Physical aging of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) was investigated. Heat flow responses were measured after annealing the amorphous samples that were obtained by quenching the melt into an ice-water bath at just below the glass transition temperature. Isothermal cold crystallization of the aged samples was carried out. The Avrami equation was used to determine the kinetic parameters, and the Avrami constant it is about 2. An Arrhenius form was used to evaluate the relaxation activation energy of physical aging and the transport activation energy of isothermal crystallization. The activation energy of physical aging was similar in magnitude to that observed for the temperature dependence of crystallization under conditions of transportation control. Results obtained were interpreted as purely kinetic effects associated with the glass formation process. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Morphology and culture studies on germlings of Sargassum thunbergii (Mertens et Roth) Kuntze were carried out under controlled laboratory conditions. Growth characteristics of these germlings grown under different temperatures (from 10 to 25A degrees C), irradiances (from 9 to 88 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1)), and under blue and white light conditions are described. The development of embryonic germlings follows the classic "8 nuclei 1 egg" type described for Sargassaceae. Fertilized eggs spent 5-6 h developing into multicellular germlings with abundant rhizoids after fertilization. Under conditions of 20A degrees C, 44 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1) and photoperiod of 12 h, young germlings with one or two leaflets reached 2-3 mm in length after 8 weeks. Temperature variations (10, 15, 20, 25A degrees C) under 88 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1) significantly influenced the growth rate within the first week, although this effect became less obvious after 8 weeks, especially at 15 and 20A degrees C. Variation in germling growth was highly significant under different irradiances (9, 18, 44, 88 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1)) at 25A degrees C. Low temperature (10A degrees C) reduced germling growth. Growth of germlings cultured under blue light was lower than in white light. Optimal growth of these germlings occurred at 25A degrees C and 44 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1).

Edwardsiella tarda is an important aquaculture pathogen that can infect a wide range of marine and freshwater fish worldwide. In this study, a modified E. tarda strain, TX5RM, was selected by multiple passages of the pathogenic E. tarda strain TX5 on growth medium containing the antibiotic rifampicin. Compared to the wild type strain, the rifampicin-resistant mutant TX5RM (i) shows drastically increased median lethal dose and reduced capacity to disseminate in and colonize fish tissues and blood; (ii) exhibits slower growth rates when cultured in rich medium or under conditions of iron depletion; and (iii) differs in the production profile of whole-cell proteins. The immunoprotective potential of TX5RM was examined in a Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) model as a vaccine delivered via intraperitoneal injection, oral feeding, bath immersion, and oral feeding plus immersion. All the vaccination trials, except those of injection, were performed with a booster at 3-week after the first vaccination. The results showed that TX5RM administered via all four approaches produced significant protection, with the highest protection levels observed with TX5RM administered via oral feeding plus immersion, which were, in terms of relative percent of survival (RPS), 80.6% and 69.4% at 5- and 8-week post-vaccination, respectively. Comparable levels of specific serum antibody production were induced by TX5RM-vaccinated via different routes. Microbiological analyses showed that TX5RM was recovered from the gut, liver, and spleen of the fish at 1-10 days post-oral vaccination and from the spleen, liver, kidney, and blood of the fish at 1-14 days post-immersion vaccination. Taken together, these results indicate that TX5RM is an attenuated E. tarda strain with good vaccine potential and that a combination of oral and immersion vaccinations may be a good choice for the administration of live attenuated vaccines. ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized in situ onto cordierite honeycombs by vapor phase transport (VPT) for the first time. The as-synthesized ZSM-5/cordierite honeycombs were impregnated with IrCl3 and tested for NOx reduction with a simulated exhaust gas as the reducing agent. Under the conditions of excess oxygen, the Ir/ZSM-S/cordierite monolith catalyst exhibited NO reduction of 73% at a temperature of 573 K and a space velocity of 20,000 h(-1).
