An on-line sample introduction technique in capillary gas chromatograph (CGC) for the analysis of high-pressure gas-liquid mixtures has been designed and evaluated. A sample loop of 0.05 muL and a washing solvent loop of 0.5 muL are mounted on a 10-port switching valve, which serves as the injection valve. A capillary resistor was connected to the vent of sample loop in order to maintain the pressure of the sample. Both the sample and the washing solvent are transferred into the split-injection port through a narrow bore fused silica capillary inserted into the injection liner through a septum. The volume of the liner is used both as the pressure-release damper and evaporation chamber of the sample. On-line analysis of both reactants and resultants in ethylene olimer reaction mixture at 5 MPa was carried out, which demonstrated the applicability of the technique. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. A series of salicylaldimine-based neutral Ni(II) complexes (3a-j) [ArN = CH(C6H40)]Ni(PPh3)Ph [3a,Ar = C6H5; 3b,Ar = C6H4F(o); 3c, Ar = C6H4F(m); 3d, Ar = C6H4F(p); 3e, Ar = C6H3F2(2,4); 3f, Ar = C6H3F2(2,5); 3g, Ar = C6H3F2(2,6); 3h, Ar = C6H3F2(3,5); 3i, Ar = C6H2F3(3,4,5); 3j, Ar = C6H5] have been synthesized in good yield, and the structures of complexes 3a and 3i have been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Using modified methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst, these neutral Ni(II) complexes exhibited high catalytic activities for the vinylic polymerization of norbornene.

A series of (alpha-diimine)nickel(II) complexes [ArN = C(Nap)C = NAr]NiBr2 (Nap = 1,8-naphthdiyl, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3, 3a; Ar = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2 3b; Ar = 2,6-Me-2-4-tBuC(6)H(2), 3c; Ar 2,6-Me-2-4-BrC6H2, 3d; Ar = 2,6-Me-2-4-ClC6H2, 3e; Ar 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3), 3f; Ar = 2,4,6-iPr(3)C(6)H(2), 3g; Ar = 2,6-iPr-4-BrC6H2, 3h) have been synthesized, characterized, and investigated as precatalysts for ethylene polymerization in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO).

Silica and Merrifield resin were used as carriers for the support of alpha-diimine nickel(II) precatalysts for ethylene polymerization. The alpha-diimine ligands containing allyl were modified by introducing the reactive Si-Cl end-group, allowing their immobilization via a direct reaction of the Si-Cl groups with the silanols on silica surface or the hydroxyls on the ethanolamine-modified Merrifield resin. The resulting supported alpha-diimine ligands were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques (NMR and Fr-IR).

A series of amino-pyrrolide ligands (1-4a) and their derivatives aminothiophene ligand (5a), amino-indole ligand (6a) were prepared. Chromium catalysts, which were generated in situ by mixing the ligands with CrCl3(thf)(3) in toluene, were tested for ethylene polymerization. The preliminary screening results revealed that the tridentate amino-pyrrolide ligands containing soft pendant donor, 3a, 4a/CrCl3(thf)(3) systems displayed high catalytic activities towards ethylene polymerization in the presence of modified methyaluminoxane. The electronic and steric factors attached to the ligand backbone significantly affected both the catalyst activity and the polymer molecular weight. Complex 4b was obtained by the reaction of CrCl3(thf)(3) with one equivalent of the lithium salts of 4a, which was the most efficient ligand among the tested ones. The effect of polymerization parameters such as cocatalyst concentration, ethylene pressure, reaction temperature, and time on polymerization behavior were investigated in detail. The resulting polymer obtained by 4b display wax-like and possess linear structure, low molecular weight, and unimodal distribution.

alpha-Diimine nickel catalyst hearing two allyl groups [ArN=C](2)C10H6NiBr2 (Ar = 4-allyl-2,6-(i-Pr)(2)C6H2)] (Cat-I) has been synthesized and characterized. The corresponding polymer-incorporated nickel catalysts PC and the SiO2-supported shell-core structure catalyst SC-1 were obtained by the co-polymerization of the olefin groups of Cat-1 with styrene in the presence of a radical initiator. Radical co-polymerizations with styrene in Solution were investigated in detail, and the compositions and molecular weight of the copolymers were determined. All three types of catalysts (Cat-1, PC and SC-1) have been investigated for ethylene polymerization. These catalysts were found to exhibit high activity in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a co-catalyst. Among them, the polymer-incorporated PC and SiO2 shell-core catalyst SC-1 displayed very high activity (similar to2.62 and similar to1.11 kg (mmol Ni)(-1) h(-1), respectively) with product molecular weights (M,) in the range 26 x 10(4) to 47 x 10(4) under 0.1 MPa ethylene pressure. The particle morphology of polyethylene produced by the shell-core structure catalyst SC-1 was improved.

A series of alpha-diimine nickel(II) complexes containing chloro-substituted ligands, [(Ar)N=C(C10H6)C=N(Ar)]NiBr2 (4a, Ar = 2,3-C6H3Cl2; 4b, Ar = 2,4-C6H3Cl2; 4c, Ar = 2,5-C6H3Cl2; 4d, Ar = 2,6-C6H3Cl2; 4e, Ar = 2,4,6-C6H2Cl3) and [(Ar)N=C(C10H6)C=N(Ar)](2)NiBr2 (5a, Ar = 2,3-C6H3Cl2; 5b, Ar = 2,4-C6H3Cl2; 5c, Ar = 2,5-C6H3Cl2), have been synthesized and investigated as precatalysts for ethylene polymerization. In the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, these complexes are highly effective catalysts for the oligomerization or polymerization of ethylene under mild conditions. The catalyst activity and the properties of the products were strongly affected by the aryl-substituents of the ligands used. Depending on the catalyst structure, it is possible to obtain the products ranging from linear alpha-olefins to high-molecular weight polyethylenes.

A series of 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl iron and cobalt complexes bearing p-substituent [2,6-(ArN=CMe)(2)C5H3N]-MCl2 (Ar=2,6-Me2C6H3, 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, 2,6-Me-2-4-BrC6H2, 2,6-Me-2-4-ClC6H2, 2,4-Me-2-6-BrC6H2, 2,4-Me-(2)-6-ClC6H2, while M=Fe, Co) have been synthesized and investigated as catalysts for ethylene polymerization in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst. The electron effect and positions of the substitueni of pyridinebisimine ligands were observed to affect considerably catalyst activity and polymer property.

The unsymmetrical allyl containing post-metallocene complex [ArN = C( Me)] [(ArN)-N-' = C(Me)]C5H3NFeCl2 [Ar = 2,6(i- Pr)(2)C6H3, Ar' = 4-allyl-2,6-(i-Pr)(2)C6H3] (3) has been prepared and characterized. Complex (3) can be co-polymerized with styrene in the presence of radical initiator to produce polymerized post-metallocene catalyst which exhibits high activity for ethylene polymerization (2.5 x 10(6) g PE/mol Fe.h).

Rare earth chlorides were used to catalyze the synthesis of 2-butoxy-3, 4-dihydro-2H-pyran using equimolar acrolein and vinyl butyl either. The cycloadduct is unstable which undergoes catalytic ring opening oligomerization. The way to stabilize the cyclo adduct has been studied, thus high yields of 90-95% were obtained.
