By means of the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral, the field representation of a laser beam modulated by a hard-edged aperture is derived. The near-field and far-field transverse intensity distributions of the beams with different bandwidths are analyzed by using the representation. The numerical calculation results indicate that the amplitudes and numbers of the intensity spikes decrease with increasing bandwidth, and beam smoothing is achieved when the bandwidth takes a certain value in the near field. In the far field, the radius of the transverse intensity distribution decreases as the bandwidth increases, and the physical explanation of this fact is also given. Starting from the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral, the field expressions of apertured polychromatic laser beams with Gaussian and Hermite-Gaussian transverse modes are derived. Influence of the bandwidth on the intensity distributions of the laser beams is analyzed. It is found that when the bandwidth increases, the amplitudes and numbers of the intensity spikes decrease and beam uniformity is improved in the near field and the width of transverse intensity distribution of the apertured beams decreases in the far field. Thus, the smoothing and narrowing effects can be achieved by increasing the bandwidth. Also, these effects are found in the laser beams with Hermite-Gaussian transverse modes as the bandwidth increases.(c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We have proposed a new confocal readout system which is based on the combination of two N-zone circular phase-only transverse superresolving pupils to improve transverse superresolution. The procedure for designing such an improved system is presented. Results of comparisons between the performance of the proposed system and the transverse superresolving pupils indicate that with the same Strehl ratio the former has much higher transverse superresolution capacity and significantly lower sidelobe intensity. The formation of transverse modes in longitudinally pumped miniature slab lasers is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The longitudinally non-uniform gain-guiding is studied by expanding the electric field into the Hermite-Gaussian functions that satisfy boundary conditions of the resonator. Non-Gaussian transversal beam profiles in the near field are found and the beam diameter is reduced when the pump spot becomes smaller. The experimental observation agrees with the theoretical calculation.

To get high output power with good beam quality, a tapered section is introduced to large-mode-area (LMA) Yb-doped fiber laser. Output characteristics of the fiber laser without tapered section and with tapered section are compared experimentally. When the launched pump power is 119.1 W, 77.9 W with M-2 3.08 and 56.4 W with M-2 1.14 can be obtained, respectively. The corresponding slope efficiencies are 71.8% and 54.1%, respectively. Although output power of the tapered fiber laser has 30.6% penalty, brightness of it is as much as 5.28 times of the fiber laser without tapered section. Moreover, spectra of them are measured. It is found that tapered section makes lasing wavelength of the fiber laser shorter. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Quantum-confined Stark effect and built-in dipole moment in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs), which are grown at relative low temperature (460degreesC) and embedded in GaAs p-i-n structure, have been studied by dc-biased electroreflectance. Franz-Keldysh oscillations from the undoped GaAs layer are used to determine the electric field under various bias voltages. Stark shift of -34 meV for the ground-state interband transition of the QDs is observed when the electric field increases from 105 to 308 kV/cm. The separation of the electron and hole states in the growth direction of 0.4 nm, corresponding to the built-in dipole moment of 6.4x10(-29) C m, is determined. It is found that the electron state lies above that of the hole, which is the same as that predicted by theoretical calculations for ideal pyramidal InAs QDs. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

The influence of a transverse magnetic field up to 13 T at 1.6 K on the current-voltage, I (V), characteristics of a doped GaAs/AlAs superlattice was investigated. Current hysteresis was observed in the domain formation regions of the I (V) at zero magnetic field while applied bias was swept in both up (0-6 V) and down (6-0 V) directions. The magnitude of current hysteresis was reduced and finally disappeared with increasing transverse magnetic field. The effect is explained as the modification of the current density versus electric field characteristic by transverse magnetic fields. Calculated results based on the tunnelling current formula in a superlattice support our interpretation.

A systematic investigation is made on the influence of the longitudinal and transverse period distributions of quantum dots on the elastic strain field. The results showed that the effects of the longitudinal period and transverse period on the strain field are just opposite along the direction of center-axis of the quantum dots, and under proper conditions, both effects can be eliminated. The results demonstrate that in calculating the effect of the strain field on the electronic structure, one must take into account the quantum dots period distribution, and it is inadequate to use the isolated quantum dot model in simulating the strain field.

We investigate the Rashba spin-orbit coupling brought by transverse electric field in InSb nanowires. In small k(z) (k(z) is the wave vector along the wire direction) range, the Rashba spin-orbit splitting energy has a linear relationship with k(z), so we can define a Rashba coefficient similarly to the quantum well case. We deduce some empirical formulas of the spin-orbit splitting energy and Rashba coefficient, and compare them with the effective-mass calculating results. It is interesting to find that the Rashba spin-orbit splitting energy decreases as k(z) increases when k(z) is large due to the k(z)-quadratic term in the band energy. The Rashba coefficient increases with increasing electric field, and shows a saturating trend when the electric field is large. As the radius increases, the Rashba coefficient increases at first, then decreases. The effects of magnetic fields along different directions are discussed. The case where the magnetic field is along the wire direction or the electric field direction are similar. The spin state in an energy band changes smoothly as k(z) changes. The case where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the wire direction and the electric field direction is quite different from the above two cases, the k(z)-positive and negative parts of the energy bands are not symmetrical, and the energy bands with different spins cross at a k(z)-nonzero point, where the spin splitting energy and the effective g factor are zero.

We derive the modified rate equations for an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring with two transversely coupled quantum dots (QD's) embedded in two arms in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that the interdot coupling between the two QD's can cause a temporal oscillation in electron occupation at the initial stage of the quantum dynamics, while the source-drain current decays monotonically to a stationary value. On the other hand, the interdot coupling equivalently divides the AB ring into two coupled subrings. That also destroys the normal AB oscillations with a period of 2pi, and generates new and complex periodic oscillations with their periods varying in a linear manner as the ratio between two magnetic fluxes (each penetrates one AB subring) increases. Furthermore, the interference between two subrings is also evident from the observation of the perturbed fundamental AB oscillation.

We investigate the influence of a transverse magnetic field on the current-voltage characteristics of a doped GaAs/AlAs superlattice at 1.6 K. The current transport regimes-stable electric field domain formation and current selfoscillation-are observed with increasing transverse magnetic field up to 13 T. Magnetic-field-induced redistribution of electron momentum and energy is identified as the mechanism triggering the switching over of one process to another lending to a change in the dependence of the effective electron drift velocity on electric field. Simulation yields excellent agreement with observed results.

We investigate high-field ferromagnetic resonance of superparamagnetic particles with uniaxial anisotropy, In this case, since the field is large enough to saturate the magnetization, the thermal orientational fluctuations of the magnetic moment of the particle are negligible. Thus, we derive the dynamic susceptibility of the system on the basis of an independent particle model. High-field ferromagnetic resonance has been performed on fine cobalt particles, The analysis of the spectra obtained at different frequencies allows us to estimate the effective magnetic anisotropy, the gyromagnetic ratio, and the transverse relaxation time. The transverse mode control in oxide confined vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers is discussed by modeling the dielectric aperture as a uniform waveguide and an extra reflectivity at the oxide layer. The phase of the extra reflectivity and the refractive index step can be adjusted to change the mode threshold gain. We calculate the lateral refractive index step from the mode wavelength difference between aperture and perimeter modes, and compare it with that obtained from the weighted average index. The mode reflectivity in terms of the lateral optical confinement factor at the oxide layer is considered in calculating the threshold gain for transverse modes. The numerical results show that higher transverse modes can be suppressed by adjusting the position of a thin AlAs-oxide layer inside a three-quarter-wave layer in the distributed Bragg reflector.
