Isolated transition metal ions/oxides in molecular sieves and on surfaces are a class of active sites for selective oxidation of hydrocarbons. Identifying the active sites and their coordination structure is vital to understanding their essential role played in catalysis and designing and synthesizing more active and selective catalysts. The isolated transition metal ions in the framework of molecular sieves (e.g., TS-1, Fe-ZSM-5, and V-MCM-41) or on the surface of oxides (e.g., MoO3/Al2O3 and TiO2/SiO2) were successfully identified by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy. The charge transfer transitions between the transition metal ions and the oxygen anions are excited by a UV laser and consequently the UV resonance Raman effect greatly enhances the Raman signals of the isolated transition metal ions. The local coordination of these ions in the rigid framework of molecular sieves or in the relatively flexible structure on the surface can also be differentiated by the shifts of the resonance Raman bands. The relative concentration of the isolated transition metal ion/oxides could be estimated by the intensity ratio of Raman bands. This study demonstrates that the UV resonance Raman spectroscopy is a general technique that can be widely applied to the in-situ characterization of catalyst synthesis and catalytic reactions. The reaction mechanism of Pd(O)-catalyzed allene bis-selenation reactions is investigated by using density functional methods. The overall reaction mechanism has been examined. It is found that with the bulkier PMe3 ligand, the rate-determining step is the reductive elimination process, while allene insertion and reductive elimination processes are competitive for the rate-determining step with the PH3 ligand, indicating the importance of the ligand effect. For both cis and trans palladium complexes, allene insertion into the Pd-Se bond of the trans palladium complex using the internal carbon atom attached to the selenyl group is prefer-red among the four pathways of allene insertion processes. The formation of sigma-allyl and pi-allyl palladium complexes is favored over that of the sigma-vinyl palladium species. By using methylallene, the regioselectivity of monosubstituted allene insertion into the Pd-Se bond is analyzed.

A series of novel, long-chain-substituted, porphyrin derivatives, meso-tetra (4-alkylamidophenyl) porphyrin ligands and their Zn complexes (alkyl = 8,10,12,14,16,18) were prepared by acylation of the amino groups of 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin by alkyl chloride. Mesomorphism was investigated by DSC, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Only ligands containing chains > 12 carbon atoms displayed liquid crystalline behaviour, which exhibited a high phase transition temperature and a broad mesophase temperature span, Zn complexes showed no liquid crystalline behaviour. Cyclic voltammetry, luminescence spectra and surface photovoltage spectroscopy revealed that covalent linking of an alkylamido group to the tetraphenylporphyrin molecule influences, significantly, the properties of the porphyrin macrocycle.

Stoichiometric reactions between mesityl azide (MesN(3), Mes = 2,4,6-C6H2Me3) and amino-phosphine ligated rare-earth metal alkyl, LLn(CH2SiMe3) (2)(THF) (L = (2,6-C6H3Me2)NCH2C6H4P(C6H5)(2); Ln = Lu (1a), Sc (1b)), amide, LLu(NH(2,6-(C6H3Pr2)-Pr-i))(2)(THF) (2) and acetylide at room temperature gave the amino-phosphazide ligated rare-earth metal bis(triazenyl) complexes, [L(MesN(3))]Ln[(MesN(3))-(CH2SiMe3)](2) (Ln = Lu (3a); Sc (3b)), bis(amido) complex [L(MesN3)] Lu[NH(2,6-C6H3 Pr-i(2))](2) (4), and bis(alkynyl) complex (5) (L(MesN(3))Lu (C CPh)(2))(2), respectively. The triazenyl group in 3 coordinates to the metal ion in a rare eta(2)-mode via N-beta and N-gamma atoms, generating a triangular metallocycle. The amino-phosphazide ligand, L(MesN(3)), in 3, 4 and 5 chelates to the metal ion in a eta(3)-mode via N-alpha and N-gamma atoms. In the presence of excess phenylacetylene, complex 3a isomerized to 3', where the triazenyl group coordinates to the metal ion in a eta(3) mode via Na and Ng atoms.

Treatment of anilido-phosphinimine-ligated yttrium mono(alkyl) complex 1a, LY(CH2Si(CH3)(3))(THF) (L = o-(2,6-(C6H3Pr2)-Pr-i)NC6H4P(C6H4)(C6H5)N(2,4,6-C6H2Me3)), with 2 equiv of phenylsilane in DME afforded methoxy-bridged complex 2, [LY(mu-OCH3)](2), via the corresponding hydrido intermediate. When excess isoprene was added to the mixture of la and phenylsilane, a eta(3)-isopentene product, 3, LY(CH2C(CH3)=CHCH3)(THF), was isolated. A lutetium chloride, LLuCl(DME) (4), was generated through the reaction of lutetium mono(alkyl) complex 1b, LLu(CH2Si(CH3)(3))(THF), with [Ph3C]-[B(C6F5)(4)]center dot LiCl accompanied by the formation of [Li(DME)(3)](+)[B(C6F5)(4)](-). Metathesis reaction of 1b with excess AlMe3 at room temperature gave a methyl-terminated counterpart, 5, LLu(CH3)(THF)(2). In all these reactions, the Ln-C-phenyl bonds of complexes 1 remained untouched.

A series of novel vanadium(III) complexes bearing iminopyrrolide chelating ligands [2-(RN=CH)C4H3N]V(THF)(2)Cl-2 (2a: R = cyclohexyl; 2b: R = Ph; 2c: R = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3); 2d: R = p-CF3C6H4; 2e: R = C6F5) have been synthesized and characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that complexes 2a, 2c and 2e adopt an octahedral geometry around the vanadium center. In the presence of Et2AlCl as a co-catalyst, these complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 48.6 kg PE mmol(V)(-1) h(-1) bar(-1) for ethylene polymerization, and produced high molecular weight polymers. 2a-e/Et2AlCl catalytic systems were tolerant to elevated temperature (70 degrees C) and yielded unimodal polyethylenes, indicating the single site behaviour of these catalysts. By pre-treating with equimolar amounts of alkylaluminums, functional alpha-olefin 10-undecen-1-ol can be efficiently incorporated into polyethylene chains. 10-Undecen-1-ol incorporation can easily reach 15.8 mol% under the mild conditions.

Bond distances, vibrational frequencies, dipole moments, dissociation energies, electron affinities, and ionization potentials of NIX (XM = Y-Cd, X = F, Cl, Br, I) molecules in neutral, positively, and negatively charged ions were studied by density functional method, B3LYP. The bonding patterns were analyzed and compared with both the available data and across the series. It was found that besides ionic component, covalent bonds are formed between the 4d transition metal s, d orbitals, and the p orbital of halogen. For both neutral and charged molecules, the fluorides have the shortest bond distance, iodides the longest. Although the opposite situation is observed for vibrational frequency, that is, fluorides have the largest value, iodides the smallest. For neutral and anionic species, the dissociation energy tends to decrease with the increasing atomic number from Y to Cd, suggesting the decreasing or weakening of the bond strength. For cationic species, the trend is observed from Y to Ag.

The reaction mechanisms of the H-2 with the homonuclear dimers M-2 (Cu, Ag, Au) and the heteronuclear dimers PdM (M = Cu, Ag, Au) were studied by use of density functional theory. For the H-2 reactions with homonuclear dimers M-2 (Cu, Ag, Au), it was found that it is easier for Au-2 to dissociate the hydrogen molecule compared with Cu-2 and Ag-2. For H-2 reactions with the heteronuclear dimers PdM (M = Cu, Ag, An), the hydrogen molecule can be easily dissociated at Pd site, rather than at noble metal site.

Bond distances, dissociation energies, ionization potentials and electron affinities of 4d transition metal monoxides from YO to CdO and their positive and negative ions were studied by use of density functional methods B3LYP, BLYP, B3PW91, BPW91, B3P86, BP86, SVWN, MPW1PW91 and PBE1PBE. It was found that calculated properties are highly dependent on the functionals employed, especially for dissociation energy. For most neutral species, pure density functionals BLYP, BPW91 and BP86 have good performance in predicting dissociation energy than hybrid density functionals B3LYP, B3PW91 and B3P86. In addition, BLYP gives the largest bond distance compared with other density functional methods, while SVWN gives shortest bond distance, largest dissociation energy and electron affinity. For the ground state, the spin multiplicity of the charged species can be obtained by +/- 1 of their corresponding neutral species.
