Partially N-methylated polyaniline (NMPAn) is used instead of polyaniline (PAn) to make a composite with organodisulfides for cathodes of lithium secondary batteries. NMPAn displays a better electrocatalytic effect on the redox processes of organodisulfides than PAn. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A variety of cokes pretreated at different temperatures are used as anodic materials and their electrochemical characteristics are examined by cyclic voltammetry. It is found that for some cokes such as petroleum coke (preheated at 1300 degrees C), pitch coke (1300 degrees C), needle coke (1900 degrees C), metallurgical coke (1900 degrees C), high capacity and cyclic efficiency are achieved. Needle coke (1900 degrees C) and metallurgical coke (1900 degrees C) in particular give a capacity of over 200 mAh/g and a cyclic efficiency of nearly 100%, whereas poor performance is exhibited by those pretreated at higher or lower temperatures, e.g., petroleum cokes (500 degrees C, 2800 degrees C), pitch coke (500 degrees C) and needle coke (2800 degrees C). The cyclic voltammograms show two electrochemical processes, one at about 0.1 V vs. Li+/Li which is electrochemically reversible, and may be attributed to the intercalation/deintercalation of lithium ions while the other, at about 0.6 V vs. Li+/Li, is electrochemically irreversible and may be assigned to the decomposition of the electrolyte solvent, which leads to formation of the passive film on the anode surface. The experimental results strongly suggest that the pretreatment temperature of cokes and of the solvent are determining factors for the growth, structure and properties of the passive film.

The electronic structure of a microporous titanosilicate framework, ETS-10 is calculated by means of a first-principles self-consistent method. It is shown that without the inclusion of the alkali atoms whose positions in the framework are unknown, ETS-10 is an electron deficient system with 32 electrons per unit cell missing at the top of an otherwise semiconductor-like band structure. The calculated density of slates are resolved into partial components. It is shown that the states of the missing electrons primarily originate from the Ti-O bond. The local density of states of the Ti-3d orbitals in the ETS-10 framework is quite different from the perovskite BaTiO3. The possibilities of ETS-10 crystal being ferroelectric or having other interesting properties are discussed.

The structure of EST-10, a member of synthetic microporous titanosilicates, was recently determined by an ingenious combination of experimental and simulational techniques. However, the locations of the alkali atoms in the framework remain elusive and its electronic structure is totally unknown. Based on first-principles local density calculations, the possible locations of the alkali atoms are identified and its electronic structure and bonding fully elucidated. ETS-10 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 2.33 eV. The Na atoms are likely to locate inside the seven-member ring pore adjacent to the one-dimensional Ti-O-Ti-O- chain.

A simultaneous reduction SO42- to S2- by 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate under hydrothermal conditions produced a new binuclear copper(II) coordination polymer [CuS(4,4'-bipy)](n) (4,4-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine) (1). Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that compound I consisted of sulfur-bridged binuclear copper(II) units with Cu-Cu bonding which were combined with 4,4-bipy to generate a three-dimensional network constructed from mutual interpenetration of two-dimensional (6,3) nets. Crystal data for 1:C10H8CuN2S, tetragonal 14(1)/acd, a = 14.0686(5) Angstrom, b = 14.0686(5) Angstrom, c = 38.759(2) Angstrom, Z = 32. Other characterizations by elemental analysis, IR, EPR and TGA analysis were also described in this paper.

This paper presents results concerning structure and electrochemical characteristics of the La0.67Mg0.33 (Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1) (x) (x=2.5-5.0) alloy. It can be found from the result of the Rietveld analyses that the structures of the alloys change obviously with increasing x from 2.5 to 5.0. The main phase of the alloys with x=2.5-3.5 is LaMg2Ni9 phase with a PuNi3-type rhombohedral structure, but the main phase of the alloys with x=4.0-5.0 is LaNi(5)phase with a CaCu5-type hexagonal structure. Furthermore, the phase ratio, lattice parameter and cell volume of the LaMg2Ni9 phase and the LaNi5 phase change with increasing x. The electrochemical studies show that the maximum discharge capacity increases from 214.7 mAh/g (x=2.5) to 391.1 mAh/g (x=3.5) and then decreases to 238.5 mAh/g (x=5.0). As the discharge current density is 1,200 mA/g, the high rate dischargeability (HRD) increases from 51.1% (x=2.5) to 83.7% (x=3.5) and then decreases to 71.6% (x=5.0). Moreover, the exchange current density (I-0) of the alloy electrodes first increases and then decrease with increasing x from 2.5 to 5.0, which is consistent with the variation of the HRD. The cell volume reduces with increasing x in the alloys, which is detrimental to hydrogen diffusion and accordingly decreases the low-temperature dischargeability of the alloy electrodes.

ZrO2 thin films were deposited bill using an electron beam evaporation technique on three kinds of lithium triborate (LiB3O5 or LBO) substrates with the surfaces at specified crystalline orientations. The influences of the LBO structure on the structural and optical properties of ZrO2 thin films are studied by spectrophotometer and x-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the substrate structure has obvious effects on the structural end optical properties of the film: namely. the ZrO2 thin film deposited on the X-LBO, Y-LBO and Z-LBO orients to m(-212), m(021) and o(130) directions. It is also found that the ZrO2 thin film with m(021) has the highest refractive index and the least lattice misfit.

The effect of sulfur vapor pressure in preparing the FeS2 films has been discussed and some incongruous views about sulfur pressure have been clarified in this paper based on experimental results and theoretical analysis. It is shown that lower sulfur pressures than the saturation value only result in poorer crystallization and worse performances, and in other words the FeS2 films could be optimized through improving the sulfur pressure till the saturation point. However for a certain temperature the sulfur pressure is limited by its saturated vapor pressure, and further increase of the sulfur quantity reacted with Fe films has little influence on the structure and properties of the pyrite films. The microstructures in iron- and sulphur-doped InP crystals were studied using both electron microscopy and electron diffraction. A modulated structure has been found in S-doped InP crystal, where the commensurate modulations corresponded to periodicities of 0.68 nm and 0.7 nm in real space and were related to the reflections of the cubic lattice in [111] and [113BAR] directions; they were indexed as q111* = 1/2(a* + b* + c*) and q113BAR* = 1/4(-a* - b* + 3c*), respectively. Single atomic layers of iron precipitate were observed, with preferred orientations along which precipitates are formed. Simulated calculations by means of the dynamical theory of electron diffraction using models for the precipitate structure were in good agreement with our experimental results. The relation between the modulated structure and the precipitates is also discussed.
