The multiple melting behavior of several commercial resins of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and random copolymer, poly(propylene-co-ethylene) (PPE), after stepwise isothermal crystallization (SIC) were studied by differential scanning calorimeter and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). For iPP samples, three typical melting endotherms appeared after SIC process when heating rate was lower than 10 degreesC/min. The WAXD experiments proved that only alpha-form crystal was formed during SIC process and no transition from alpha1- to alpha2-form occurred during heating process. Heating rate dependence for each endotherm was discussed and it was concluded that there were only, two major crystals with different thermal stability. For the PPE sample, more melting endotherms appeared after stepwise isothermal crystallization. The introduction of ethylene comonomer in isotactic propylene backbone further decreased the regularity of molecular chain, and the short isotactic propylene sequences could crystallize into gamma-form crystal having a low melting temperature whereas the long sequences crystallized into alpha-form crystal having high melting temperature.

Alignment films prepared from low molar mass photo-crosslinkable materials containing the cinnamate group can be used for aligning LCs after irradiating the films with linearly polarized UV light. The high contrast observed in the polarizing optical microscope between dark and bright images indicates that the alignment is quite uniform. As the photoreaction progresses. the average roughness of the films is increased. All the aggregate structures, 'lamellar crystals'. produced by the photo-crosslinking reaction are of a square shape.

The influence of nanodispersed clay on the alpha crystalline structure of polyamide 6 (PA6) was examined in-situ with X-ray diffraction (XRD) between room temperature and melting. In pure PA6 upon annealing the alpha crystalline phase was substituted by an unstable pseudohexagonal phase at 150degreesC, then it transformed into a new stable crystalline structure - high temperature alpha' phase above the transition temperature. However, in PA6/clay nanocomposite (PA6CN), the alpha phase did not present crystalline phase transition on heating. The increase in the annealing temperature only led to continuous intensity variation. The different behaviors were caused by the confined spaces formed by silicate layers, which constrained the mobility of the polymer chains in-between.

Nylon 10 10 crystals, which isothermally crystallized from the molten state and cold crystallized from melt-quenched samples at various temperatures, were investigated by using temperature-variable wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). No Brill transition occurred for the melt-crystallized crystals. However, this transition was easily observed for the cold-crystallized nylon 10 10, and the transition temperature is pertinent to the crystallization temperature. The sizes of these crystals was determined by SAYS and correlated with the Brill transition temperatures (T-B). It was found that the T-B had a linear relationship with the size of crystals, which was used to predict the T-B for those crystals with thick lamella and to calculate the crystal size showing T-B below room temperature. Nylon 10 10 crystal will possess the gamma form (pseudohexagonal form) rather than the a phase at room temperature if its size becomes small enough.

After isothermal crystallization of the amorphous poly(ether ether ketone), double endothermic behaviour can be found through differential scanning calorimetry experiments. During the heating scan of semicrystalline PEEK, a metastable melt, which comes from the melt of the thinner lamellar crystal populations, can be obtained between these two endotherms. The metastable melt can recrystallize immediately just above the lower melting temperature and form slightly thicker lamellae than the original ones. The thickness and the perfection depend upon the crystallization time and the crystallization temperature. By comparing the TEM morphological observations of the samples before and after partial melting, it can be shown that lamellar crystals, having different thermodynamic stability, form during isothermal crystallization. After partial melting, only the type of lamellar crystal exhibiting the higher thermodynamic stability remains. Wide angle X-ray diffraction measurements shows a slightly change in the crystallinity of the samples before and after the partial melting. Small angle X-ray scattering results exhibit a change in the long period of the lamellar crystals before and after the partial melting process. The crystallization kinetics of the metastable melt can be determined by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic analysis showed that the isothermal crystallization of the metastable PEEK melt proceeds with an Avrami exponent of n = 1.0 similar to 1.4, reflecting that probably one-dimensional or an irregular line growth of the crystal occurred between the existing main lamellae with heterogeneous nucleation. The melting behavior of drawn, compression-molded isotactic polypropylene has been examined in terms of the influence of drawing conditions on the observed properties. Two endothermic peaks were observed on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for samples when high draw ratios and high heating rates were used during DSC tests. The peak at lower temperature is influenced by draw ratio, temperature, and rate, and exhibits a strong superheating effect. The species associated with this peak can partially recrystallize into another species associated with the peak at higher temperature during DSC measurements. The position of the peak at higher temperature depends only on draw ratio. It is proposed that the double-melting peaks at lower and higher temperature result from extremely thin quasi-amorphous or crystalline layers between microfibrils and the lamellar crystals within microfibrils, respectively. We developed an approach, i.e. solvent-assist crystallization (SAC), for growing high quality single crystals of head-to-tail regio-regular poly(3-butylthiophene) (P3BT). By means of atomic force microscopy, electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction, we found that P3BT macromolecules formed lamella single crystals through gradient crystallization, and in the single crystals, molecules packed normal to the lamella with extended-chain conformation with alkyl side chains in the growth front during crystallization.

We demonstrate a strikingly novel morphology of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) crystal obtained upon melt crystallization of spin-coated thin film. This crystal gives windmill-like morphology which contains a number of petals. A detailed inspection on this morphology reveals that each petal is actually composed of terrace-stacked PE lamellae, in which the polymer chains within crystallographic a-c planes adopt similar to 45 degrees tilting around b-axis. The surrounding domains associated with a petal of the windmill composed of twisted lamellar overgrowths with an identical orientation of their long axis, which is the crystallographic b-axis shared by the petal and its corresponding twisted lamellar overgrowths.

The crystallization detail of polyethylene (PE) has been scarcely studied via in-situ approach since it is an extremely fast process. In this work, optical microscopy is used to investigate crystallization details and characteristics of windmill-like polyethylene crystals. It has been shown that the straight edges of the petals appear firstly and grow in pairs from their central junctions, which subsequently induce the surrounding domains in between each pairs of petals to nucleate and crystallize into twisted lamellar overgrowths. The remaining terrace-stacked lamellae which form curved edges of the petals start to develop only after the straight edges of the petals together with the twisted lamellar overgrowths have completed their growth. It is confirmed that the preferential growth direction of these petals are along crystallographic [113] axis, which has an angle of 65, with the typical direction along b-axis adopted also by the twisted lamellar overgrowths.

The effect of crystallization on the lamellar orientation of poly( styrene)-b-poly(L-lactide) (PS-PLLA) semicrystalline diblock copolymer in thin films has been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In the melt state, microphase separation leads to a symmetric wetting structure with PLLA blocks located at both polymer/substrate and polymer/air interfaces. The lamellar period is equal to the long period L in bulk determined by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Symmetric wetting structure formed in the melt state provides a model structure to study the crystallization of PLLA monolayer tethered on glassy (T-c < T-g,T-PS) or rubber (T-c > T-g,T-PS) PS substrate. In both cases, it is found that the crystallization of PLLA results in a "sandwich" structure with amorphous PS layer located at both folding surfaces. For T-c <= T-g,T- PS, the crystallization induces a transition of the lamellar orientation from parallel to perpendicular to substrate in between and front of the crystals. In addition, the depletion of materials around the crystals leads to the formation of holes of 1/2 L, leaving the adsorbed monolayer exposure at the bottom of the holes.

The twisting growth of a branched polyethylene single crystal formed from the melt was observed directly by means of transmission electron and atomic force miscroscopy. The surface stress asymmetry arising from the asymmetry of the surface-fold structure and, chain tilting resulted in the twisting growth of the single crystals. The handedness of the twisting lamellae was consistent With the chain-tilting direction. When multilayer lamellae piled up in a thicker film, the lamellar twist would be inevitably causing screw dislocations.

Metallocene-catalyzed short chain branched polyethylene single crystals, formed from the melt at a higher crystallization temperature of 114 degreesC, were obtained. Highly elongated lamellae were formed, which are different from truncated lozenge or lenticular shaped single crystals formed at a lower crystallization temperature. It was found that there existed a definite line in the lamellae along the longitudinal growth direction and two regions were separated by the definite line. The lateral habits of both the regions were asymmetrical about the b-axis due to the chain tilting, which was the same as that at a lower crystallization temperature. Generally, the highly elongated lamellae were not straight, but curved towards the opposite direction with chain tilting direction due to a series of edge dislocation within a lamella. The inner side of a lamella was serrated and the outer side was smooth due to the lamellar curvature. The thickness of both regions of a lamella was different, the broader region was thicker than the narrower region, which was different from the uniform thickness of the lamellae formed at a lower crystallization temperature. The different thicknesses within a lamella were considered as the result of the initial thickness difference and the impact of isothermal thickening. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. The effects of lamellar thickness on the epitaxial crystallization of polyethylene on the oriented isotatic polypropylene have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. The results obtained from the bright field electron microscopy and electron diffraction show that the epitaxial orientation of the PE crystals on the iPP substrate depends not only on the thickness of the oriented iPP lamellae, but also on the lamellar thickness of PE crystals. No epitaxial orientation relationship between PE crystal and iPP substrate can be found, when the PE crystals are thicker than the lamellar thickness of iPP along the matching direction. This suggests, that the epitaxial nucleation of PE in the PE/iPP epitaxial system is controlled not only by the chain-row matching, but also by a secondary nucleation process.

Both a real time optical interferometric experiment and a numerical simulation of two-dimension non-steady state model were employed to study the growth process of aqueous sodium chlorate crystals. The parameters such as solution concentration distribution, crystal dimensions, growth rate and velocity field were obtained by both experiment and numerical simulation. The influence of earth gravity during crystal growth process was analyzed. A reasonable theory model corresponding to the present experiment is advanced. The thickness of concentration boundary layer was investigated especially. The results from the experiment and numerical simulation match well.
