The mechanical properties, electronic structure and phonon dispersion of ground state ThO2 as well as the structure behavior up to 240 GPa are studied using first-principles density-functional theory. Our calculated elastic constants indicate that both the ground-state fluorite structure and high pressure cotunnite structure of ThO2 are mechanically stable. The bulk modulus, shear modulus, and Young's modulus of cotunnite ThO2 are all smaller by approximately 25% compared with those of fluorite ThO2. The Poisson's ratios of both structures are approximately equal to 0.3 and the hardness of fluorite ThO2 is 22.4 GPa. The electronic structure and bonding nature of fluorite ThO2 are fully analyzed, and show that the Th-O bond displays a mixed ionic/covalent character. The phase transition from the fluorite to cotunnite structure is calculated to occur at the pressure of 26.5 GPa, consistent with recent experimental measurement by ldiri et al. [1]. For the cotunnite phase it is further predicted that an isostructural transition takes place in the pressure region of 80-130 GPa.

The results of conductivity, photoconductivity and constant photocurrent method absorption measurements by DC and AC methods in hydrogenated silicon films with mixed amorphous-nanocrystalline structure are presented. A series of diphasic silicon films was deposited by very high frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique, using different hydrogen dilution ratios of silane. The increase of hydrogen dilution ratio results in five orders of magnitude increase of conductivity and a sharp increase of grain volume fraction. The comparison of the absorption spectra obtained by DC and AC methods showed that they are similar for silicon films with the predominantly amorphous structure and films with high grain volume fraction. However we found a dramatic discrepancy between the absorption spectra obtained by DC and AC constant photocurrent methods in silicon films deposited in the regime of the structure transition from amorphous to nanocrystalline state. AC constant photocurrent method gives higher absorption coefficient than DC constant photocurrent method in the photon energy range of 1.2-1.7 eV. This result indicates the possibility of crystalline grains contribution to absorption spectra measured by AC constant photocurrent method in silicon films with intermediate crystalline grain volume fraction. A programmable vision chip with variable resolution and row-pixel-mixed parallel image processors is presented. The chip consists of a CMOS sensor array, with row-parallel 6-bit Algorithmic ADCs, row-parallel gray-scale image processors, pixel-parallel SIMD Processing Element (PE) array, and instruction controller. The resolution of the image in the chip is variable: high resolution for a focused area and low resolution for general view. It implements gray-scale and binary mathematical morphology algorithms in series to carry out low-level and mid-level image processing and sends out features of the image for various applications. It can perform image processing at over 1,000 frames/s (fps). A prototype chip with 64 x 64 pixels resolution and 6-bit gray-scale image is fabricated in 0.18 mu m Standard CMOS process. The area size of chip is 1.5 mm x 3.5 mm. Each pixel size is 9.5 mu m x 9.5 mu m and each processing element size is 23 mu m x 29 mu m. The experiment results demonstrate that the chip can perform low-level and mid-level image processing and it can be applied in the real-time vision applications, such as high speed target tracking.

We present a method for checking the Peres separability criterion in an arbitrary bipartite quantum state rho(AB) within local operations and classical communication scenario. The method does not require noise operation which is needed in making the partial transposition map physically implementable. The main task for the two observers, Alice and Bob, is to measure some specific functions of the partial transposed matrix. With these functions, they can determine the eigenvalues of rho(T)(AB)(B), among which the minimum serves as an entanglement witness.

The thermal entanglement in a two-spin-qutrit system with two spins coupled by exchange interaction is investigated in terms of the measure of entanglement called 'negativity'. We strictly show that for any temperature the entanglement is symmetric with respect to zero magnetic field. The behavior of negativity is presented for four different cases. We find that the entanglement may be enhanced under a nonuniform magnetic field. Because there is not any necessary and sufficient condition for quantum separability in systems of dimension 3 circle times 3, our results are qualitative, not quantitative. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The reactions of sodium p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene (Na5L) and terbium/europium(III) chloride in the presence of pyrazine-N,N'-dioxide (PNNO) in aqueous solutions gave the crystalline complexes 1 and 2. Both structures contain molecular capsules of p-sulfonatocalix[4] arene with PNNO as guest molecules in the cavity of the calix[4]arenes. The molecular capsules are connected through sodium and terbium (or europium) centers forming a three-dimensional framework.

Catalytic NO decomposition on LaSrMn1-x Ni (x) O4+delta (0 a parts per thousand currency sign x a parts per thousand currency sign 1) is investigated. The activity of NO decomposition increases dramatically after the substitution of Ni for Mn, but decreases when Mn is completely replaced by Ni (x = 1.0). The optimum value is at x = 0.8. These indicate that the catalytic performance of the samples is contributed by the synergistic effect of Mn and Ni. O-2-TPD and H-2-TPR experiments are carried out to explain the change of activity. The former indicates that only when oxygen vacancy is created, could the catalyst show enhanced activity for NO decomposition; the latter suggests that the best activity is obtained from catalyst with the most matched redox potentials (in this work, the biggest Delta T and Delta E values).

A series of solid state electrolytes, Ce-5.2 RE0.8 MoO15-delta (RE = Y, La, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er), were synthesized by sol-gel method. Their structures and electrical conductivities were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Raman and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and AC impedance spectroscopy, respectively. The results show that the concentrations of oxygen vacancy increased with increasing x and their conductivity were improved. And the cell parameters increase as the radius of RE3+ increases. Because the ionic radius of doped Dy3+ (0.0908 nm) is closed to that of Ce4+ (0.0920 nm), their oxide has minimal cell elastic straining between RE3+ and oxygen vacancy, and the system has the least association enthalpy, thus the oxide Ce-5.2 Dy-0.8 MoO15-delta exhibits a higher conductivity (7.02 x 10(-3) S/cm) and lower activation energy (1.056 eV) compared to the other doped compounds.

By using a novel high-pressure, high-temperature method, perovskite oxides of La1-xNaxTiO3 (x = 0.05, 0.1-0.8) with mixed valence state were synthesized. XRD analysis shows a cubic cell for the samples. Cell volumes of the samples with 0.1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5 decreases as x increases, and the cell Volume for x = 0.05 is smaller than that for x = 0.1. XPS of surface and EPR measurements indicate that Ti ions are of mixed valence of +3 and +4 and that A-cations vacancies exist in the samples. As x increases, the amount of Ti3+ ions decreases and the amount of A-cations vacancies increases. The valence state of Ti ions can be altered by changing both pressure and temperature. In this study, electrode responses to a large number of electroactive species with different standard potentials at the molybdenum oxide-modified carbon fibre microdisk array (CFMA) electrode were investigated. The results demonstrated that the electrochemical behavior for those redox species with formal potentials more positive than similar to 0.0 V at the molybdenum oxide-modified CFMA electrode were affected by the range and direction of the potential scan, which were different from that at a bare CFMA electrode. If the lower limit of the potential scan was more positive than the reduction potential of the molybdenum oxide film, neither the oxidation nor the reduction peaks of the redox species tested could be observed. This indicates that electron transfer between the molybdenum oxide film on the electrode and the electroactive species in solution is blocked due to the existence of a high resistance between the film and electrolyte in these potential ranges. If the lower limit of the potential scan was more negative than the reduction potential of the molybdenum oxide film (similar to - 0.6 V), the oxidation peaks of these species occurred at the potentials near their formal potentials. In addition, the electrochemical behavior of these redox species at the molybdenum oxide-modified CFMA electrode showed a diffusionless electron transfer process. On the other hand, the redox species with formal potentials more negative than similar to - 0.2 V showed similar reversible voltammetric behaviors at both the molybdenum oxide-modified CFMA electrode and the bare electrode. This can be explained by the structure changes of the film before and after reduction of the film. In addition we also observed that the peak currents of some redox species at the modified electrode were much larger than those at a bare electrode under the same conditions, which has been explained by the interaction between these redox species and the reduction state of the molybdenum oxide film. Perovskite oxides LaTi1-xMgxO3 (x = 0.25, 0.5) were synthesized using high-pressure and-temperature method. LaTi0.75Mg0.25O3 is a new compound. This new synthesis route has some advantages. XRD analysis showed that the x = 0.25 sample belongs to cubic perovskite-type structure and the a = 0.5 sample belongs to orthorhombic perovskite-type structure. EPR measurement indicated that Ti ions were in mixed valence state of +3 and +4. IR measurement indicated that the vibration frequency and width of BO6 octahedron stretching vibration absorption band decreases with the increasing of x. The valence state of Ti ions can be altered by high-pressure and-temperature. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The dependence of the structure of the hosts on the M ion radius in MMgAl10O17 (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Eu, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Sn) system was studied and the luminescence of Eu2+ the mixed phase system was discussed. When M ion radius is less than 0.10 nm, the system MMgAl10O17 constructs by the mixed phases consisting of manegtoplumbite and spinel, alpha-alumina or spinel and alpha-alumina. In the mixed phase of manegtoplumbite and spinel and alpha-alumina, Eu2+ ion preferentially occupies lattice site of the cations in manegtoplumbite well matched with the radius and charge of Eu2+. There exists only d-->f transition emission of Eu2+ and no characteristic emission of Eu3+ occurs in those hosts. In the mixed phase of spinel and alpha-alumina, Eu2+ can enter the lattice site of Mg2+ ion or Al3+ ion and the d-->f and f-->f transition of Eu2+ can been observed respectively. Meanwhile, since the radius and charge of matrix lattice ions substituted by Eu2+ do not match with those of Eu2+, the valence state of Eu2+ is unstable. Eu2+ is partly changed into Eu3+ and the emission of Eu3+ is obviously observed even under the condition of reduction atmosphere. If reaction temperature is more than 1 150 degrees C, Al2O3 forms alpha-Al2O3 structure, the f-->f transition of Eu2+ appears. If reaction temperature is less than 1 150 degrees C, a mixed phase of alpha-Al2O3 and gamma-Al2O3 is formed, the f-->f transition of Eu2+ disappears and a new band emission from d-->f transition of Eu2+ occurs.

A series of LnSrNiO(4)(A(2)BO(4), Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) mixed oxides with K2NiF4 structure, in which A-site(Sr) was partly substituted by individual light rare earth element, was prepared. The solid state physico-chemical properties including crystal structure, defect structure, IR spectrum, valence state of H-site ion, nonstoichiometric oxygen, oxygenous species, the properties of oxidation and reduction etc. as well as the catalytic behavior for NO decomposition on these mixed oxides were investigated. The results show that all of these mixed oxide catalysts have high activity for the direct decomposition of NO(at 900 degrees C the conversion of NO is more than 90%). The effect of the substitution of light rare earth elements at A-site on catalytic behavior for NO decomposition was elucidated.
