. irradians irradians may be a promising way for genetic improvement of existing bay scallop brood stocks in China. Semi-weight function method is developed to solve the plane problem of two bonded dissimilar materials containing a crack along the bond. From equilibrium equation, stress and strain relationship, conditions of continuity across interface and free crack surface, the stress and displacement fields were obtained. The eigenvalue of these fields is lambda. Semi-weight functions were obtained as virtual displacement and stress fields with eigenvalue-lambda. Integral expression of fracture parameters, K-I and K-II, were obtained from reciprocal work theorem with semi-weight functions and approximate displacement and stress values on any integral path around crack tip. The calculation results of applications show that the semi-weight function method is a simple, convenient and high precision calculation method.

The melting process of nickel nanowires are simulated by using molecular dynamics with the quantum Sutten-Chen many-body force field. The wires studied were approximately cylindrical in cross-section and periodic boundary conditions were applied along their length; the atoms were arranged initially in a face-centred cubic structure with the [0 0 1] direction parallel to the long axis of the wire. The size effects of the nanowires on the melting temperatures are investigated. We find that for the nanoscale regime, the melting temperatures of Ni nanowires are much lower than that of the bulk and are linear with the reciprocal of the diameter of the nanowire. When a nanowire is heated up above the melting temperature, the neck of the nanowire begins to arise and the diameter of neck decreases rapidly with the equilibrated running time. Finally, the breaking of nanowire arises, which leads to the formation of the spherical clusters. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The m-plane GaN films grown on LiAlO2(100) by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition exhibit anisotropic crystallographic properties. The Williamson-Hall plots point out they are due to the different tilts and lateral correlation lengths of mosaic blocks parallel and perpendicular to GaN[0001] in the growth plane. The symmetric and asymmetric reciprocal space maps reveal the strain of m-plane GaN to be biaxial in-plane compress epsilon(xx)=-0.79% and epsilon(zz)=-0.14% with an out-of-plane dilatation epsilon(yy)=0.38%. This anisotropic strain further separates the energy levels of top valence band at Gamma point. The energy splitting as 37 meV as well as in-plane polarization anisotropy for transitions are found by the polarized photoluminescence spectra at room temperature.   克隆植物常常生长在资源异质性分布的环境中,克隆植物特有的生活史特征使其对环境和资源变化产生的反应规范(Reaction norm)具有特殊的表现和适应意义。本文以匍匐茎草本植物蛇莓(Duchesnea indica)和活血丹(Glechoma longituba)为材料,研究克隆植物在不同异质性环境中的反应规范,即可塑性(plasticity)和克隆分株间相互作用(即克隆整合(clonal integration))对表型的影响及其适应意义。 蛇莓和活血丹是具有不同分枝类型的两种匍匐茎草本植物。对于匍匐茎草本植物而言,生境中光资源分布在时间和空间上的变化极为丰富。本文主要研究在不同环境中,这两种克隆植物克隆分株间的相互作用是如何通过影响其形态特征,从而影响其光资源获取策略。 实验涉及了4种光照条件,分为5个部分,分别在大棚和野外进行。 1.同质光环境中蛇莓和活血丹克隆片段的可塑性 在大棚中,将整个克隆片段(clonal fragment)都放置在光照强度分别为自然光照PPFD(Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density)的100%、50%和10%三种不同的同质光环境中,目标是通过比较不同光照强度同质环境中不同基因型的形态特征,揭示匍匐茎草本克隆植物的反应规范及遗传差异。实验结果发现,当光照强度从100% PPFD 降到 50% PPFD时,活血丹增加对地上部分生物量投资,增加部分多投入到匍匐茎上,用于支持匍匐茎实现觅食行为,叶片和叶柄的变化不大。同样条件下,蛇莓的生物量投资却向根部转移,地上部分叶片和叶柄形态上的变化比匍匐茎的形态变化显著,出现增强对光资源吸收能力的变化。当光照强度从50%降到 10%时,活血丹继续增加对地上部分的生物量投资,但由于光照强度弱,几乎不足以维持新的匍匐茎的发生,所有增加的生物量部分都投入到叶片和叶柄的变化上。这种条件下,蛇莓的生物量投资依然向根部转移,叶片和叶柄为增加对光资源吸收能力而发生了相应变化,匍匐茎的新增数减少,形态变化也不大。实验证明,可能由于匍匐茎的发生方式不同,活血丹的匍匐茎节间长度,叶片和叶柄的关联程度比蛇莓相应性状的关联程度强。不同基因型的蛇莓和活血丹对光照梯度的反应有显著差异。 2.异质光环境中蛇莓克隆片段的可塑性 针对克隆植物分株间在相当长的时间里形体相连,而环境异质性可能存在于分株大小的空间尺度,设置异质环境,将蛇莓的不同相连分株放置在不同的光资源斑块中,研究其整合作用在适应异质性环境过程中的作用及其对表型的影响。首先设置同一种资源(光资源)的梯度差异斑块。 在光斑块中,整合作用发生与否、作用方式与资源梯度、分株自身所处斑块的资源条件和分株的年龄结构有关。在不同的条件下,整合作用可能造成对表型的不同影响,从而可能加剧或削弱分株对本地资源的反应(局部反应,local response)。整合作用对分株局部反应的影响强度和方向,在不同基因型间存在明显差异。这些基因型间的差异暗示,整合作用可能也是具有遗传基础的一种独立性状。 3.光块斑和养分斑块共存环境中活血丹克隆片段的可塑性 设置光和养分的资源互补性斑块。将相连分株种植在不同斑块中。当生长在高光低养斑块中的分株与其互补斑块(低光高养斑块)的分株相连时,其适合度相关性状的值增加,根冠比是可塑的,通过相应的形态变化,高光照斑块中的分株捕获光资源的能力增强,但两种斑块中植株的吸收养分的能力却没有大的变化。收益-损耗分析显示整合作用有益于异质环境中的植株,低光高养斑块中植株的生物量获益。实验结果证明了异质环境中相连分株间存在光合产物和养分传递。在这种环境种,分株形态的变化对本地斑块发生趋富反应,形态的改变有助于对本地丰富资源的吸收。这种反应有利于克隆片段对资源的吸收。 4.野外环境中蛇莓克隆片段的可塑性 基于大棚实验资料,对野外林下蛇莓种群进行监测。首先对单株在林下复杂的光环境中的表现进行了跟踪,结果发现,随着分株数目的增加,适合度相关性状值有所提高,而处于不同位置的相连分株在形态上的差异不显著。大棚实验中发现的显著形态变化在具有显著差异的自然环境条件下没有发生,这可能暗示着在资源条件变化频率较高的环境中整合作用的作用方式。分株不是对某一时刻资源条件进行形态特化,而是通过对所扩展的总体区域的总的环境条件调整表型。这样,从克隆片段的水平上看,资源的吸收可能达到较高水平。在密度增大,植株间互相荫蔽使得光照减弱的情况下,匍匐茎的变化没有表现出觅食行为,叶片和叶柄出现增大增长等增强吸收光能力的相应表型变化,证明叶片叶柄是克服光照不足的主要器官。这些结果与大棚实验结果一致。蛇莓基株对于相连分株内部可能具有密度调节功能,从而通过减弱叶片增大的趋势,增长匍匐茎,分散新生分株,使密度保持在一定程度,不对种群的发展造成阻碍作用。非相连分株间随着密度的增大,相互间的作用方式类似于非克隆植物:出现叶片增大,叶柄增长的现象,同时密度制约了适合度相关性状如分株数目等的增加。 5.野外环境中蛇莓种群格局动态 最后,在进化的单位,种群水平上对蛇莓种群在自然界的动态进行了调查。Spearman相关分析,没有发现光资源和测量指标在量上的相关。在自然界中整合作用使大量分散分布、相互连接的分株相互作用,以促进基株对资源的获取。Moran’s I指数分析显示,随时间的推进,各个指标在相关尺度上有所增加。这暗示了整合作用的存在,分株间联系的加强。大棚实验中观察到的关于各个器官的作用的结论在自然界中得到进一步的验证。蛇莓匍匐茎在遮荫环境中不是作为觅食器官。为了争取对更多光资源的吸收,蛇莓在叶片数和叶形态上发生改变。对分株数、叶片数、匍匐茎数目的分布格局的调查显示出没有一定的规律性,而且处于不断的变化中。这一结果可能暗示种群发展过程中处理异质性分布资源的对策的变化。 此外,本文还揭示了可塑性和整合作用在基因型间的差异,针对所发现的现象,从作用的遗传机制上对可塑性及其适应意义进行了讨论。结合分子生物学和地统计学等学科的研究成果,对进一步的实验提出了方法和路线。

本文以匍匐茎草本绢毛匍匐委陵菜(Potentilla reptans L var. sericophylla)为研究对象,基于实验生态学研究方法和野外调查研究了该植物对异质性环境的生态适应对策。   对落叶松和油松群林下的绢毛匍匐委陵菜的基株特征和种群特征研究表明:在落叶松林下,绢毛匍匐委陵菜克隆分株具有更大叶面积和更长叶柄;在油松林下,绢毛匍匐委陵菜具有更多的匍匐茎和更多的克隆分株。两个生境中的绢毛匍匐委陵菜形成与其生境相适应的克隆形态和克隆生长特征。在两个群落中的绢毛匍匐委陵菜分株种群的密度和地上生物量没有差异。   应用GS+统计软件分析了绢毛匍匐委陵菜分株种群特征及其与所处的土壤基质九个指标(土壤有机质(SOC)、土壤全氮(STN)、土壤全磷(STP)、有效钾(K+)、有效磷(PO43-)、NH4+、NO3-、土壤含水量(SWC)、pH)的空间分布格局的关系,结果显示,绢毛匍匐委陵菜克隆分株种群呈斑块状分布,其克隆分株数的空间自相关尺度为1米;其生长的土壤基质的9个土壤养分及土壤性状指标也都显示了强烈的空间自相关,其自相关尺度(变程)范围在0.24 m ~1.05 m之间,大小顺序为STP>K+>SOC>pH>STN> NO3-> PO43->SWC> NH4+。 其中除STP外,其他8个土壤指标的空间自相关尺度都在0.5 m 左右,NH4+仅为24.4 cm。绢毛匍匐委陵菜野外克隆分株的匍匐茎节间长平均在7 cm 左右。由此表明绢毛匍匐委陵菜克隆分株种群的空间分布尺度大于其所在土壤基质养分及其物理性状的分布尺度,相互联结的克隆分株对异质性土壤资源表现出较大的缓冲能力。其原因之一有可能是克隆生理整合作用使克隆分株局部反应减弱,克隆分株表现趋于一致,克隆分株间实现资源共享,从而高效利用异质性土壤资源。   绢毛对匍匐委陵菜克隆特征的局部特化实验将生长在北京东灵山油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)林林窗和林下的绢毛匍匐委陵菜,进行生境间的交互移植-重植野外生态实验以验证绢毛匍匐委陵菜林窗和林下种群间的行为差异是完全由表型可塑性引起,还是局部分化的结果。研究结果表明,实验植物的叶片长度、叶片宽度、叶柄长度和匍匐茎节间长度等克隆形态特征在两生境间无差异。两个来源的植株,其基株生物量、基株分株数和基株匍匐茎总长度等克隆生长特征在林下生境中都比在林窗生境中小,表现出显著的可塑性。所研究的克隆形态特征和克隆生长特征及其可塑性在不同生境来源的实验植物间没有差异。绢毛匍匐委陵菜克隆形态特征和克隆生长特征及其可塑性在林下和林窗生境间没有发生局部分化,林窗为其较适生境,克隆生长特征的可塑性对绢毛匍匐委陵菜利用生境异质性可能具有主要意义。   绢毛匍匐委陵菜对土壤养分的克隆可塑性共进行了两个实验。实验1 探讨绢毛匍匐委陵菜对8个土壤基质养分梯度(N, P, K)的克隆可塑性。其结果表明,在植株能够生长的土壤基质养分条件下,随着土壤养分浓度增加,基株生物量、匍匐茎数、分株数增加;生物量分配可塑性反应格局为:随着土壤基质养分浓度的增加,对根生物量投资降低,对叶片的生物量投资增加,而对匍匐茎的投资没有改变。匍匐茎节间长、比叶片重没有对土壤养分梯度发生可塑性反应。随着土壤基质养分的增加,植株根冠比和比根重下降,而根系总长和叶片面积增加。实验2 设置与实验1相同的8个土壤养分梯度,分三个时期收获以探讨绢毛匍匐委陵菜不同发育时期对土壤养分梯度的克隆可塑性,其结果表明:随着植株发育年龄的增加,绢毛匍匐委陵菜的克隆可塑性有增强的趋势。生物量分配格局对土壤养分梯度的可塑性反应早于基株总生物量的可塑性反应;叶片面积、根系总长度和比根重在植物生长后期对土壤养分梯度发生可塑性反应;比叶面积在植物生长早期对土壤养分梯度发生可塑性反应,而在后期则没有;匍匐茎比节间重在生长之初和生长后期均对养分梯度发生可塑性反应。   绢毛匍匐委陵菜对局部遮荫的克隆可塑性实验是将采自林窗和林内生境的绢毛匍匐委陵菜“分株对”(即由一匍匐茎节间相连着的两个分株,其一为“目标分株”另一为“相连分株”)在一户外实验中进行全不遮荫、全部遮荫和局部遮荫处理。其结果表明,绢毛匍匐委陵菜基株生物量、匍匐茎总长度、分株数、匍匐茎比节间重、叶柄长、比叶柄重在遮荫条件下较小。匍匐茎节间长度没有对遮荫处理发生反应。在局部遮荫处理,遮荫斑块的分株的叶柄长度由于连着未遮荫斑块中分株而变得更长。这种克隆整合对克隆形态可塑性的修饰作用只在林窗生境来源的实验植物中观察到。其它克隆生长和克隆形态特征的可塑性在不同生境来源的实验植物间没有差异。

克隆植物同一基株的相连克隆分株或克隆片段常常生长在资源条件不同的斑块中,分株间形成克隆整合和克隆可塑性以及克隆分工等有效地获取必需资源的生态适应对策,提高在异质性斑块生境中的适合度,适应环境的异质性变化。但在以往的克隆植物生态学的理论研究中,为了研究的简化和方便,往往忽略了土壤中微生物的作用。丛枝菌根(Arbuscular mycorrhiza, AM)真菌是自然界中广泛存在的土壤微生物之一,可与大多数的高等植物形成共生菌根,影响植物的生长、发育及其在生态系统中的作用。 本文应用实验生态学方法,以蛇莓、狗牙根和白三叶为研究对象,在温室受控条件下,对异质养分斑块中的分株对接种AM真菌,探讨AM真菌对资源斑块中克隆植物的影响。 第一个实验设计单一磷养分斑块,以蛇莓(Duchesnea indica)和摩西球囊霉(Glomus mosseae)为研究对象,探讨丛枝AM真菌对克隆整合的影响。将蛇莓相连的两个分株,即分株对,分别种植在两个隔离的花盆中,各施以高磷和低磷营养液,保持或切断分株间匍匐茎连接,即间隔子,再将菌剂接种到低磷斑块中分株。结果发现间隔子状态和接菌处理都显著影响低磷斑块中蛇莓分株的根系生物量分配。对照处理中保持间隔子连接显著减少低磷斑块中分株生物量向根系的分配,接菌后这一差异显著减小。保持间隔子连接或接菌对高磷斑块中分株的根系生物量分配不显著。保持间隔子连接和接菌都显著增加低磷斑块分株的生物量在分株对生物量中所占比例,二者无显著交互作用。 第二个实验设计光照和养分斑块,以狗牙根(Cynodon dactylon)和摩西球囊霉为研究对象,探讨AM真菌对克隆植物非局域反应的影响。将狗牙根分株对的两个分株分别种植在两个花盆中,各施以光照强度与土壤养分交互斑块性环境条件,形成高养低光和高光低养斑块,保持或切断间隔子,再将菌剂接种到目标分株。结果发现对照处理中,间隔子状态显著影响分株的局域反应。高养斑块中保持间隔子连接的分株的根长显著大于间隔子断裂的分株的根长,高光斑块中保持间隔子连接的分株的根长显著小于间隔子断裂的分株的根长。高光斑块中保持间隔子连接的分株的叶面积显著大于间隔子断裂的分株的叶面积,间隔子状态对低光高养斑块分株的叶面积无显著影响。在低光高养斑块中,相对于间隔子断裂的分株,间隔子连接的分株将更多的生物量分配到根系,而在高光斑块中的分株则相反。这些都说明,无AM真菌侵染的情况下,狗牙根分株对的两个分株在实验中各自形成的克隆部分的分株形态反应都受到了克隆整合的作用,表现为非局域反应。接种AM真菌后,高光斑块中分株的根长和高养斑块中分株的叶面积在间隔子连接和断裂处理之间的差异显著减小。生物量分配的差异不受接菌的影响。对照处理中,高养斑块中间隔子连接的分株生物量和分株数显著高于间隔子断裂的分株,但高光斑块中分株之间无显著差异。接种AM真菌显著降低高养斑块中分株的生物量和分株数,对高光斑块中分株无显著影响。 第三个实验设计光照和养分交互斑块,以白三叶(Trifolium repens)和多种AM真菌为研究对象,探讨AM真菌及其多样性对克隆分工的影响。将间隔子连接(整合)或断裂(无整合)的白三叶分株对种植于光照强度和土壤养分交互斑块性资源条件下(即,高光低养和低光高养),向分株对接种灭菌处理、单种或五种AM真菌的菌剂。结果发现,对照处理中,间隔子连接的分株对在光养交互斑块中与间隔子断裂的分株对相比较表现出克隆分工,即高光低养斑块中的分株的根系生物量分配增加,低光高养斑块中的分株的根系生物量分配减少。单菌处理没有影响对照处理中间隔子状态对分株对生物量分配的改变;多菌处理显著减小对照中生物量分配的改变;与单菌处理比较,多菌处理能显著减小生物量分配的改变。在高光低养斑块中,多菌处理显著抑制间隔子断裂分株的根生物量分配的增加。在低光高养斑块中,多菌处理完全抑制在对照处理中间隔子连接的分株的根生物量分配的增加。在对照处理中,间隔子连接分株的单叶面积、总叶面积、叶柄长、根长都与生物量分配趋势一致,表现出对丰富资源的特化。接菌处理能显著抑制这些形态指标的改变。多菌处理显著抑制这些指标的特化,并且抑制效果显著强于单菌处理。间隔子状态和AM真菌处理显著增加高光低养、低光高养斑块中分株及整个克隆片段的生物量和分株数。多菌处理抑制间隔子连接的克隆片段生物量和分株数增加。克隆片段的生物量和分株数在对照和单菌处理间无显著差异,在多菌处理中显著高于在单菌处理中。 以上三个实验说明,(1)AM真菌对克隆植物生长的影响与非克隆植物一样,受到植物种类和环境资源水平的影响;(2)AM真菌对异质性资源环境中克隆植物的影响由于植物不同而产生不同的效应;(3)提高AM真菌的多样性可能增强菌根对克隆植物的作用。 这些研究结果揭示出AM真菌与异质性环境中克隆植物整合作用、非局域反应和克隆分工作用的交互影响,表明克隆生长在生态系统中的重要性可由生物和非生物因素共同决定。

The black muntjac (Muntiacus crinifrons) has an unusual karyotype of 2n = 8 in females and 2n = 9 in males. We have studied the evolution of this karyotype by hybridising chromosome-specific paints derived from flow-sorted chromosomes of the Chinese muntjac (M. reevesi, 2n = 46) to chromosomes of the black muntjac. The hybridisation pattern allowed us to infer chromosomal homologies between these two species. Tandem and centromeric fusions, reciprocal translocations, and insertions are involved in the reduction of the diploid number from 2n = 46 to 2n = 8, 9. The painting patterns further show complex chromosomal rearrangements in the male black muntjac which involve more than half the karyotype, including both sex chromosomes. Since early meiosis is reported to be normal without any visible inversion loops of the synaptonemal complex, the observed chromosomal rearrangements would lead to heterosynapsis and, therefore, leave a large fraction of the male black muntjac karyotype balanced between the two sexes.

Chromosomal homologies were established between human and two Chinese langurs (Semnopithecus francoisi, 2n=44, and S. phayrei, 2n=44) by chromosome painting with chromosome-specific DNA probes of all human chromosomes except the Y. Both langur species showed identical hybridization patterns in addition to similar G-banding patterns. In total, 23 human chromosome-specific probes detected 30 homologous chromosome segments in a haploid langur genome. Except for human chromosomes 1, 2, 6, 16 and 19 probes, which each gave signals on two non-homologous langur chromosomes respectively, all other probes each hybridized to a single chromosome. The results indicate a high degree of conservation of chromosomal synteny between human and these two Chinese langurs. The human chromosome 2 probe painted the entire euchromatic regions of langur chromosomes 14 and 19. Human chromosome 1 probe hybridized to three regions on langur autosomes, one region on langur chromosome 4 and two regions on langur chromosome 5. Human 19 probe hybridized on the same pattern to one region on chromosome 4 and to two regions on langur chromosome 5, where it alternated with the human chromosome 1 probe. Human 6 and 16 probes both hybridized to one region on each of the two langur autosomes 15 and 18. Only two langur chromosomes (12 and 21) were each labelled by probes specific for two whole human chromosomes (14 and 15 and 21 and 22 respectively). Comparison of the hybridization patterns of human painting probes on these two langurs with the data on other Old World primates suggests that reciprocal and Robertsonian translocations as will as inversions could have occurred since the divergance of human and the langurs from a common ancestor. This comparison also indicates that Asian colobines are karyotypically more closely related to each other that to African colobines.

Bombinakinin M (DLPKINRKGP-bradykinin) is a bradykinin-related peptide purified from skin secretions of the frog Bombina maxima. As previously reported, its biosynthesis is characterized by a tandem repeats with various copy numbers of the peptide and sometimes co-expressed with other structure-function distinguishable peptides. At present study, two novel cDNAs encoding bombinakinin M and its variants were cloned from a cDNA library from the skin of the frog. The encoded two precursor proteins are common in that each contains three repeats of a novel 16-amino acid peptide unit and one copy of kinestatin at their N- and C-terminal parts, respectively. They differ in that the first precursor contains two copies of bombinakinin M and the second one contains one copy of a novel bombinakinin M variant. Bombinakinin M was found to elicit concentration-dependent contractile effects on guinea pig ileum, with an EC50 value of 4 nM that is four times higher than that of bradykinin (1 nM). Interestingly, the synthetic peptide (DYTIRTRLH-amide), as deduced from the 16-amino acid peptide repeats in the newly cloned cDNAs, possessed weak inhibitory activity on the contractile effects of bombinakinin M, but not on that of bradykinin. Furthermore, the newly identified bombinakinin M variant (DLSKMSFLHG-Ile(1)-bradykinin), did not show contractile activity on guinea pig ileum, but showed potentiation effect on the myotropic activity of bradykinin. In reciprocal mutualism systems, the exploitation events by exploiters might disrupt the reciprocal mutualism, wherein one exploiter species might even exclude other coexisting exploiter species over an evolutionary time frame. What remains unclear is how such a community is maintained. Niche partitioning, or spatial heterogeneity among the mutualists and exploiters, is generally believed to enable stability within a mutualistic system. However, our examination of a reciprocal mutualism between a fig species (Ficus racemosa) and its pollinator wasp (Ceratosolen fusciceps) shows that spatial niche partitioning does not sufficiently prevent exploiters from overexploiting the common resource (i.e., the female flowers), because of the considerable niche overlap between the mutualists and exploiters. In response to an exploiter, our experiment shows that the fig can (1) abort syconia-containing flowers that have been galled by the exploiter, Apocryptophagus testacea, which oviposits before the pollinators do; and (2) retain syconia-containing flowers galled by Apocryptophagus mayri, which oviposit later than pollinators. However, as a result of (2), there is decreased development of adult non-pollinators or pollinator species in syconia that have not been sufficiently pollinated, but not aborted. Such discriminative abortion of figs or reduction in offspring development of exploiters while rewarding cooperative individuals with higher offspring development by the fig will increase the fitness of cooperative pollinating wasps, but decrease the fitness of exploiters. The fig fig wasp interactions are diffusively coevolved, a case in which fig wasps diversify their genotype, phenotype, or behavior as a result of competition between wasps, while figs diverge their strategies to facilitate the evolution of cooperative fig waps or lessen the detrimental behavior by associated fig wasps. In habitats or syconia that suffer overexploitation, discriminative abortion of figs or reduction in the offspring development of exploiters in syconia that are not or not sufficiently pollinated will decrease exploiter fitness and perhaps even drive the population of exploiters to local extinction, enabling the evolution and maintenance of cooperative pollinators through the movement between habitats or syconia (i.e., the metapopulations).
