The confined crystallization behavior, melting behavior, and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of the poly(ethylene glycol) block (PEG) in poly(L-lactide)poly(ethylene glycol) (PLLA-PEG) diblock copolymers were investigated with wideangle X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The analysis showed that the nonisothermal crystallization behavior changed from fitting the Ozawa equation and the Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deviating from them with the molecular weight of the poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) block increasing. This resulted from the gradual strengthening of the confined effect, which was imposed by the crystallization of the PLLA block. The nucleation mechanism of the PEG block of PLLA15000-PEG5000 at a larger degree of supercooling was different from that of PLLA2500-PEG5000, PLLA5000-PEG5000, and PEG5000 (the numbers after PEG and PLLA denote the molecular weights of the PEG and PLLA blocks, respectively). They were homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous nucleation, respectively.

Isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of three metallocene-catalysed short-chain-branched polyethylene (SCBPE) fractions with different degree of branching were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Narrow molecular weight fractions (M-w = 20,000 and M-w/M-n < 1.15) are used and the degree of branching (CH3 per 1000C) are 1.6, 10.4, 40 respectively. The regime I - II transition temperature are 119.8

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of ethylene terephthalate-ethylene oxide segmented copolymers has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The kinetics of ET-EO segmented copolymer under nonisothermal crystallization conditions has been analyzed by the Ozawa equation. During the crystallization of the high-T-m segments (PET), the low-T-m segments (PEO) act as a noncrystalline diluent, the crystallization behavior of PET obeys the Ozawa theory. When the PEO segments begin to crystallize, the PET phase is always partially solidified and the presence of the spherulitic microstructure of PET profoundly influences the crystallization behavior, which results in that the overall crystallization process does not obey the Ozawa equation. The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in poly(ethylene terephthalate)poly(ethylene oxide) (PETPEO) segmented copolymer and PEO homopolymer has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, as well as transmission electron microscope. The kinetics of PEO in copolymer and PEO homopolymer under nonisothermal crystallization condition has been analyzed by Ozawa equation. The results show that Ozawa equation only describes the crystallization behavior of PEO-6000 homopolymer successfully, but fails to describe the whole crystallization process of PEO in copolymer because the secondary crystallization in the later stage could not be neglected. Due to the constraint of PET segments imposed on the PEO segments, a distinct two stage of crystallization of PEO in copolymer has been investigated by using Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deal with the nonisothermal crystallization data. In the case of PEO-6000 homopolymer, good linear relation for the whole crystallization process is obtained owing to the secondary crystallization does not occur under our experimental condition. The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of Ethylene Terephthalate-Ethylene Oxide (ET-EO) segmented copolymers has been studied with the use of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The kinetics of PEO in ET-EO segmented copolymer under nonisothermal crystallization conditions has been analyzed with the Ozawa equation. The results show that there is no agreement with Ozawa's theoretical predictions in the whole crystallization process owing to the constraint of ET segments imposed on the EO segments. A distinct two-crystallization process has been investigated by using the Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deal with the nonisothermal crystallization data. The value of the Avrami exponent n is independent of the length of soft segments. However, the crystallization rate is sensitive to the length of soft segments. The longer the soft segments, the faster the crystallization will be.

Kinetics of nonisothermal crystallization of poly( beta-hydroxybutyrate) from melt and glassy states were performed by differential scanning calorimetry under various heating and cooling rates. Several different analysis methods were used to describe the process of nonisothermal crystallization. The results showed that both Avrami treatment and a new method developed by combining the Avrami equation and Ozawa equation could describe this system very well. However, Ozawa analysis failed. By using an evaluation method, proposed by Kissinger, activation energies have been evaluated to be 92.6 kJ/mol and 64.6 kJ/mol for crystallization from the glassy and melt state, respectively. The microphase separation, glass transition and crystallization of two series of tetrahydrofuran-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymers (PTHF-b-PMMA), one with a given PTHF block of M(n) = 5100 and the other with a given PTHF block of (M) over bar(n) = 7000, were studied in this present work. In the case of solution-cast materials, the microphase separation of the copolymer takes place first, with crystallization then gradually starting in the formed PTHF microphase. The T-g of the PMMA microphase shows a strong dependence on the molecular weight of the PMMA block, while the T-g of the PTHF microphase shows a strong dependence on the copolymer composition. The non-isothermal crystallization temperature (T-c) of the diblock copolymer decreases rapidly and continuously with the increase in the amorphous PMMA weight fraction; the lowest T-c of the copolymer is ca. 35 K lower than the T-c of the PTHF homopolymer. There also exists a T-c dependence on the molecular weight of the PTHF block. In addition, when the major component of the copolymer is PMMA, a strong dependence of the crystallizability of the copolymer on the molecular weight of the PTHF block is observed; the higher the molecular weight, then the stronger its crystallizability. The melting temperature of the block copolymer is dependent on the copolymer composition and the molecular weight of its crystallizable block. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Isothermal and nonisothermal melt crystallization kinetics of a novel poly(aryl ether ketone), PEDEKK, were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Several kinetic analyses were used to describe the crystallization behavior. The activation energies were determined as 425 and 176 KJ/mol for isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization, respectively. The equilibrium melting point T-m(o) was estimated to be 444 degrees C by using the Hoffman-Weeks approach. The observed crystallization characteristics of PEDEKK were compared with those of the other members of the poly(arpl ether ketone) family.

The isothermal crystallization behavior of poly(L-lactic acid)/organo-montmorillonite nanocomposites (PLLA/OMMT) with different content of OMMT, using a kind of twice-functionalized organoclay (TFC), prepared by melt intercalation process has been investigated by optical depolarizer. In isothermal crystallization from melt, the induction periods (t(i)) and half times for overall PLLA crystallization (100 degrees C <= T-c <= 120 degrees C) were affected by the temperature and the content of TFC in nanocomposites. The kinetic of isothermal crystallization of PLLA/TFC nanocomposites was studied by Avrami theory. Also, polarized optical photomicrographs supplied a direct way to know the role of TFC in PLLA isothermal crystallization process. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns showed the nanostructure of PLLA/TFC material, and the PLLA crystalline integrality was changed as the presence of TFC. Adding TFC led to the decrease of equilibrium melting point of nanocomposites, indicating that the layered structure of clay restricted the full formation of crystalline structure of polymer.

The crystallization behavior of neat PPS and PPS in blends with PMR-POI prepared by melt mixing were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that POI was an effective nucleation agent of the crystallization for PPS. The enthalpy of crystallization of PPS in the blends increased compared with that of neat PPS. During isothermal crystallization from melt, the dependence of relative degree of crystallinity on time was described by the Avrami equation. It has been shown that the addition of POI causes an increase in the overall crystallization rate of PPS; it also changed the mechanism of nucleation of the PHB crystals from homogeneous nucleation to heterogeneous nucleation. The equilibrium melting temperature of PPS and PPS/POI blends were determined. The analysis of kinetic data according to nucleation theories shows that the increase in crystallization rate of PPS in the composite is due to the decrease in surface energy of the extremity surface.

Analyses of the isothermal and nonisothermal melt kinetics for syndiotactic polystyrene have been performed with differential scanning calorimetry, and several kinetic analyses have been used to describe the crystallization process. The regime II-->III transition, at a crystallization temperature of 239degrees, is found. The values of the nucleation parameter K-g for regimes II and III are estimated. The lateral-surface free energy, sigma = 3.24 erg cm(-2), the fold-surface free energy, sigma(e) = 52.3 +/- 4.2 erg cm(-2), and the average work of chain folding, q = 4.49 +/- 0.38 kcal/mol, are determined with the (040) plane assumed to be the growth plane. The observed crystallization characteristics of syndiotactic polystyrene are compared with those of isotactic polystyrene. The activation energies of isothermal and nonisothermal melt crystallization are determined to be DeltaE = -830.7 kJ/mol and DeltaE = -315.9 kJ/mol, respectively.

Isothermal melt and cold crystallization kinetics of PEEKK have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry in two temperature regions. During the primary crystallization process, the relative crystallinity develops with a time dependence described by the Avrami equation, with exponent n = 2 for both melt and cold crystallization. The activation energies are -544.5 and 466.7 kJ/mol for crystallization from the melt and amorphous glassy state, respectively. The equilibrium melting point T-m(o) is estimated to be 371 degrees C by using the Hoffman-Weeks approach. The lateral and end surface free energies derived from the Lauritzen-Hoffman spherulitic growth rate equation are sigma=10 erg/cm(2) and sigma(e) = 60 erg/cm(2), respectively. The work of chain folding q is determined as 3.98 kcal/mol. These observed crystallization kinetic characteristics of PEEKK are compared with those of PEEK. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Melt mixing of nylon 8 with neodymium oxide particles was carried out with a single-screw extruder. The crystal behaviors of plain nylon 6 and the neodymium oxide filled nylon 6 mixture were studied by means of isothermal crystallization kinetic analysis. Isothermal crystallization thermograms obtained by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were analyzed based on the Avrami equation. The neodymium oxide particles acted as a nucleating agent in the mixture. The overall rate of di-isothermal crystallization of the neodymium oxide filled nylon 6 mixture is higher than that of plain nylon 6. The mechanism and modes of plain nylon 6 were the same as those of neodymium oxide filled PA6 mixture.
