GaAs single crystal has been grown in recoverable satellite. Hall measurements indicate that the GaAs shows semi-insulating behavior. The structural properties of the crystal have been improved obviously, and their uniformity has been improved as well. The stoichiometry and its distribution in space-grown GaAs are improved greatly compared with the GaAs single crystal grown terrestrially. The properties of integrated circuits made by direct ion-implantation on space-grown GaAs are better than those made on ground-grown materials. These results show that the stoichiometry in semi-insulating GaAs seriously affects the properties of related devices.

A simple photon scanning tunneling microscope (PSTM) is described. Its lateral resolution (similar to 10nm with a maximal scanning range of 10 mu m x 10 mu m ) is much better than that of a conventional optical microscope. Its principle, the fiber optic tip fabrication and PSTM images of different samples such as mica, HDPE and LiNbO3 are presented.

Digitization is the main feature of modern Information Science. Conjoining the digits and the coordinates, the relation between Information Science and high-dimensional space is consanguineous, and the information issues are transformed to the geometry problems in some high-dimensional spaces. From this basic idea, we propose Computational Information Geometry (CIG) to make information analysis and processing. Two kinds of applications of CIG are given, which are blurred image restoration and pattern recognition. Experimental results are satisfying. And in this paper, how to combine with groups of simple operators in some 2D planes to implement the geometrical computations in high-dimensional space is also introduced. Lots of the algorithms have been realized using software.

With a view to solve the problems in modern information science, we put forward a new subject named High-Dimensional Space Geometrical Informatics (HDSGI). It builds a bridge between information science and point distribution analysis in high-dimensional space. A good many experimental results certified the correctness and availability of the theory of HDSGI. The proposed method for image restoration is an instance of its application in signal processing. Using an iterative "further blurring-debluring-further blurring" algorithm, the deblured image could be obtained.

The analytic solutions of coupled-mode equations of four-wave mixings (FWMs) are achieved by means of the undepleted approximation and the perturbation method. The self-stability mechanism of the FWM processes is theoretically proved and is applicable to design a new kind of triple-wavelength erbium-doped fiber lasers. The proposed fiber lasers with excellent stability and uniformity are demonstrated by using a flat-near-zero-dispersion high-nonlinear photonic-crystal-fiber. The significant excellence is analyzed in theory and is proved in experiment. Our fiber lasers can stably lase three waves with the power ripple of less than 0.4 dB. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Surface initiated polymerization (SIP) has become an attractive method for tailoring physical and chemical properties of surfaces for a broad range of applications. Most of those application relied on the merit of a high density coating. In this study we explored a long overlooked field of SIP. SIP from substrates of low initiator density. We combined ellipsometry with AFM to investigate the effect of initiatior density and polymerization time on the morphology of polymer coatings. In addition, we carefully adjusted the nanoscale separation of polymer chains to achieve a balance between nonfouling and immobilization capacities. We further tested the performance of those coating on various biosensors, such as quartz crystal microbalance, surface plasmon resonance, and protein microarrays. The optimized matrices enhanced the performance of those biosensors. This report shall encourage researches to explore new frontiers in SIP that go beyond polymer brushes.

A novel cemented carbides (W0.8Al0.2)C-0.7-Co with different cobalt contents were prepared by mechanical alloying and hot-pressing technique. Hot-pressing technique as a common technique was performed to fabricate the bulk bodies of the hard alloys. The novel cemented carbides have superior mechanical properties compared with WC-Co. The density, operate cost of the novel material were much lower than WC-Co system. The novel materials were easy to process nanoscale sintering and get the rounded particles in the bulk materials.

[Ru(bpy)2dppz]2+ electrochemiluminescence (ECL) was studied, and it was used to investigate DNA interaction and develop a label-free ATP aptasensor for the first time. ECL of [Ru(bpy)2dppz]2+ is negligible in aqueous solution, and increases approximately 1000 times when [Ru(bpy)2dppz]2+ intercalates into the nucleic acid structure. The ECL switch behavior of [Ru(bpy)2dppz]2+ is ascribed to the intercalation that shields the phenazine nitrogens from the solvent and results in a luminescent excited state. The ECL switch by DNA was applied to investigate the interaction of [Ru(bpy)2dppz]2+ with herring sperm DNA. The calculated equilibrium constant (K) is 1.35 x 10(6) M(-1), and the calculated binding-site size (s) is 0.88 base pair, which is consistent with the reported values.

Here, a fluorescent switch is constructed combining hemin, hemin aptamer, and a newly synthesized anionic conjugated polymer (ACP), poly(9,9-bis(6'-phosphate-hexyl) fluorenealt-1,4-phenylene) sodium salt (PFHPNa/PFP). In the "off-state", the fluorescence of PFP is sensitively quenched by hemin, with a high K-sv value of similar to 10(7). While in the "on-state", the formation of the aptamer/hemin complex recovers the fluorescence intensity. The fluorescent switch is sensitive and selective to hemin. To testify the universality and practicality of the fluorescent switch, a series of label-free DNA-related sensing platforms are developed, containing three DNA sensing strategies and one ATP recognition strategy. The fluorescent switch developed is simple, sensitive, and universal, which extends applications of the anionic conjugated polymers.
