The natural frequencies of a cantilever probe can be tuned with an attached concentrated mass to coincide with the higher harmonics generated in a tapping-mode atomic force microscopy by the nonlinear tip-sample interaction force. We provide a comprehensive map to guide the choice of the mass and the position of the attached particle in order to significantly enhance the higher harmonic signals containing information on the material properties. The first three eigenmodes can be simultaneously excited with only one carefully positioned particle of specific mass to enhance multiple harmonics. Accessing the interaction force qualitatively based on the high-sensitive harmonic signals combines the real-time material characterization with the imaging capability. The vibration analysis of an adhered S-shaped microbeam under alternating sinusoidal voltage is presented. The shaking force is the electrical force due to the sinusoidal voltage. During vibration, both the microbeam deflection and the adhesion length keep changing. The microbeam deflection and adhesion length are numerically determined by the iteration method. As the adhesion length keeps changing, the domain of the equation of motion for the microbeam (unadhered part) changes correspondingly, which results in changes of the structure natural frequencies. For this reason, the system can never reach a steady state. The transient behaviors of the microbeam under different shaking frequencies are compared. We deliberately choose the initial conditions to compare our dynamic results with the existing static theory. The paper also analyzes the changing behavior of adhesion length during vibration and an asymmetric pattern of adhesion length change is revealed, which may be used to guide the dynamic de-adhering process. The abnormal behavior of the adhered microbeam vibrating at almost the same frequency under two quite different shaking frequencies is also shown. The Galerkin method is used to discretize the equation of motion and its convergence study is also presented. The model is only applicable in the case that the peel number is equal to 1. Some other model limitations are also discussed.

A limit stop is placed at the elbow of an L-shaped beam whose linear natural frequencies are nearly commensurable. As a result of this hardening device the non-linear system exhibits multiple internal resonances, which involve various degree of coupling between the first five modes of the beam in free vibration. A point load is so placed as to excite several modes and the resulting forced vibration is examined. In the undamped case, three in-phase and two out-of-phase solution branches have been found. The resonance curve is extremely complicated, with multiple branches and interactions between the first four modes. The amplitudes of the higher harmonics are highly influenced by damping, the presence of which can effectively attenuate internal resonances. Consequently parts of the resonance curve may be eliminated, with the resulting response comprising different distinctive branches. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited

The simplified governing equations and corresponding boundary conditions of flexural vibration of viscoelastically damped unsymmetrical sandwich plates are given. The asymptotic solution of the equations is then discussed. If only the first terms of the asymptotic solution of all variables are taken as an approximate solution, the result is identical with that obtained from the Modal Strain Energy (MSE) Method. As more terms of the asymptotic solution are taken, the successive calculations show improved accuracy. With the natural frequencies and the modal loss factors of a damped sandwich plate known, one can calculate the response of the plate to various loads providing a reliable basis for engineering design.

Real-life structures often possess piecewise stiffness because of clearances or interference between subassemblies. Such an aspect can alter a system's fundamental free vibration response and leads to complex mode interaction. The free vibration behaviour of an L-shaped beam with a limit stop is analyzed by using the frequency response function and the incremental harmonic balance method. The presence of multiple internal resonances, which involve interactions among the first five modes and are extremely complex, have been discovered by including higher harmonics in the analysis. The results show that mode interaction may occur if the higher harmonics of a vibration mode are close to the natural frequency of a higher mode. The conditions for the existence of internal resonance are explored, and it is shown that a prerequisite is the presence of bifurcation points in the form of intersecting backbone curves. A method to compute such intersections by using only one harmonic in the free vibration solution is proposed. (C) 1996 Academic Press Limited

By analyzing and comparing the experimental data, the point source moment theory and the cavity theory, it is concluded that the vibrating signals away from the blasting explosive come mainly from the natural vibrations of the geological structures near the broken blasting area. The source impulses are not spread mainly by the inelastic properties (such as through media damping, as believed to be the case by many researchers) of the medium in the propagation pass, but by this structure. Then an equivalent source model for the blasting vibrations of a fragmenting blasting is proposed, which shows the important role of the impulse of the source's time function under certain conditions. For the purpose of numerical simulation, the model is realized in FEM, The finite element results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Piezoelectric actuators are mounted on both sides of a rectangular wing model. Possibility of the improvement of aircraft rolling power is investigated. All experiment projects, including designing the wind tunnel model, checking the material constants, measuring the natural frequencies and checking the effects of actuators, guarantee the correctness and precision of the finite element model. The wind tunnel experiment results show that the calculations coincide with the experiments. The feasibility of fictitious control surface is validated.

In order to understand the dynamic behavior of submarine pipelines exposed to current and the mechanism of the interaction between current-induced vibration and scour of pipelines on a sandy bottom, an experimental investigation is conducted with a small scale model A test model which can be tested in the flume is set up by taking into account the typical working conditions of the pipelines and by applying the similarity theory. The interactions between the shape of the scour hole and the behavior of the pipeline as well as the flow patterns of the current are detailed, and the interaction mechanism outlined. The effect of vibration of the pipeline on the development of dynamic scour at different stages is found out. The proposed experimental method and test results provide an effective means for design of marine pipelines against scouring.

The influence of vibration on thermocapillary convection and critical Marangoni number in liquid bridge of half floating zone was discussed for the low frequency range 0.4-1.5 Hz and the intermediate frequency range 2.5-15 Hz in our previous papers. This paper extends the study to high frequency range 15-100Hz. This ground based experiment was completed on the deck of an electromagnetic vibration machine. The results of our experiment shows when the frequency of the applied acceleration is high enough, the amplitude of the time varying part of the temperature response is disappear and the shape of the free surface of the liquid bridge exhibits no fluctuations due to inertia. The critical Marangoni number which is defined to describe the transitions from a peroidical convection in response to vibration to an oscillatory convection due to internal instability is nearly the same as the critical Marangoni number for oscillatory flow in the absence of vibration.

We conducted a comparative statistical analysis of tetra- through hexanucleotide frequencies in two sets of introns of yeast genes. The first set consisted of introns of genes that have transcription rates higher than 30 mRNAs/h while the second set contained introns of genes whose transcription rates were lower than or equal to 10 mRNAs/h. Some oligonucleotides whose occurrence frequencies in the first set of introns are significantly higher than those in the second set of introns were detected. The frequencies of occurrence of most of these detected oligonucleotides are also significantly higher than those in the exons flanking the introns of the first set. Interestingly some of these detected oligonucleotides are the same as well known "signature" sequences of transcriptional regulatory elements. This could imply the existence of potential positive regulatory motifs of transcription in yeast introns. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the high-frequency echolocation signals from free-ranging Yangtze finless porpoise in the Tian-e-zhou Baiji National Natural Reserve in Hubei Province, China. Signal analysis showed that the Yangtze finless porpoise clicks are typical high-frequency narrow-band (relative width of the frequency spectrum Q=6.6 &PLUSMN; 1.56, N=548) ultrasonic pulses. The peak frequencies of the typical clicks range from 87 to 145 kHz with an average of 125 &PLUSMN; 6.92 kHz. The durations range from 30 to 122 μ s with an average of 68 &PLUSMN; 14.12 μ s. The characteristics of the signals are similar to those of other members of the Phocoenidae as well as the distantly related delphinids, Cephalorhynchus spp. Comparison of these signals to those of the baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), who occupies habitat similar to that of the Yangtze finless porpoise, showed that the peak frequencies of clicks produced by the Yangtze finless porpoise are remarkably higher than those produced by the baiji. Difference in peak frequency between the two species is probably linked to the different size of prefer-red prey fish. Clear double-pulse and multi-pulse reverberation structures of clicks are noticed, and there is no indication of any low-frequency (< 70 kHz) components during the recording period. © 2005 Acoustical Society of America.
