Self-assembled InAs quantum dots were prepared on GaAS(100)) substrate in a solid source molecular beam epitaxy system The distribution and topographic images of uncapped dots were studied by atomic force microscope. The statistical result shows that the quantum dots are bimodal distribution. The photoluminescence spectrum results shows that the intensity of small size quantum dots dominated, which may be due to: (1) the state density of large quantum dots lower than that of small quantum dots; (2) the carriers capture rate of large size quantum dots is small relative to that of small ones; (3) there is a large strain barrier between large quantum dots and capping layer, and the large strain is likely to produce the defect and dislocation, resulting in a probability carriers transferring from large quantum dots to small dots that is very small with temperature increasing.

It is important to acquire the composition of Si1-xGex layer, especially that with high Ge content, epitaxied on Si substrate. Two nondestructive examination methods, double crystals X-ray diffraction (DCXRD) and micro-Raman measurement, were introduced comparatively to determine x value in Si1-xGex: layer, which show that while the two methods are consistent with each other when x is low, the results obtained from double crystals X-ray diffraction are not credible due to the large strain relaxation occurring in Si1-xGex layers when Ge content is higher than about 20%. Micro-Raman measurement is more appropriate for determining high Ge content than DCXRD.

The electronic structure of an InAs self-assembled quantum dot in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field is investigated theoretically. The effect of finite offset, valence-band mixing, and strain are taken into account. The hole levels show strong anticrossings. The large strain and strong magnetic field decrease the effect of mixing between heavy hole and light hole. The hole energy levels have in general a weaker field dependence compared with the corresponding uncoupled levels.

Dynamic planar compressive experiments on a typical tough Zr-BMG (Bulk Metallic Glass) were carried out under impact velocity of 500-600 m/sec and strain rate of 10(6)/s. The fracture surface of samples exhibits different fracture patterns at different parts of the sample. At a corner close to the front loading boundary, fracture patterns from the free edge toward the centre changed from equiaxial veins in microscale to periodic corrugations in nanoscale; in the middle of the sample, the fracture surface contains glazed zones laid out orderly along the same boundary. FEM simulation was performed to investigate the stress distributions in the impacted sample under a short duration impact loading. It has revealed that the fracture patterns changing from the free edge toward the centre were resulted from the fracture modes' changing from the tensile dominant fracture to the shear dominant fracture. Whereas at the middle part of the sample, fracture initiated from several parallel shear bands propagating close to the same boundary is due to a large strain or much higher shear stress in this area.

Compressive deformation behavior of the Nd60Fe20Co10Al10 bulk metallic glass was characterized over a wide strain rate range (6.0 x 10(-4) to 1.0x10(3) s(-1)) at room temperature. Fracture stress was found to increase and fracture strain decrease with increasing applied strain rate. Serrated flow and a large number of shear bands were observed at the quasi-static strain rate (6.0 x 10(-4)s(-1)). The results suggest that the appearance of a large number of shear bands is probably associated with flow serration observed during compression; and both shear banding and flow serration are a strain accommodation and stress relaxation process. At dynamic strain rates (1.0 x 10(3) s(-1)), the rate of shear band nucleation is not sufficient to accommodate the applied strain rate and thus causes an early fracture of the test sample. The fracture behavior of the Nd60Fe20Co10Al10 bulk metallic glass is sensitive to strain rate.

alpha-titanium and its alloys with a dual-phase structure (alpha+beta) were deformed dynamically under strain rate of about 10(4) s(-1). The formation and microstructural evolution of the localized shear bands were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results reveal that both the strain and strain rate should be considered simultaneously as the mechanical conditions for shear band formation, and twinning is an important mode of deformation. Both experimental and calculation show that the materials within the bands underwent a superhigh strain rate (9 x 10(5) s(-1)) deformation, which is two magnitudes of that of average strain rate required for shear band formation; the dislocations in the bands can be constricted and developed into cell structures; the phase transformation from alpha to alpha(2) within the bands was observed, and the transformation products (alpha(2)) had a certain crystallographic orientation relationship with their parent; the equiaxed grains with an average size of 10 mu m in diameter observed within the bands are proposed to be the results of recrystallization.

Dislocation models with considering the mismatch of elastic modulus between matrix and reinforcing particles are used to determine the effective strain gradient \ita for particle reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCp) in the present research. Based on Taylor relation and the kinetics of dislocation multiplication, glide and annihilation, a strain gradient dependent constitutive equation is developed. By using this strain gradient-dependent constitutive equation, size-dependent deformation strengthening behavior is characterized. The results demonstrate that the smaller the particle size, the more excellent in the reinforcing effect. Some comparisons with the available experimental results demonstrate that the present approach is satisfactory.

A new phenomenological deformation theory with strain gradient effects is proposed. This theory, which belongs to nonlinear elasticity, fits within the framework of general couple stress theory and involves a single material length scale l. In the present theory three rotational degrees of freedom omega(i) are introduced in addition to the conventional three translational degrees of freedom u(i). omega(i) has no direct dependence upon ui and is called the micro-rotation, i.e. the material rotation theta(i) plus the particle relative rotation. The strain energy density is assumed to only be a function of the strain tensor and the overall curvature tensor, which results in symmetric Cauchy stresses. Minimum potential principle is developed for the strain gradient deformation theory version. In the limit of vanishing 1, it reduces to the conventional counterparts: J(2) deformation theory. Equilibrium equations, constitutive relations and boundary conditions are given in details. Comparisons between the present theory and the theory proposed by Shizawa and Zbib (Shizawa, K., Zbib, H.M., 1999. A thermodynamical theory gradient elastoplasticity with dislocation density Censor: fundamentals. Int. J. Plast. 15, 899) are given. With the same hardening law as Fleck et al. (Fleck, N.A., Muller, G.H., Ashby, M.F., Hutchinson, JW., 1994 Strain gradient plasticity: theory and experiment. Acta Metall. Mater 42, 475), the new strain gradient deformation theory is used to investigate two typical examples, i.e. thin metallic wire torsion and ultra-thin metallic beam bend. The results are compared with those given by Fleck et al, 1994 and Stolken and Evans (Stolken, J.S., Evans, A.G., 1998. A microbend test method for measuring the plasticity length scale. Acta Mater. 46, 5109). In addition, it is explained for a unit cell that the overall curvature tensor produced by the overall rotation vector is the work conjugate of the overall couple stress tensor. An investigation has been made into the plastic deformation behavior of a Monel alloy deformed at high strain rate of 10(5) s(-1) by split Hopkinson bar. The results reveal that there are some equiaxed grains with an average size of 150 nm in diameter in the center of the shear bands, suggesting that this microstructure characteristics be developed by dynamic recrystallization, arising from the deformation and the rapid temperature rise in the band. Analysis shows that the plastic strain rate and the mobile dislocation density play a key role in the new crystallized grain formation and growth. Based on grain boundary energy change and diffusion mechanism, the grain growth kinetics is developed for plastic deformation at a high strain rate.

Macroscopic strain was hitherto considered a necessary corollary of deformation twinning in coarse-grained metals. Recently, twinning has been found to be a preeminent deformation mechanism in nanocrystalline face-centered-cubic (fcc) metals with medium-to-high stacking fault energies. Here we report a surprising discovery that the vast majority of deformation twins in nanocrystalline Al, Ni, and Cu, contrary to popular belief, yield zero net macroscopic strain. We propose a new twinning mechanism, random activation of partials, to explain this unusual phenomenon. The random activation of partials mechanism appears to be the most plausible mechanism and may be unique to nanocrystalline fcc metals with implications for their deformation behavior and mechanical properties.

Plastic stress-strain fields of two types of steel specimens loaded to large deformations are studied. Computational results demonstrate that, owing to the fact that the hardening exponent of the material varies as strain enlarges and the blunting of the crack tip, the well known HRR stress field in the plane strain model can only hold for the stage of a small plastic strain. Plastic dilatancy is shown to have substantial effects on strain distributions and blunting. To justify the constitutive equations used for analysis and to check the precision of computations, the load-deflection of a three-point bend beam and the load-elongation of an axisymmetric bar notched by a V-shaped cut were tested and recorded. The computed curves are in good accordance with experimental data.

The strain energy density criterion due to Sih is used to predict fracture loads of two thin plates subjected to large elastic-plastic deformation. The prediction is achieved with a finite element analysis which is based on Hill's variational principle for incremental deformations capable of solving gross yielding problems involving arbitrary amounts of deformation. The computed results are in excellent agreement with those obtained in Sih's earlier analysis and with an experimental observation.

The cyclic deformation behavior Of ultrafine-grained (UFG) Ni samples synthesized by the electrodeposition method was studied. Different from those made by severely plastic deformation, the UFG samples used in this study are characterized by large-angle grain boundaries. Behaviors from nanocrystalline Ni and coarse-grained Ni samples were compared with that Of Ultrafine-grained Ni. With in situ neutron diffraction. unusual evolutions of residual lattice strains as well as cyclic hardening and softening behavior were demonstrated during the cyclic deformation. The microstructural changes investigated by TEM are discussed with respect to the unusual lattice strain and cyclic hardening/softening. (C) 2008 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. We presented a series of symmetric double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXD) measurements, (0 0 4), (2 2 0) and (2 - 2 0) diffraction, to investigate the strain relaxation in an InAs film grown on a GaAs(0 0 1) substrate. The strain tensor and rotation tensor were calculated according to the DCXD results. It is found that the misfit strain is relaxed nearly completely and the strain relaxation caused a triclinic deformation in the epilayer. The lattice parameter along the [1 1 0] direction is a little longer than that along the [1 - 1 0] direction. Furthermore, a significant tilt, 0.2 degrees, towards the [1 1 0] direction while a very slight one: 0.002 degrees, towards [1 - 1 0] direction were discussed. This anisotropic strain relaxation is attributed to the asymmetric distribution of misfit dislocations, which is also indicated by the variation of the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of (0 0 4) diffraction along four azimuth angles.
