A new solid solution system of Al in WC, with the stoichiometry of (W1-xAlx)C (x = 0.10, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 0.86), has been synthesized by a solid-state reaction between W1-xAlx alloys and carbon at around 1673 K in vacuum. Environment scanning electron microscope, energy- dispersive analysis of X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma analyses are used to certify the formation of the products. The mechanism of the solid-state reaction is also discussed. (W1-xAlx)C is identified to crystallize in the hexagonal space group P6m2 (No. 187) and belongs to the WC structure type. The atoms of W and Al occupy the same lattice site (la site) in the cell of (W1-xAlx)C. The cell parameters for each specimen in the phase of W-AI-C are quite close to that of WC, while their densities are far lower than that of WC.

The electron affinities and ionization potentials of 4d and 5d transition metal atoms were studied by CCSD(T), MP2 and density functional methods. The calculated results indicate that density functional method B3LYP has the best overall performance in predicting both electron affinity and ionization potential. SVWN gives largest IP and EA for 4d and 5d atoms. For the two basis sets used in this study, LANL2DZ and SDD, the performance of B3LYP/SDD combination is better than B3LYP/LANL2DZ, in particular for electron affinity calculation.

Surface tension and density of NaCl-NaF-RE2O, melts have been measured by means of maximum buble pressure and Archimedes methods. The results are expressed by two mathematic models. Mass fraction of RE2O5 in the melts from 0.0 to 0.6% and that of NaF/NaCl, 50-90%. This investigation shows that there might be com plexes in the melts. The information obtained can be used as a reference in the preparation of Al-RE alloys.

In laboratory conditions, effects of rearing temperature and stocking density were examined on hatching of fertilized egg and growth of auricularia larvae of Apostichopus japonicus respectively. Data series like larval length and density, metamorphic time, and survival rate of the larvae were recorded. Statistics showed that for A. japonicus, survival rate (from fertilized egg to late auricularia) decreased significantly with the increasing rearing temperature (P < 0.05). At different temperatures SGR was statistically significant as well (P < 0.05) from day 1, and maximal SGR was found on day 9 at 24A degrees C (159.26 +/- 3.28). This study clearly indicated that at low temperature (< 24A degrees C), metamorphic rate was remarkably higher than at higher temperature (> 26A degrees C). Hatching rate was significantly different between 0.2-5 ind./ml groups and 20-50 ind./ml groups. Rearing larvae at the higher density had the smaller maximal-length, whereas needed longer time to complete metamorphosis. This study suggested that 21A degrees C and 0.4 ind./ml can be used as the most suitable rearing temperature and stocking density for large -scale artificial breeding of A. japonicus's larvae.
