Novel spherical three-dimensional (3D) dendritic gold-polypyrrole nanocomposites were successfully prepared in the presence of an amphiphilic p-toluene sulfonic acid (TSA) as dopant and surfactant via a self-assembly process which is based on the oxidation of pyrrole (Py) and the reduction of the chloroaurate ions, yielding PPy and Au(0) simultaneously. It was found that the probability of obtaining dendritic Au@PPy/TSA nanostructures depended on the concentration of TSA and the rate of addition of the oxidant (HAuCl4), It was also proposed that the supramolecular micelles formed by Py and TSA play the role of a 'soft template' to produce the dendritic Au@PPy/TSA nanocomposites.

A layer-by-layer (LbL) adsorption and polymerization method was developed for the controllable preparation of polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles within ultrathin films. By repetitive adsorption of pyrrole and subsequent polymerization with 12-molybdophosphoric acid, the polyelectrolyte multilayer films containing PPy nanoparticles were fabricated. UV-visible absorption spectrocopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammograras (CVs) were used to characterize the PPy nanoparticles and their multilayer thin films. UV-visible spectra indicate that the growth of PPy nanoparticles was regular and occurred within the polyelectrolyte films. The size of prepared PPy nanoparticles was found by TEM to increase with the increasing of polymerization cycles. The electrochemistry behavior of the multilayer thin films was studied in detail on ITO. The results suggest that the LbL adsorption and polymerization method developed herein provides an effective way to prepare PPy nanoparticles in the polymer matrix.

Polypyrrole (Ppy) was successfully introduced into methyl substituted sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes by polymerization in SPEEK solutions to improve their methanol resistance. Uniform polypyrrole (Ppy) distributed composite membranes were formed by this method by the interaction between SPEEK and Ppy. The properties of the composite membranes were characterized in detail. The composite membranes show very good proton conductive capability (25 degrees C: 0.05-0.06s cm(-1)) and good methanol resistance (25 degrees C: 5.3 x 10(-7) 1.1 x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1)). The methanol diffusion coefficients of composite membranes are much lower than that of pure SPEEK membranes (1.5 x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1)). The composite membranes show very good potential usage in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).

A novel polyelectrolyte-functionalized ionic liquid (PFIL)/poly(4-styrene sulfonate sodium) (PSS) modified electrode composed of the coaxial and coplanar working, reference and counter electrodes, was used to electropolymerize the polypyrrole. The PFIL/PSS was modified on the integrated electrode (IE) and connected by the working, reference and counter electrodes, resulting in an available charge transfer and lower Ohmic potential drop between the working and counter electrodes. Then polypyrrole (PPy) film was successfully prepared electrochemically without any participation of supporting electrolytes, only in a pyrrole monomer solution. The resulting PPy film in PFIL/PSS matrix exhibited a preferable electroactivity. Subsequently, influence of the modifications on the formation of PPy was further discussed. The results indicated that the synergetic cooperation of PFIL and PSS components accomplished such a successful electropolymerization of PPy.

Density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations were carried out to predict the structures and the absorption and emission spectra for porphyrin and a series of carbaporphyrins-carbaporphyrin, adj-dicarbaporphyrin, opp-dicarbaporphyrin, tricarbaporphyrin and tetracarbaporphyrin. The ground- and excited-state geometries were optimized at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) and CIS/6-31g(d) level, respectively. The optimized ground-state geometry and absorption spectra of porphyrin, calculated by DFT and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), are comparable with the available experimental values. Based on the optimized excited-state geometries obtained by CIS/6-31g(d) method, the emission properties are calculated using TDDFT method at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) level. The effects of the substitution of nitrogen atoms with carbon atoms at the center positions of porphyrin are discussed. The results indicate that the two-pyrrole nitrogens are important to the chemical and physical properties for porphyrin.

The characterization of free base porphyrin 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octakis(hexyl-thio) tetraazaporphyrin (H(2)OHTTAP) and its zinc(II) complexes [Zn(II)OHTTAP] containing eight thioether groups at the beta -pyrrole positions of the macrocycle was reported. Results obtained by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry indicated a five-electron reduction in five steps for each complex. They were oxidized in two single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -cation radicals and dications and reduced in three single-electron-transfer steps to yield pi -anion radicals, dianions and trianions, respectively. The redox property of H(2)OHTTAP was unusual as compared to porphyrins (PPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs). Each process was monitored by in situ thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry, which indicated that only the Ligand was electroactive. The existence of the eight hexylthio groups was responsible for the intrastack interactions and enhanced intracolumnar and intercolumnar electron motions, resulting in improved conductivity. The facile synthesis of optically active polypyrrole has been achieved via the enantioselective electropolymerization of pyrrole on indium-tin-oxide-coated glass electrodes in aqueous solution containing D-(+) or L-(-) tartaric acid, (1S)-(+)-10-camphorsulfonic acid and L-lactic acid. The dark films of conducting polypyrroles salt formed under electrostatic conditions (+0.65V vs. Ag/AgCl) exhibited strong circular dichroism (CD) spectra typical of polymers possessing helical chirality. The quantitative reversal of the CD spectrum of the salt grown in (+)-tartaric acid as opposed to (-)-tartaric acid suggests that electropolymerization is highly enantioselective, with one helical screw of the polymer chain being preferentially produced depending on the hand of the tartaric anion incorporated. Poly(ether urethane) cationomers based on poly(oxytetramethylene), 4,4'-bibenzyldiisocyanate, N-methyldiethanolamine as chain extender, and acrylic acid/poly(acrylic acid) as quaternization agent were synthesized. Pyrrole (15 wt.-%) was polymerized in films of the ionomer containing CuCl2. The films were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. The electric conductivity of the film without polypyrrole is 7.5 . 10(-12) Omega(-1)cm(-1), while incorporation of polypyrrole increases the conductivity to 4.5 . 10(-6) Omega(-1) cm(-1).

The ESR of PPy films doped with Co (W2O7)(6)(10-) and CuW12O406- ions were reported and discussed. Results show that heteropolyanions not only play the role of neutralizing electricity in the PPy film, but also interact with the PPy molecular chain to form some adducts. The adducts affect the electronic structure of the PPy film and are unstable at more positive or more negative potentials. Dysonian ESR lineshape was recorded for the dry PPy film with CuW12O406- for the first time.

Reduction of hydrogen peroxide at a glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with sigma-bonded pyrrole iron(III) octaethylporphyrin complex, (OEP)Fe(Pyr), was studied by cyclic voltammetry and a rotating disk electrode. In 0.1N NaOH solution, it is shown that such an (OEP)Fe(Pyr)/GC electrode has a significant catalytic activity towards hydrogen peroxide reduction (E(D) = -0.80 V, k = 0.066 cm s(-1)); however, the electrode stability is low. The deactivation is observed when the reaction charge (Q) is passing through the (OEP)Fe(Pyr)/GC disk electrode. A linear rotation scan method is applied to study the kinetic process by determining the disk electrochemical response (i(D)) to rotation rate (omega) at a definite disk potential (E(D)). Considering that the number of adsorbed electroreduced catalyst molecules (Red) varies according to the disk potential, a factor theta(= Gamma(Red)/(Gamma(Red) + Gamma(Ox))) is introduced to describe the electrode surface area fraction for electroreduced species. The obtained Koutecky-Levich equation is applicable whatever the potential is.

An integrated CaF2 crystal optically transparent infrared (ir) thin-layer cell was designed and constructed without using any soluble adhesive materials. It is suitable for both aqueous and nonaqueous systems, and can be used not only in ir but also in uv-vis studies. Excellent electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical responses were obtained in evaluating this cell by cyclic voltammetry and steady-state potential step measurements for both ir and uv-vis spectrolectrochemistry with ferri/ferrocyanide in aqueous solution, and with ferrocene/ferrocenium in organic solvent as the testing species, respectively. The newly designed ir cell was applied to investigate the electrochemical reduction process of bilirubin in situ, which provided direct information for identifying the structure of the reduction product and proposing the reaction mechanism.

Polypyrrole (PPy) film was synthesized by anodic polymerization of pyrrole onto the surface of platinum electrode in the solution of sodium p-toluene sulfonate (NaTsO). When this film was oxidized anodically in an aqueous solution of adenosine triphosphatle (ATP), the ATP anions were incorporated into the film. Release of ATP From the film could be accomplished by reduction of the film in aqueous electrolyte solution. The total amount of ATP released from the film was determined by UV spectroscopic method.

In this paper, the electrochemical behaviour of molibdosilicic heteropoly complex with dysprosium K10H3[Dy(SiMo11O39)(2)]. xH(2)O [denoted as Dy(SiMo11)(2)] was studied. Voltammetric behavior of this complex was greatly influenced by pH of solutions. The polypyrrole (PPy) film doped with this complex was prepared by electropolymerization of pyrrole in the presence of Dy(SiMo11)(2) under potential cycling conditions. The microenvironment within the PPy film has an effect on the electrochemical behavior of Dy(SiMo11)(2) entrapped in the film. The film electrode can catalyze the reduction of ClO3- and BrO3-.
