In the plasma processing of ultrafine particles of material, the heat transfer and force are considerably affected by particle charging. In this communication a new model, including thermal electron emission and incorporating the effect of electric field near the particle surface, is developed for metallic spherical particles under the condition of a thin plasma sheath. Based on this model, the particle floating potential, and thus the heat transfer and force, can be detemined more accurately and more realistically than previously.

In this paper, a new computational scheme for solving flows in porous media was proposed. The scheme was based on an improved CE/SE method (the space-time Conservation Element and Solution Element method). We described porous flows by adopting DFB (Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy) equation. The comparison between our computational results and Ghia's confirmed the high accuracy, resolution, and efficiency of our CE/SE scheme. The proposed first-order CE/SE scheme is a new reliable way for numerical simulations of flows in porous media. After investigation of effects of Darcy number on porous flow, it shows that Darcy number has dominant influence on porous flow for the Reynolds number and porosity considered.

A diode stack end-pumped Nd:YVO4 slab laser at 1342 nm with near-diffraction-limited beam quality by using a hybrid resonator was presented. At a pump power of 139.5 W, laser power of 35.4 W was obtained with a conversion efficiency of 25.4% of the laser diode to laser output. The beam quality M-2 factors were measured to be 1.2 in the unstable direction and 1.3 in the stable direction at the output power of 29 W. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Single-frequency output power of 7.3 W at 2.09 mu m from a monolithic Ho:YAG nonplanar ring oscillator (NPRO) is demonstrated. Resonantly pumped by a Tm-doped fiber laser at 1.91 mu m, the Ho:YAG NPRO produces 71% of slope efficiency with respect to absorbed pump power and nearly diffraction-limited output with a beam quality parameter of M-2 approximate to 1.1. The mode frequency and the quality factor of nanowire cavities are calculated from the intensity spectrum obtained by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique and the Pade approximation. In a free-standing nanowire cavity with dielectric constant epsilon = 6.0 and a length of 5 mu m, quality factors of 130, 159, and 151 are obtained for the HE11 modes with a wavelength around 375 nm, at cavity radius of 60, 75, and 90 nm, respectively. The corresponding quality factors reduce to 78, 94, and 86 for a nanowire cavity standing on a sapphire substrate with a refractive index of 1.8. The mode quality factors are also calculated for the TE01 and TM01 modes, and the mode reflectivities are calculated from the mode quality factors.

X-ray diffraction, as an effective probe and simple method, is used to ascertain the precise control of the epilayer thickness and composition. Intersubband absorption from the whole structure of the QC laser is used to monitor the wavelength of the QC laser and the material quality. Path for growth of high-quality InP-based InGaAs/InAlAs quantum cascade laser material is realized. The absorption between two quantized energy levels is achieved at similar to4.7 mum. Room temperature laser action is achieved at lambda approximate to 5.1 - 5.2 mum. For some devices, if the peak output power is kept at 2 mW, quasi-continuous wave operation at room temperature can persist for more than I It. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
