After illumination with 1-1.3 eV photons during cooling-down, metastable PH modes are observed by IR absorption at 5 K in semi-insulating InP:Fe. They correlate with the photo-injection of holes, but not with a change of the charge state of the K-related centres present at equilibrium. They are explained by a change of the bonding of H, induced by hole trapping, from IR-inactive centres to PH-containing centres, stable only below 80 K. One metastable centre has well-defined geometrical parameters and the other one could be located in a region near from the interface with (Fe,P) precipitates.

We conjugated 2-(hexylthio)thiophene with bipyridine to construct a new heteroleptic polypyridyl ruthenium sensitizer exhibiting a charge-transfer band at 550 nm with a molar extinction coefficient of 18.7 x 10(3) M-1 cm(-1). In contrast to its analogues Z907 and C101, a mesoporous titania film stained with this new sensitizer featured a short light absorption length, allowing for the use of a thin photoactive layer for efficient light-harvesting and conversion of solar energy to electricity. With a preliminary testing, we have reached 11.4% overall power conversion efficiency measured at the air mass 1.5 global conditions. Transient photoelectrical decays and electrical impedance spectra were analyzed to picture the intrinsic physics of temperature-dependent photovoltage and photocurrent.

A mechanistic model is developed to present the photosynthetic response of phytoplankton to irradiance at the physiological level. The model is operated on photosynthetic units (PSU), and each PSU is assumed to have two states: reactive and activated. Light absorption that drives a reactive PSU into the activated state results from the effective absorption of the PSU. Transitions between the two states are asymmetrical in rate. A PSU in the reactive state becomes activated much faster than it recovers from the activated state to the reactive one. The turnover time for an activated PSU to transit into the reactive one is defined by the turnover time of the electron transport chain. The present model yields a photosynthesis-irradiance curve (PE-curve) in a hyperbola, which is described by three physiological parameters: effective cross-section (sigma (PSII)), turnover time of electron transport chain (tau) and number of PSUs (N). The PE-curve has an initial slope of sigma (PSII) x N, a half-saturated irradiance of 1/(sigma (PSII)), and a maximal photosynthetic rate of Nlc at the saturated irradiance. The PE-curve from the present model is comparable to the empirical function based on the target theory described by the Poisson distribution. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

Nickel tungstate (NiWO4) nano-particles were successfully synthesized at low temperatures by a molten salt method, and characterized by Xray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultraviolet visible spectra techniques (UV-vis), respectively. The effects of calcining temperature and salt quantity on the crystallization and development of NiWO4 crystallites were studied. Experimental results showed that the well-crystallized NiWO4 nano-particles with about 30 nm in diameter could be prepared at 270 degrees C with 6:1 mass ratio of the salt to NiWO4 precursor. XRD analysis confirmed that the product was a pure monoclinic phase of NiWO4 with wolframite structure. UV-vis spectrum revealed that NiWO4 nano-particles had good light absorption properties in both ultraviolet and visible light region. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. YAlO3 single crystal doped with Ce3+ at concentration 1% was grown by the temperature gradient technique. The as-grown crystal was pink. After H-2 annealing or air annealing at 1400degreesC for 20 h, the crystal was turned into colorless. We concluded there were two kinds of color centers in the as-grown crystal. One is F+ center attributed to absorption band peaking at about 530 nm, the other is O- center attributed to absorption band peaking at about 390 nm. This color centers model can be applied in explaining the experiment phenomena including the color changes, the absorption spectra changes, and the light yield changes of Ce:YAP crystals before and after annealing. Guest host polymer thin films of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) incorporated with (4'-nitrobenzene)-3-azo-9-ethylcarbazole (NAEC) were fabricated by spin coating and then poled by the method of corona-onset poling at elevated temperature. The absorption mechanism of the polymeric film, which is very important for the optical transmission losses and directly relates to the orientation of chromophore NAEC in polymer PMMA, was investigated in detail. From the UV-visible absorption spectra for NAEC/PMMA film before and after being poled, we determined the change of absorption coefficient kappa with the wavelength and approximately calculated the maximum absorption A(parallel tomax) as 3.46 for incident light propagating parallel through the film, i.e. the ordinary polarized light, which cannot be directly measured in the spectro photometer. Device-quality a-Si:H films were prepared by glow discharge CVD with pure or H-diluted silane as well as by hot-wire CVD. The hydrogen content was varied from similar to 2 to 15 at. %. The Si-H bond absorption and its light-soaking-induced changes were studied by IR and differential IR absorption spectroscopes. The results indicate that the more stable sample exhibits an increase of the absorption at wave number similar to 2000 cm(-1), and the less stable one exhibits a decrease at similar to 2040 cm(-1) and an increase at similar to 1880 cm(-1).

The group velocity of the probe light pulse (GVPLP) propagating through an open Lambda-type atomic system with a spontaneously generated coherence is investigated when the weak probe and strong driving light fields have different frequencies. It is found that adjusting the detuning or Rabi frequency of the probe light field can realize switching of the GVPLP from subluminal to superluminal. Changing the relative phase between the probe and driving light. elds or atomic exit and injection rates can lead to GVPLP varying in a wider range, but cannot induce transformation of the property of the GVPLP. The absolute value of the GVPLP always increases with Rabi frequency of the driving light field increasing. For subluminal and superluminal propagation, the system always exhibits the probe absorption, and GVPLP is mainly determined by the slope of the steep dispersion.

Bi-doped BaF2 crystal was grown by the temperature gradient technique and its spectral properties were investigated. The absorption, emission and excitation spectra were measured at room temperature. Two broadband emissions centered at 1070 and 1500 nm were observed in Bi-doped BaF2 crystal. This extraordinary luminescence should be ascribed to Bi-related centers at distinct sites. We suggest Bi2+ or Bi+ centers adjacent to F vacancy defects are the origins of the observed NIR emissions. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

An analytical fluid model for resonance absorption during the oblique incidence by femtosecond laser pulses on a small-scale-length density plasma [k(0)L is an element of(0.1,10)] is proposed. The physics of resonance absorption is analyzed more clearly as we separate the electric field into an electromagnetic part and an electrostatic part. It is found that the characteristics of the physical quantities (fractional absorption, optimum angle, etc.) in a small-scale-length plasma are quite different from the predictions of classical theory. Absorption processes are generally dependent on the density scale length. For shorter scale length or higher laser intensity, vacuum heating tends to be dominant. It is shown that the electrons being pulled out and then returned to the plasma at the interface layer by the wave field can lead to a phenomenon like wave breaking. This can lead to heating of the plasma at the expanse of the wave energy. It is found that the optimum angle is independent of the laser intensity while the absorption rate increases with the laser intensity, and the absorption rate can reach as high as 25%. An analytical fluid model for JxB heating during the normal incidence by a short ultraintense linearly polarized laser on a solid-density plasma is proposed. The steepening of an originally smooth electron density profile as the electrons are pushed inward by the laser is included self-consistently. It is shown that the JxB heating includes two distinct coupling processes depending on the initial laser and plasma conditions: for a moderate intensity (a <= 1), the ponderomotive force of the laser light can drive a large plasma wave at the point n(e)=4 gamma(0)n(c) resonantly. When this plasma wave is damped, the energy is transferred to the plasma. At higher intensity, the electron density is steepened to a high level by the time-independent ponderomotive force, n(e)> 4 gamma(0)n(c), so that no 2 omega resonance will occur, but the longitudinal component of the oscillating ponderomotive field can lead to an absorption mechanism similar to "vacuum heating." We investigate the group velocity of the probe light pulse in an open V-type system with spontaneously generated coherence. We find that, not only varying the relative phase between the probe and driving pulses can but varying the atomic exit rate or incoherent pumping rate also can manipulate dramatically the group velocity, even make the pulse propagation switching from subluminal to superluminal; the subliminal propagation can be companied with gain or absorption, but the superluminal propagation is always companied with absorption. We have theoretically investigated the phase shift of a probe field for a four-level atomic system interacting successively with two fields tuned near an EIT resonance of an atom, a microwave field, and a coupling field. It has been found that the phase of retrieved signal has been shifted due to the cross-phase modulation when the stored spin wave was disturbed by a microwave. Because of the low relaxation rates of the ground hyperfine state, our proposed technique can impart a large phase rotation onto the probe field with low absorption of retrieved field and very low intensity of the microwave field.
